Shortlisted designs for Queen Elizabeth II's official London memorial unveiled

Yahoo09-05-2025

A pair of gently curved bridges, a bronze oak tree and a lily pad-inspired walkway are among the standout features of five shortlisted designs for Queen Elizabeth II's official memorial site in central London.
The national memorial will be built in St. James's Park, near Buckingham Palace in the heart of the British capital.
The finalists, unveiled Wednesday, include some of the UK's most prominent architecture firms, including Foster + Partners, which designed London's City Hall and 30 St. Mary Axe (known as The Gherkin), and Heatherwick Studios, the firm behind New York City's Vessel structure.
A panel from The Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee, which was jointly established by the British government and Royal Household, will announce a winning proposal this summer, according to a press release. The memorial is expected to be unveiled in 2026, marking what would have been the late Queen's centenary.
The design brief asked for 'an emotionally powerful place' that celebrates Elizabeth II's 'extraordinary life of service,' while providing the public with a space for reflection.
'She was part of our national identity and helped to define our values, she gave us a sense of continuity through times of great change, she was integral to recognizing achievement and she exemplified service and duty, strengthened by faith and leavened by pragmatism, optimism and humor,' said committee chair Lord Janvrin, the late Queen's former private secretary, in the press release.
'The masterplan design needs to seek inspiration from all this,' he added. 'The memorial must be — simply — a beautiful place, a place to visit with friends, a place to gather, to enjoy, and to reflect on an extraordinary life.'
The public can view the finalists' designs as part of an online exhibition and can provide feedback until May 19.
To honor Britain's longest-reigning monarch, Heatherwick Studio proposed an entry with a lily-themed bridge at its heart (pictured top). In a video introducing the design, the firm's founder Thomas Heatherwick said Elizabeth II's values of 'togetherness and unity' led his team to conceptualize a 'Bridge of Togetherness' that would serve as a gathering place in the park.
The design features a sculpture of the late monarch protected by a canopy of 'sculptural lilies' at the center of a limestone bridge. The proposal also includes a pathway of 70 limestone 'lily pads' signifying the Queen's 70-year reign, as well as plants that held significance for her.
'Like her legacy, it is quietly monumental,' reads the firm's entry. 'A memorial grown from the landscape, open to people throughout the world from every walk of life.'
Another design looking to themes of harmony was proposed by Foster + Partners, which was inspired by British architect John Nash's 1820s remodeling of St. James's Park.
The design consists of gardens connected by a network of meandering paths and linked by a 'Unity Bridge' symbolizing the Queen as 'a powerful force for bringing together people, nations, charities, the Commonwealth, and the Armed Forces,' the firm's founder, architect Norman Foster, said in a video entry. The pathways will feature Elizabeth II's words, both as audio installations and inscriptions on the path, including a quote from her 1953 coronation speech: 'Throughout all my life and with all my heart I shall strive to be worthy of your trust.'
Proposed sculptures include new figurative statues of the Queen and Prince Philip, as well as a 'Wind Sculpture' designed by the British artist Yinka Shonibare, intended to serve as a place of 'reflection and shared experience.'
The proposal from landscape architecture studio J&L Gibbons centers on a vision of the late Queen as 'the nation's bedrock' by incorporating a bridge made of literal bedrock. Its layout also 'invites forest bathing' in a series of glades surrounded by trees. In its proposal video, the firm said its design represents a quote from the Queen's 1966 Christmas broadcast, in which she spoke to breathing 'gentleness and care into the harsh progress of mankind.'
Also borrowing from nature is landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith, whose proposal incorporates a replica of a centuries-old oak tree from Windsor Great Park, once the private hunting grounds of the late Queen's former residence, Windsor Castle.
Stuart-Smith's team would digitally scan the tree before casting it as a full-size bronze sculpture. Called 'The Queen's Oak' and situated beside a gently curved bridge, the sculpture would be the centerpiece of the site, its lacquered leaves appearing like a 'golden mirage reflected in the lake' at night, according to the firm's entry.
Other features include bronze casts of flowers from various Commonwealth countries, as well as a 'sonic soundscape' playing recorded memories from people whose lives were impacted by Elizabeth II.
To create a contemplative experience, architecture firm WilkinsonEyre, which recently restored London's Battersea Power Station, proposed pathways with 'threads' symbolizing the Queen's life. Visitors can follow each of the threads, which are built around seven themes, including family, nature and the Commonwealth, representing her seven decades of service.
A pair of bridges, set on two different levels, would give visitors views of the park, royal palaces and the London skyline.

Clean Your White Sneakers So They Look Brand-New With These 7 Easy Steps

I'm known for being quite a sneakerhead and for wearing a colorful array of Adidas Gazelles and Nike Air Force 1 shoes. But that doesn't mean I don't also appreciate my trusty white sneakers. In fact, I wear my all-white Pumas almost every day. Why? Well, they're comfortable and supportive and they work with just about any outfit, making them my go-to travel shoes. In the past year alone, I've taken my white sneakers to bustling London, rainy Scotland, chilly San Francisco, peaceful Savannah, Georgia, and eight states in the southeast of the US. Although my shoes have gotten me around the world comfortably, my once pristine white kicks are now a gross dishwater gray. Although I'm one of those people who will wear sneakers until they're literally falling apart, sporting dirty white sneakers isn't always the bold fashion statement I want to make. Instead of throwing my shoes away and buying another $60 pair, I can clean them for much less so they look as close to brand new as possible. I can't permanently remove crease lines, but I can get rid of dirt, scuffs and other signs of wear and tear. Here are the steps I use to clean dirty white shoes and make them look new again. Read more: Here's How to Clean Your Dirty Running Shoes Without Ruining Them What you need to clean your white shoes You need very few materials to get your white shoes back in tip-top shape. These items are probably all lying around your home: Water Bleach Three bowls Toothpaste (optional) Clean cloth or sponge White vinegar or baking soda Mild detergent or shoe cleaner Soft-bristled brush or old toothbrush Magic Eraser or a similar cleaning sponge How to clean your white shoes You can use several methods. Following these steps should help to refresh your white shoes and make them look new again. Step 1: Remove accessories and bleach laces Start by removing shoelaces and any inserts from the shoes. Set shoes aside because you'll start with bleaching laces. To prepare the solution, mix 1/4 cup of bleach per gallon of water in a large bowl. I recommend you use oxygen-based bleach, which is safe for white and colored laces. Place the laces in the bowl with the mixture and let sit for up to an hour. You can finish the following steps in the meantime. Step 2: Remove loose particles Back to the shoes. Use a dry soft-bristled brush or toothbrush to gently brush off any loose dirt or debris from the sides and bottom of the shoes. I recommend doing this step over a trash can for easy cleanup. Step 3: Spot clean exterior For tough stains, mix a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water or baking soda and water in the other bowl. Either mixture works just as well and which one you pick really depends on what you have more readily available. Apply this solution to the outside of the shoes and gently scrub with a clean brush or cloth. Step 4: Wash the shoes Mix a small amount of mild detergent with water in another bowl. You could also use a store-bought shoe cleaner for this step. Dip a clean cloth or sponge in the solution and gently scrub the entire shoe surface, working from the top to the sides, then the bottom. Bonus tip for fabric shoes: If the shoes are still discolored, you can try using toothpaste on the fabric parts. Apply a small amount of toothpaste to the stains, scrub gently with a brush and then wipe clean with a damp cloth. Step 5: Rinse and dry Use a clean, soft cloth to remove any mixture residue. Let the shoes air dry, away from direct sunlight or heat sources. While they dry, remove the laces from the bleach solution. Rinse the laces in cold water, then wash them by hand or in the washing machine. Step 6: Brighten the soles For rubber soles, you can use a Magic Eraser to brighten them up and remove any remaining scuffs. Step 7: Replace accessories Once the shoes and laces are completely dry, reinsert the clean shoelaces and any other accessories removed from the shoes. Voila. Now your shoes look new (or at least as close to new as possible). How often you should clean your white shoes The frequency with which you clean your shoes will depend on how often you wear them and the conditions in which they are worn, but here are some general guidelines to follow: Always wipe down your white shoes with a water-dampened cloth after wearing them in the rain or as soon as you notice any discoloration marks. Store your shoes inside in a dry place to prevent discoloration or molding. Do a light cleaning every two weeks or so. Deep clean every six weeks or so. All of these tips will ensure that stains don't set in over time, which can make cleaning them more difficult, and keep your shoes wearable for longer. Can you clean white shoes in a washing machine? Hand-washing shoes is usually the best practice but some white sneakers and shoes are safe in the washing machine. To check, find the care label usually located on the underside of the tongue. It should tell you if you can machine-wash or not. Shoes made of leather, suede, rubber and vinyl should never be put in the washing machine. Cotton, nylon and polyester shoes are normally safe in the machine, but if you're unsure, definitely err on the side of caution and hand-wash. King wears black armband in memory of India air disaster at Trooping the Colour

The King wore a black armband in tribute to those killed in the Air India plane crash as the Trooping the Colour ceremony staged in his honour began. Charles' official birthday was marked with a display of military pomp and pageantry but at the King's request the event acknowledged the aviation disaster that claimed the lives of 241 passengers and crew, including more than 50 British nationals, as well as around 30 people on the ground. The head of state and his wife left Buckingham Palace in a carriage at the head of a procession travelling along The Mall and into Horse Guards Parade where hundreds of guardsmen were on parade. The appearance of the Prince and Princess of Wales' children sparked cheering when they were spotted in a carriage with their mother, Kate. Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis followed the King and Queen, with other coaches carrying the Duchess of Edinburgh, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. Riding behind the King were the royal colonels wearing black armbands – the Prince of Wales, who is Colonel of the Welsh Guards; the Princess Royal, Colonel of the Blues and Royals; and the Duke of Edinburgh as Colonel of the Scots Guards. The Royal Procession was accompanied by the Sovereign's Escort of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and the sounds of the Band of the Household Cavalry, led by two shire drum horses bearing solid silver kettle drums. Senior officers taking part in Trooping also wore black armbands as a mark of respect for the aviation victims, as did the coachmen and women from the Royal Mews, driving carriages carrying members of the royal family or riding on a coach's lead horse as a postilion. A minute's silence will be observed after the King has inspected the guardsmen on the parade ground. It will be signalled by a bugler sounding the Last Post and will end with the Reveille. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said the King had requested amendments to the Trooping the Colour programme 'as a mark of respect for the lives lost, the families in mourning and all the communities affected by this awful tragedy'. In 2017, Trooping was held a few days after the Grenfell Tower blaze and the loss of life was marked by a minute's silence in a decision taken by Queen Elizabeth II. George, Charlotte and Louis joined other members of the monarchy in the former office of the Duke of Wellington to watch the Trooping the Colour spectacle in honour of their grandfather, the King. Kate took her place next to the King and Queen on the dais, in her role as Colonel of the Irish Guards – a symbolic position and one she was unable to take up last year because she was receiving cancer treatment, and instead watched the ceremony with her children. Trooping the Colour is as much a social occasion as a ceremonial celebration of the King's official birthday, and stands around Horse Guards Parade were filled with around 8,000 wives, girlfriends and the parents of the guardsmen and officers on parade. The colour – regimental flag – being trooped this year was the King's Colour of Number 7 Company, Coldstream Guards, also known as the Sovereign's bodyguard and which is celebrating its 375th anniversary. The King's first duty was to inspect the troops and he was followed by the royal colonels, William, Anne and Edward, as he travelled in a carriage with the Queen, Colonel of the Grenadier Guards, past the servicemen. The minute's silence was observed when Charles and Camilla returned to the dais, following an announcement to the spectators and a bugler sounding the Last Post. Charles, Camilla and Kate stood still looking ahead and the silence was broken by a helicopter flying overhead, with the moment of reflection ending with the Reveille being played.

Woman Says Her 14-Year-Old Stepdaughter Keeps Calling Her Mom, Despite Being Warned Her Actual Mother Will Be Furious

A woman says her 14-year-old stepdaughter has started calling her 'mom' She says that while she appreciates the gesture, she's worried that the teen's actual mother will find out and be furious The woman shared her story on a popular community forum to seek advice from others about how she should handle the situationA woman says her stepdaughter has started calling her 'mom' — and she's afraid the teen's mother will be furious. The woman explains her dilemma in the 'Am I Being Unreasonable?' forum on the U.K.-based community site a place where women can go to seek input and advice from other women. In her post, the woman says that she has been in her 14-year-old stepdaughter's life for 12 years, and that her stepdaughter has always called her by her first name. However, the original poster (OP) says that recently, her stepdaughter started calling her 'mom.' 'I've corrected her over and over, as has her dad, and I've gently explained that I'm not her mom, she has a mom, and if said mom found out we'd both be toast!' the woman says. 'Does anyone have any advice on how to gently revert back to the way things were?' the OP then asks her fellow community members. In a follow-up comment to her post, the woman explains that her stepdaughter's relationship with her birth mother has 'gone massively downhill lately' due to 'typical teenage mother/daughter stuff.' Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. She says that while she loves that her stepchild calls her mom, she also knows it would cause major drama. 'I can't even put into words the grief she would give both of us, and I don't want that for [my] step-daughter,' she says. A number of the woman's fellow community members said that — for better or worse — there's not much to be done about the situation. "At 14, I'd leave it,' one person said. 'She knows what she is saying. She knows who her mom is. It's a compliment to you, really.' The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now! 'It's her choice, and she is old enough to make it. Most stepparents would just enjoy it,' someone else said. Another person said that the OP should perhaps work on embracing the situation and think less about the potential consequences. 'This child wants to feel connected to you and safe in that important mother/daughter relationship. It's a gift she is giving you and herself. Instead of treating this like a problem or a river to be dammed, think of it like a flow of water to be channeled safely, to grow the relationship,' they said. Read the original article on People
