Man accused of firing AR-15 rifle at Thurston deputy is in custody, Sheriff Sanders says
A man accused of firing an AR-15 rifle at a Thurston County Sheriff's Office deputy during a pursuit last week is in custody, Sheriff Derek Sanders announced Tuesday afternoon on social media.
'A few minutes ago the FBI Criminal Apprehension Team and other agents took Damien (Madison) and his mother into custody after coordinating a Grappler deployment on their vehicle near the Nevada/California state line with air support overhead,' he said.
'A multi-day, multi-state, multi-jurisdiction manhunt comes to an end,' Sanders added.
The Olympian typically does not identify suspects before they appear in court. In this instance, though, the suspect was still at large and was considered dangerous. The sheriff's office also had offered reward money that grew from $1,000 to $5,000 during the search for him.
Madison, 27, is accused of firing an AR-15 style rifle at a deputy on the night of May 8 during a pursuit, according to a social media post by the sheriff.
According to The Olympian's previous reporting:
Sanders said TCSO was notified Thursday that a wanted felon was heading toward Thurston County from Grays Harbor County. He said Madison had engaged in high-speed chases with law enforcement three times in six months in Thurston County.
He said a deputy and K9 unit were able to locate Madison in Tenino. He was a passenger in another vehicle at the time. The driver fled and the deputy initiated a pursuit over an active warrant for Madison for failing to appear in court on prior charges.
Sanders reported that Madison began throwing items at the deputy's vehicle, then leaned out the window and began firing at the deputy with an AR-15-style rifle. The deputy and K9 were unharmed, but their car became disabled.
Sanders said the driver then let Madison out of the car, and he fled on foot. The driver was arrested shortly thereafter for eluding and rendering criminal assistance.

Afghan man accused of planning Election Day attack in US pleads guilty
An Afghan man in Oklahoma accused of planning an Election Day attack in the U.S. on behalf of the Islamic State group pleaded guilty Friday to terrorism-related charges in federal court. Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, pleaded guilty to two offenses: conspiring and providing support to the Islamic State group, and attempting to receive firearms to commit a federal crime of terrorism. The Islamic State is designated by the U.S. as a foreign terrorist organization. Tawhedi faces up to 35 years in prison. 'The defendant admits he planned and obtained firearms to carry out a violent terror attack on Election Day in 2024, a plot that was detected and disrupted through the good work of the FBI and our partners,' FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement. A phone message was left seeking comment from Craig Hoehns, an attorney for Tawhedi. Tawhedi was living in Oklahoma City last year when he acquired two AK-47-style rifles and 500 rounds of ammunition to target large crowds, according to court documents. Authorities said he had conspired with multiple people, including his brother-in-law, Abdullah Haji Zada, for several months to plot out the attack. Zada, who was 17 at the time, was charged as an adult and pleaded guilty in April. He faces up to 15 years in prison. Tawhedi arrived in the U.S. in September 2021 on a special immigration visa shortly after the capital city of Afghanistan, Kabul, was captured by the Taliban. At the time of his arrest on Oct. 7, Tawhedi was on parole while his immigration status was pending, according to the Justice Department. His parole status has since been revoked. FBI agents had testified earlier that Tawhedi, who worked as a rideshare driver and at auto shops, was under surveillance for more than a month before his arrest.

Suspect pleads guilty to role in $436K courier robbery in Swansea
SWANSEA, Mass. (WPRI) — A Bridgewater man is due to be sentenced for his role in a coordinated armed robbery that happened outside a Swansea bank last year. Steven Madison, 39, pleaded guilty this week in federal court to several charges including robbery and conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery, U.S. Attorney Leah Foley's office announced. Madison was arrested in May 2024 along with two other suspects, Christopher White and Quentin McDonald. Prosecutors alleged that Madison and White committed the robbery, while McDonald was the getaway driver. The robbery occurred on the afternoon of Feb. 19, 2024, outside the BayCoast Bank branch on Swansea Mall Drive. Police said a courier pulled up to the bank's dropbox to deposit more than $436,000 in cash collected from several area cannabis dispensaries. It was then, according to police, that the suspects pulled up behind the courier, pointed a gun at him and zip-tied his hands before loading the money into a stolen U-Haul van. The victim was also pepper-sprayed at one point. Police said the courier got one of his hands loose and fired four rounds at the suspects' vehicle as they fled. The suspects drove to another location in town where McDonald was waiting in an SUV, then torched the U-Haul van. BACKGROUND: 3 charged with robbing courier of $436K outside Swansea bank A fourth suspect, Elgun Mikaiylov, was later charged for allegedly helping to plan and execute the robbery. Police said he was a manager at one of the dispensaries and provided information about the courier service and cash pickups. According to court documents, when police searched Madison's home, they found one of the phones associated with the robbery, along with a $47,000 Rolex bought the day after it happened, more than $5,000 cash, a bag of cocaine and a loaded handgun. In addition to the robbery charges, Madison pleaded guilty to brandishing a firearm in relation to a crime of violence, being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
