It's the all-electric Lotus hypercar. But you probably knew that already because we've had six whole years to get our heads round the idea. Most cars would have been facelifted in the time it's taken Lotus to get this thing to market – or even been replaced altogether. Still, better late than never.
The Evija first broke cover back in July 2019, so it takes its place alongside those other 21st century moon-shot cars, the Aston Martin Valkyrie and Mercedes-AMG One, in terms of developmental challenge and creative hubris. Talk to any of the people involved with this trio and they'll rub their eyes wearily, exhale deeply, and admit that yes, it was all a bit much.

Why the delay?
Covid, mainly, but also the sheer challenge of getting this heavily software-defined machine to function. The Evija has actually been in production for a while now, built to exacting standards in the same building in which the fabled early Nineties Lotus Carlton came to life. That had 377bhp and was sufficiently lairy for its very existence to be debated in the House of Commons.
With a power output of 2,011bhp – or 1.5 megawatts if you prefer – the Evija can claim to be the most powerful production car in history. And it can nail 186mph in 9.2 seconds. Here it is, in all its glory. And yet the universe merely shrugs. Clearly people are harder to please these days. Remind us of the tech…
The 93kWh battery pack is supplied by Coventry firm, Hyperbat; the cells from American supplier Molicell. The pack sits in the middle of the car rather than underneath, and a high power density was obviously the main requirement. Packaging it was such a challenge that the principal power electronic modules are integrated into the pack, with the main energy storage components of the battery in the lower section. The cells are liquid cooled and housed within a carbon fibre case.
A slab or skateboard battery would have been easier to configure but wouldn't have delivered the sort of dynamics Lotus was targeting. Hence the 'mid-engined' configuration. The company had to reset its usual parameters in terms of dynamic clearances in order to make the Evija work; they're down to just five millimetres in certain areas. The front and rear electronic drive units – which bundle two 500bhp motors together – are separately cooled.

Presumably Lotus has kept a keen eye on quality and durability.
It insists yes. The assembly facility is homely but rigorous. The battery pack can withstand extremely robust duty cycles: during testing, it was dropped, crushed, set fire to, and frozen. It can be run at full velocity for up to eight minutes without de-rating – which is usually done to protect the cells and extend the battery's lifespan – as Lotus discovered when it took the Evija X to the Nürburgring. It set a lap time around the Nordschleife of 6m 24s, the third fastest ever – only the VW ID.R and Porsche 919 Evo have gone quicker… Strewth. And it still looks great, no question.
Designed by a team led by the indefatigable Russell Carr, a meteor crash-landing into Earth would have roughly the same impact. The tunnels either side of the battery pack are magnificent achievements, expanses of space that help the Evija's aero efficiency but also secure its status as perhaps the most singular looking road car currently available.
It's equally exotically engineered. It's made entirely of carbon fibre; chassis, body panels and all, including the front sub-frames. This is all in aid of maximum structural rigidity. The Evija's carbon tub is supplied by Italian company CPC, and it's one of the biggest single-piece composite chassis that's ever been attempted. Manufacturing it takes two days, after which the body is loaded up and transported to Hethel.
The cockpit sits well within the body, a layout that evokes early Seventies endurance racers, a generation that holds every car designer spellbound. Around 85 per cent of the components are from UK suppliers, hence the jingoistic Union Jack motifs sprinkled around the body. Any other highlights?
There's a complex race-bred in-board suspension, co-developed by Multimatic (which also supplies Ferrari and Mercedes-AMG). That includes an F1-style 'heave' damper to absorb the effect of the Evija's considerable downforce – an unbelievable 1,680kg at the car's 217mph Vmax – while its overall aerodynamic properties are dictated by the air flowing not just over and under it, but also through it.
The battery pack alone weighs 753kg – more than the weight of an original Lotus Elise – the Evija tipping the scales overall at 1,894kg.
Lotus insists that the Evija has an analogue feel and says its chassis dynamics are passive in the classic Lotus idiom. It doesn't have active suspension or rear steer, and the aim is for the driver to get exactly what they expect, when they expect it. Rivals?
Most obviously, the Rimac Nevera and Pininfarina Battista. Ferrari's BEV – rumoured to be more of a Purosangue Speciale visually than a swooping hypercar – is due to be revealed towards the end of this year.
Lotus remains coy about how many Evijas have found homes, but at £2.4m a car like this is unquestionably a tough sell – as Mate Rimac himself has admitted. Lotus thinks that some will take their place in car collections, and the Evija certainly has its sculptural qualities. But you could buy a fair few works by Henry Moore for this sort of outlay.

There's real magic here, no question. And yet, the world, we know, is refusing to fall in love with the vastly horsepowered, hyper-EV. A multi-million pound curio, the Evija is unlikely to deliver the paradigm shift Lotus needs it to.
It's mesmerising to look at, fast as hell, and handles spectacularly. We can only salute the team behind it who have done a great job nursing it into production. But the motors are noisy, the range barely adequate, and the software issues we experienced during our extensive time with the car are reminders of fragile Lotuses past. Could it be that the Evija is answering a question no-one was really asking?

June 15 (Reuters) - Defending champions Ferrari were heading for a third straight win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, after leading the 93rd edition of the race through the night and into Sunday morning at the Sarthe circuit. With six hours remaining, the number 51 factory 499P car of 2023 winners Alessandro Pier Guidi, Antonio Giovinazzi and James Calado led the number 83 AF Corse entry of Robert Kubica, Yifei Yi and Philip Hanson by some six seconds. The number 50 factory car crewed by last year's winners Antonio Fuoco, Nicklas Nielsen and Miguel Molina completed the lockout of the podium places. Porsche Penske's number six hypercar, which had led at the halfway stage after a safety car period, was fourth and Toyota's number eight car fifth. With six hours being the regular length of a World Endurance Championship race, and temperatures rising, there was however still plenty of room for late drama. The number 51 Ferrari had already fought back from eighth place after a puncture, a five second penalty and 20 second stop and go punishment to retake the lead by dawn. Swiss tennis great Roger Federer had waved the French flag to get the race underway on Saturday afternoon, with Porsche immediately seizing the lead from pole-sitters Cadillac. Cadillac had swept the front row in Thursday's qualifying but any advantage was short-lived as Porsche Penske's Julien Andlauer slipstreamed into the lead from third on the grid before the first chicane on the opening lap. "We're trying to hang in there, but it's tough out on track to be honest," said Sebastien Bourdais, who shares the number 38 Cadillac with 2009 Formula One champion Jenson Button and was in ninth place. "We're struggling with tyre degradation. And we're struggling with the balance." Ferrari worked their way to the front and Fuoco took the lead in the third hour on the run from Mulsanne to Indianapolis with the three Ferraris running 1-2-3 at the quarter distance. The BMW driven by Italy's MotoGP great Valentino Rossi had to retire in the LMGT3 category. The race at the circuit in north-west France features 62 cars shared by 186 drivers from 34 countries, and is the fourth round of the World Endurance Championship, with 21 hypercars in the battle for overall victory. Organisers have put the total weekend attendance at more than 300,000 spectators. Ferrari will be able to keep the trophy at their Maranello factory if the works team completes a hat-trick on Sunday.

Bentley Blower Junior review: ‘Too much money to be taken seriously'

My schoolfriend had a go-kart with a Villiers lawnmower engine and a two-speed axle. How jealous were the rest of us? I wish he could see me now, driving this miniaturised version of Bentley's most revered Le Mans racing car of the Twenties, when the imperious British firm dominated, taking four consecutive victories in the famed 24-hour event from 1927. To be precise, this Bentley Blower Junior is an 85 per cent scale replica of the famous ex-Tim Birkin 4 1/2-litre 'Blower' (named after its supercharged engine), one of the most famous racing cars ever. It famously helped Bentley overcome the Mercedes threat at the 1930 Le Mans 24 Hours, acting as the hare; eventually the high speeds took their toll on the German cars. Birkin's car also expired, but its exploits allowed one of the works Bentley Speed Six models to win. Bentley owns that Birkin car, registered UU5872. It is in the most original form, all 240bhp and 125mph of it – with an insurance value of £25 million. The Blower Junior, built by what was formerly the Light Car Company (now Hedley Studios) of Bicester, can only muster 20bhp, a top speed of just over 50mph and has a price of £155,400 if you include VAT. It's an EV, of course, with a 10.8kWh lithium-ion battery located between the longitudinal parts of the steel ladder-frame chassis. The motor produces 15kW continuous, more like 22kW at peak and the WLTP range is 65 miles, with 60 miles more realistic. It will charge fully in between three and five hours using a 7.4kW household wallbox, but there's no faster charging as the battery is air-cooled and therefore can't manage its internal temperatures as well as a liquid-cooled item. Made road-legal (homologated) under the UK's quadricycle rules (L7e/LSV), the kerb weight without the battery is 450kg, with the battery it's 550kg so no prizes for guessing how much the power source adds. Skip to: On the road The Telegraph verdict The facts at a glance Walk around It really is the most wonderful evocation, rather than a replica. If you don't look too closely, there are times when you could genuinely be looking at a brand-new Blower from the Twenties. It's sensitive to light, colour and the angle from which you observe, although it's actually quite large (3.72 metres long, 1.48m wide and 1.27m high). The ungainly stalks sitting out of the bodywork, incidentally, are the anchor posts for the mandatory seatbelts. The body is a combination of hand-beaten aluminium carbon-fibre for the body tub, which is covered with a cellulose-textured fabric recreated for vintage restorations so it resembles the original. The finned aluminium casting at the front, incidentally, is not an Amherst Villiers supercharger as per the original but the charging port, while the imitation saddle fuel tank at the back is a sizable luggage compartment. The hand-crafting and attention to detail is extraordinary, from the handbrake lever and single-door entry to the driving position and the tiny electronic display, which has an analogue clock and driving data in a correct period fount. This is a two-seater in tandem form with a central driving position. The seats are wonderfully upholstered if a bit overstuffed, although the passenger sits right at the rear of the body, with a profound sense of vulnerability. Ben Hedley, CEO of the eponymous creator, says he was the only one in the company brave (or stupid) enough to sit in the back seat during the handling sign-off process. There are 99 Blower lookalikes to be built (even down to the stickers), followed by a further 250 non-Le Mans replica cars, then it's over. On the road Climb in from the left side using the diminutive foot pad and you are confronted with an machined metal facia and a four-spoked steering wheel in the correct Bluemels style. Haphazard might best describe the instrument and control layout (as it was originally) but at least the maker has sourced suitably vintage-looking dials, instruments and old-fashioned switches. It's not a facsimile of an original Blower and that's OK, but they have managed to contrive an order of instrumentation which is almost entirely obscured if you are driving with both hands on the wheel. In addition, the speedometer stopped working soon into the drive. In addition, three out of four test cars simply stopped during the road test, while mine also restricted itself to 20mph. Repeatedly turning on and off solved some of these issues, but it was inauspicious to say the least. The driving position (partly as a result of the sight lines required to gain type approval) is high, far too high in fact. People were smaller in the late 1920s when the full-sized cars were made, modern frames are taller and on a plump leather seat you are stuck out in the full blast of the wind with little protection from the aero screen, which is on the legal limit of size before a wiper and washer would need to be added to conform to regulations. Frankly you look like a circus act; the first thing an owner would do is engage the services of a good upholsterer to sit lower in the body. I felt a bit ridiculous driving it, although the Jersey islanders smiled and waved indulgently as I passed. As with any EV, with only two pedals it is stupidly easy to drive, especially compared with a proper Blower with its notoriously recalcitrant crash gearbox; it's just press and go, although the electronic whirring, which is also required by law, is not very edifying. Nor is it very fast, but it's brisk from a standstill even if it runs out of puff at 45mph, yet it will creep to about 50mph if you keep the pedal to the floor, although by that time the wind blast is on the verge of removing your scalp. Despite suspension aping the original 1930s design, with half-elliptic leaf springs and lever-arm friction dampers, it rides pretty well. Something to do with the narrow tyres, possibly. It also handles predictably, even if the steering box system is a trifle vague. The traction isn't too bad, although a brisk getaway on a damp upward slope will have the inside wheel spinning madly, but on Jersey's 346 miles of road this isn't really an issue. The brakes (modern Brembo discs hidden in the wheels) are sensational, which adds a sense of confidence to the drive. The Telegraph verdict Hedley reckons that what he and Bentley were after 'was the ultimate pub car' (what the rest of us might call an indulgent toy for local jaunts) and after producing tiny Aston Martins, Ferraris and Bugattis, this bonsai Bentley is Hedley Studios's best car yet. And so it should be, given the price. The initial 99 First Edition cars, which are now being delivered, cost about £108,000 including taxes. Something of a bargain considering the rest of the 349-strong production run will cost £129,500, which with VAT is £155,400. Alternatives to the ultimate pub car might include a tweaked MG TC for about £20,000 or a Morgan Three Wheeler for half as much again. In fact there's any number of rare and interesting machines that could do the same job for considerably less (although perhaps not as cleanly and quietly). There's much to admire in the way this car has been built and the use of authentic materials and design, but it is really too much money to be taken at all seriously.
