Here are five great five-year-old buys for £15k.
That age is a sweet spot because most new cars are bought on lease or other finance schemes, and used as company cars.
That means they spend their first three or even four years being maintained with money no object.
At the end of that lease, all faults are put right at the expense of the driver.
Give them a wash 'n' wax, maybe new tyres, and they're almost factory fresh.
After that it's only another short period in someone else's hands.
Once that owner moves on, you can scoop up a bargain.
Another thing.
The industry has recently got distracted by big dash screens, electrification and pointless connectivity.
So the fundamentals – safety, comfort, driver appeal – are no better in today's new cars than in these used ones.

Here are our picks, each for £15k.
We've given ourselves a window of 2019-2020, because few new cars were sold during mid-2020's Covid period.
But lockdown means the 2019 ones stood still and didn't wear out
They'll all have done about 40k miles, except the pick-up.

Senate Moves to End Fuel Economy Fines That Hit Automakers Hardest

Several automakers were projected to face billions of dollars in penalties by 2032 from a fuel economy fine that Congress may repeal. Legacy automakers could save billions with Congress's recent proposal Senate Republicans have proposed ending fines for automakers not meeting Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) rules as part of President Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill.' CAFE fuel economy standards have been active since 1975, with the initial penalty at a $5 fine per 0.1 mpg below the standard, multiplied by the number of vehicles sold in the US market. In 1997, this fine increased to $5.50, and today, the penalty is $14 per 0.1 mpg below the standard, with some automakers significantly more affected than others. 0:08 / 0:09 Walmart is selling a 'heavy duty' $89 step ladder for $48, and shoppers say it's 'sturdy and secure' Watch More Stellantis has paid the highest amount of recent fines, including $156.6 million for the 2016 and 2017 model years, a record $235.5 million for the 2018 to 2019 period, and $190.7 million for the 2019 and 2020 periods. General Motors (GM) paid $128.2 million in penalties for 2016 and 2017. In 2001, BMW paid a $27 million CAFE fine. If Congress doesn't change CAFE rules, GM, Ford, and Stellantis are projected to pay over $10 billion in penalties from 2027 to 2032 under stricter regulations set by the Biden administration, according to Transport Topics. Stellantis sign at the company's North American office in Auburn Hills, Michigan. — Source: Stellantis Politicians have their eyes on emissions requirements, too Senate Republicans also proposed lowering emissions requirements, ending the $7,500 electric vehicle (EV) tax credit, imposing a $250 annual EV registration fee, and phasing out EV battery production tax credits in 2028. Tesla earned almost $2.8 billion last year by selling regulatory credits to other automakers, helping competitors meet government-established car emissions rules, many of which are in California. Competitors who don't manufacture enough zero-emission vehicles face steep fines if they don't purchase regulatory credits from Tesla. If rolled back, new emissions requirements would save automakers $200 million, Reuters reports. The Transportation Department also declared that former President Biden's administration exceeded its authority by assuming a high EV adoption rate in calculating fuel economy rates, increasing the likelihood of looser CAFE standards. Under President Biden, 2027 to 2031 model-year passenger cars faced a 2% annual fuel economy increase requirement, with trucks subject to a 4% increase. However, new final rules would keep the 2027 to 2031 passenger car fuel economy at 2% while lowering the annual increase for trucks from 4% to 2% for 2029 to 2031 models. However, separate legislation may eliminate CAFE fines altogether. Autoblog Newsletter Autoblog brings you car news; expert reviews and exciting pictures and video. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) headquarters in Washington, DC — Source: Getty Automakers could still face tailpipe emissions rules established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), even if Congress eliminates CAFE fines. While Congress can overturn EPA rules, its most recent CAFE proposal doesn't impact EPA penalties. As of 2025, automakers are subject to EPA penalties up to $45,268 per non-compliant vehicle or engine, $4,527 per tampering event or sale of defeat device, and $45,268 per day for reporting and record-keeping violations. Final thoughts If passed, Congress's proposal could significantly shape the U.S. EV adoption rate in favor of lowering immediate costs for legacy automakers. 'We are making vehicles more affordable and easier to manufacture in the United States. The previous administration illegally used CAFE standards as an electric vehicle mandate, raising new car prices and reducing safety. Resetting CAFE standards as Congress intended will lower vehicle costs and ensure the American people can purchase the cars they want,' said current Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy regarding Congress's proposal to end CAFE fines. Porsche unveils road-legal hypercar 50 years after original won world titles – but there's a catch

The new motor features significant changes from the original race-winner CARN'T BELIEVE IT Porsche unveils road-legal hypercar 50 years after original won world titles – but there's a catch Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) PORSCHE has shocked the motoring world by unveiling a new road legal hypercar. What's more is that it's spun off the a motor that's won multiple endurance racing world titles - but there's a catch. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Porsche has revealed a new road legal hypercar Credit: PA 2 It's based on a trailblazing motor that won multiple endurance racing titles Credit: PA The Porsche 963 RSP is unlike anything you can currently purchase - because only one has been made. It's a version of the manufacturers WEC and ISMA championship winning machine. And it's been built to mark 50 years since Count Rossi drove the trailblazing Porsche 917 from Zuffenhausen to Paris. Like that all-conquering motor, this one's been made road legal. Porsche's North American boss Timo Resch said: "How could we reimagine the 917's story in today's time? "The 917 from the story was every inch a race car – albeit one driven on the road – and we took the same approach with the 963 RSP. "It uses beautiful materials of the best quality available, but is still every bit a race car underneath." The 963 features significant changes over the car on which its based. In terms of the engine, the carmaker had to allow the 4.5-litre, twin-turbo V8 hybrid to run on regular unleaded rather than race fuel. While not an easy undertaking, the 918 Spyder-derived V8, e-motor and battery combo delivers a whopping 671bhp. Inside Taycan Turbo GT Porsche that can hit 200mph as SunSport's Isabelle Barker is taken for a spin by Formula E safety car driver The road height was also adjusted to make it suitable for general roads and the dampers softened. The control unit was reprogrammed too to allow for the headlights and taillights to operate closer to those of a motor on the road. But its the interior that departs most from the original race car. In the entirely bespoke cabin, you'll find soft tan leather with a single piece driver's seat clad with additional cushioning and a fixed headrest. You'll find a special panel next to the driver that stores the steering wheel as well as a helmet and car aficionados will spot the nods to the 917. The biggest tribute comes in the form of the exterior colour that's the same 'Martini Silver' as Count Rossi's 917. This one's been painted too, a unique challenge because of the carbon fibre and Kevlar bodywork. The bodywork also had to be modified to cover the wheel arches, headlights and tail lights added as well as closed-off banking plates on the rear wing and mounting points for the license plates. An enamel Porsche badge can be found on the nose and proper wet road tyres wrapped around 18 inch racing wheels. ONE-OF-A-KIND 'SPECIAL' MOTOR The 963 RSP gets its name from the involvement of American auto racing team owner Roger Searle Penske on the project. Resch explained he called on Penske for "support" in the car's construction, with the racing expert ensuring the classic race car's character was not changed for the new model. The Porsche boss said that as Penske's involvement increased, the company realised he would be the perfect, and only, customer for the car. So while it was never intended to be a fully road-legal 963, Porsche received an exemption from the EPA in the US as it understood "how special" the car is. Despite this, it is not a fully road-registered car - and it needed special dispensation to run in France at the Le Mans 24hr weekend. For now, the car is expected to remain one-of-a-kind, with a Porsche spokesperson telling Top Gear that wide-scale selling would "change the character" of the iconic motor.
