Maharashtra To Mandate GPS-Enabled Digital Locks For Liquor Transport From July

The new system will equip liquor tankers with GPS-enabled digital locks, allowing real-time tracking of their movements
In a significant move to enhance the security and transparency of liquor transportation, the Maharashtra government has announced the implementation of GPS-enabled digital locks on vehicles transporting liquor and spirits. This initiative, set to commence on 1 July 2025, aims to curb theft, prevent illegal diversions, and modernise the state's liquor supply chain.
Historically, the monitoring of liquor transport in Maharashtra relied heavily on manual methods, including physical escorts for vehicles carrying spirits, particularly during interstate movements. Despite being a sensitive commodity, there was no digital surveillance system in place. Recognising the need for modernisation—and inspired by similar initiatives in states such as Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal—Maharashtra has decided to adopt this technology-driven approach.
The new system will equip liquor tankers with GPS-enabled digital locks, allowing real-time tracking of their movements. This will enable the State Excise Department to monitor the vehicles' routes, detect unauthorised deviations, identify prolonged halts, and receive alerts in case of tampering. Geofencing technology will also be employed to notify authorities when a tanker enters or exits designated zones.
Initially, the project will be rolled out as a pilot with selected license holders. It will cover tankers transporting pure spirit within the state and for export purposes, as well as vehicles ferrying beer from licensed facilities such as Proprietary Label Licence (PLL) and Bottling & Rectification Licence (BRL) units to ports for international shipping. Excise officers will have access to live data via mobile devices and desktop applications, ensuring constant oversight.
Officials from the Excise Department believe that the digital lock system will revolutionise liquor transportation by improving safety, reducing theft, and enhancing compliance. The model is akin to safety mechanisms used in the petroleum industry, where tamper-proof systems and real-time tracking are already standard.
A formal government resolution has been issued mandating the rollout of this system by July 2025. Published on the official Maharashtra government portal, the resolution marks a decisive step towards adopting smart technology for regulatory purposes.
With this initiative, Maharashtra positions itself as a forward-looking state in the regulated liquor trade, aiming to ensure accountability, efficiency, and security across its transport network.

China's Xi Jinping Holds Phone Call With Trump, First Since 'Liberation Day' Tariffs Move

Last Updated: The call comes after Donald Trump described Xi Jinping as 'very tough' and 'extremely hard to make a deal with'. Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump- their first since implementation of new tariffs by the White House under its so-called 'Liberation Day" tariffs. The call comes after Donald Trump described Xi Jinping as 'very tough" and 'extremely hard to make a deal with" after accusing Beijing of backtracking on a trade agreement aimed at easing tariffs and restrictions between the world's two largest economies. 'I like President Xi of China, always have, and always will, but he is VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH," Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social media platform. The two world leaders were last known to have spoken to each other in January, before Donald Trump's second inauguration as president. US- China Trade War As friction between Washington and Beijing rises over the collapse of what was touted as a tentative tariff truce, Donald Trump accused China of failing to uphold its commitments to reduce trade barriers, sparking fears of another round of economic retaliation. Pakistan's New Spying & Infiltration Strategy Set To Take Off On The Back Of Drones: Intel Report

Last Updated: Drones will be used for advanced surveillance and situational assessment along the LoC before any infiltration attempts, News18 has learnt Pakistan's spy agency ISI plans to enhance infiltration attempts along the Line of Control (LoC) by utilising drone technology, an Indian intelligence report has revealed. Specifically, drones will be used for advanced surveillance and situational assessment before any infiltration attempts, CNN-News18 has learnt. This includes tracking the movement and deployment of Indian security forces, identifying gaps or weaknesses in border patrol routes, and analysing terrain conditions in real-time to aid terrorist movements, the report says. The strategic use of drones aims to minimise the risk of detection by employing technology-enabled methods for cross-border penetration. On May 14, a credible input revealed that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) held a meeting with various Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) training camp commanders and guides in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The discussion focused on increasing the recruitment of new terrorists into the LeT and emphasising the importance of drone surveillance along the LoC to monitor the situation prior to infiltration attempts. Further discussions included plans to relocate training camps and launching pads in PoK, as well as constructing underground bunkers in preparation for potential armed conflict with India, says the report. According to the intelligence inputs, a detailed plan was also discussed to attack Indian security forces in the coming days while upgrading and activating the old overground worker (OGW) network in Kashmir.

Eid Ban, Rs 5 Lakh Fine: Why Are Ahmadiyya Muslims Barred From Worship In Pakistan?

Last Updated: As Pakistan prepares for Eid-ul-Adha, the Ahmadiyya Muslim community faces a crackdown in Punjab and Sindh, with threats of fines and imprisonment for celebrating the festival As Pakistan prepares to celebrate Eid-ul-Adha on Saturday, June 7, with public gatherings, prayers, and festivities, a troubling crackdown is unfolding quietly across parts of Punjab and Sindh provinces. The Ahmadiyya Muslim community, numbering nearly 20 lakh in the country, is being systematically barred from observing the religious holiday under threats of fines, police harassment, and imprisonment. Despite being followers of Islam, Ahmadiyyas are prohibited by law from identifying as Muslims or practicing Islamic rituals in Pakistan. In the lead-up to this year's Eid, authorities have reportedly intensified pressure on the community, forcing members to sign affidavits swearing they will not celebrate the festival. In a disturbing development, local officials have warned that any Ahmadiyya individual found offering Eid prayers or performing traditional sacrifices could face a hefty penalty – a fine of up to Rs 5 lakh (approx. USD 1,800). In some areas, even private observance of religious rituals inside one's home has been outlawed. According to local media, several Ahmadis in Punjab and Sindh have already been detained for allegedly attempting to mark Eid in defiance of this de facto ban. Human rights watchdog Amnesty International, in its June 2024 report, stated that at least 36 members of the Ahmadiyya community were arbitrarily arrested in the province of Punjab to pre-empt any form of Eid celebration. Under current Pakistani law, any Ahmadi who 'poses" as a Muslim, by calling their place of worship a mosque, reciting Islamic prayers, or using traditional Islamic greetings, risks up to three years in prison. Human rights groups have repeatedly condemned these laws as deeply discriminatory and in violation of international norms on freedom of religion. Who Are The Ahmadiyyas? The Ahmadiyya Muslim community was founded in 1889 in Qadian, a town in British India's Punjab province, by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, who declared himself the promised messiah and a reformer of Islam. Advocating peace, tolerance, and non-violence, the Ahmadiyya movement positioned itself as a counter to religious extremism. But this very stance made it a target for hardline clerics and political forces in Pakistan. Today, despite their peaceful teachings and contributions to society, the Ahmadiyyas remain among the most persecuted religious minorities in Pakistan. Their mosques have been attacked, graves desecrated, and community members subjected to mob violence, hate speech, and institutional discrimination.
