Whitney Point participate in Ag in the Classroom

WHITNEY POINT, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Whitney Point students started their day by reading a book about growing crops, and after, got to touch and taste exactly what they read about. 2nd Graders at Caryl E Adams Elementary were visited by Broome County Executive Jason Garnar, and the team at Cornell Cooperative Extension's Ag in the Classroom program. Garnar read a book to the class called 'The Pie That Molly Grew.' The book was written by a local Tioga County author, and follows a girl named Molly as she plants a pumpkin seed, and watches it grow until it's ready to harvest and eat. 'One of the first lessons that we'll do within the classroom is, hey, where does your food come from? Nine times out of ten they'll say the grocery store. So, we want them to know that ag encompasses food, farming, and every aspect of their life really. So, we need them to know that at a young age,' said Program Lead for Ag in the Classroom Sarah Atwood. After reading the book, Atwood prepared pumpkin pie in a cup using only canned pumpkin, vanilla pudding, milk, and cinnamon. Atwood encouraged the kids to create their own pies in a bag at home.
