55 men arrested in France in major operation to bust online pedophile ring
Fifty-five men from across France were arrested between Monday and Thursday morning as part of a large-scale operation to dismantle a pedophile network operating through the messaging service Telegram, according to France's Office for the Protection of Minors.
The suspects, aged between 25 and 75, are accused of exchanging messages on Telegram with an 'extremely dangerous' child sex offender who was incarcerated in the summer of 2024, and whose own children were rescued after being abused, Quentin Bevan, head of the OFMIN's operational unit told CNN on Thursday.
'These 55 individuals all exchanged CSAM imagery (Child Sexual Abuse Material) with the dangerous pedophile, so we had digital evidence implicating all of them,' said Bevan.
Bevan said that the arrests are 'the fruit of a ten-month long investigation.'
'It was a major investigation and infiltration operation on this Telegram group,' Bevan said. 'We had to follow the exchanges, analyze them, and identify the individuals hiding behind these Telegram pseudonyms — especially those who had children, had criminal records, or worked in sensitive professions involving contact with children.'
Bevan said the men are from all ages and backgrounds: fathers, civil servants, military personnel, and paramedics.In France, the possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material is punishable by a five-year prison sentence and a €100,000 ($112,747) fine.
CNN has reached out to Telegram for comment on the arrests. This is not the first high-profile case involving the platform in France. In August 2024, Telegram founder Pavel Durov was detained at Paris's Bourget Airport on a warrant related to Telegram's moderation policies.
French authorities indicted Durov on August 28, 2024 on several charges, including money laundering and spreading child sex abuse material. Durov said in a statement soon afterwards that he was committed to improving his app's moderation and that authorities were trying to hold him 'personally responsible for other people's illegal use of Telegram.'

Authorities announced Thursday they are investigating another social media post, the second in a week, showing a man who identifies himself as Antoine Massey, a fugitive still on the lam after escaping three weeks ago from a New Orleans jail. The latest Instagram post, which appears to have been published Wednesday, shows a man standing in front of a blue car who says he is "#AntoineMassey" and has the same distinctive facial tattoos. Massey faces kidnapping and rape charges. Authorities are not sure when or where the photo reportedly showing Massey was taken. But they "are treating the post as if it's real," a senior law enforcement official said. The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to publicly discuss the ongoing investigation into the May 16 escape by 10 inmates. The group yanked up a faulty cell door, crawled through a hole in a wall behind a toilet where steel bars had been cut and then scaled a barbed wire fence using blankets for protection. It was one of the largest jailbreaks in recent U.S. history. Since then, multiple friends and family members have been arrested, accused of helping the inmates escape. A maintenance worker at the jail was also arrested, though he told investigators he was threatened by one of the inmates who took part in the jailbreak, according to court documents. State and local officials have heaped criticism on the management of Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson, who has largely blamed the jailbreak on poor infrastructure and the inability to make needed improvements at the 10-year-old $150 million facility. Eight of the escaped men have been apprehended, while Massey and another fugitive, convicted murderer Derrick Groves, remain on the run. Groves is the grandson of Kim Groves, whose 1994 murder by a New Orleans police officer drew national attention, CBS affiliate WWL-TV reported. In the Instagram post, the person claiming to be Massey states he is "innocent." Massey, 32, faces charges of kidnapping, rape, domestic battery involving strangulation and motor vehicle theft. He added it was "unknown at this time" if Massey posted the photo or when it was taken. Residents urged to lock doors amid manhunt for dad accused of murdering his 3 girls in Washington state
People who live or own cabins in remote areas of several Washington state counties have been urged to lock their doors — including locking up sheds — while a search for a dad accused of murdering his three daughters continues in the area. The Chelan County Sheriff's Office wants residents in Chelan, Kittitas, King, Snohomish and Okanagan counties to be aware that Travis Decker, 32, remains missing. They also asked people in remote areas to leave their blinds open and keep outside lights turned on while authorities conduct their searches. "Please know that law enforcement professionals are patrolling at all hours, in all spaces throughout this region," the sheriff's office said. Police said earlier that Decker is well-versed in wilderness survival and is able to spend days at a time off the grid with little equipment. Decker, a former Army soldier, is accused of killing his three girls, ages 9, 8 and 5. Their bodies were found near a campground in central Washington on Monday, three days after the girls' mother reported to Wenatchee police that Decker had not returned the girls on time following a planned visit. Decker's unoccupied pickup truck was also found. The girl's mother told police she had tried to call Decker multiple times and said the calls went straight to voicemail. Authorities have executed search warrants around the area, as well as on Decker's electronic devices, the sheriff's office said Thursday. Investigators did not say what they found, but noted that "new information" has provided more leads to follow up on. Recent Ring camera footage and photos of Decker have also been released. The search has led to the closure of the Enchantments — a region in the Cascade Mountain Range with hiking and stunning landscapes. The region and surrounding areas are closed until at least June 18 or further notice, the sheriff's office said. Decker is described as 5 feet, 8 inches, tall and 190 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a light-colored shirt and dark shorts, according to authorities. 2 found dead inside Colorado home after deputies shoot suspect with knife
Two people were found dead inside a home in the Denver metro area early Friday morning. The deceased were discovered when Adams County Sheriff's deputies were called to a home for a well-being check. When deputies arrived at the home located at Lofton Court and Kokai Circle just after 5 a.m., they encountered a male with a knife. Deputies said they used multiple resources in an attempt to disarm the male but were ineffective. The deputies said they shot the male and he was rushed to the hospital where he died. After the shooting, deputies conducted a "safety sweep" of the home where the initial 911 call originated and found two deceased adult victims inside the home. Investigators are conducting interviews and searching the home for evidence to determine what events transpired leading up to the deputies' arrival.
