Kedah woman loses nearly RM1mil to love scam
ALOR SETAR: A woman has been left penniless after being deceived by a love scam syndicate that robbed her of almost RM1mil.
Kedah Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Supt Loi Yew Lik said the 53-year-old victim encountered a man claiming to be from Yemen through Facebook on Jan 26 last year, and continued to communicate with him via WhatsApp.
He said that the suspect then gave the victim two rings, purportedly as a promise of marriage.
"On Feb 5, 2024, the suspect told the complainant that he had been hospitalised and needed to borrow money for his treatment, promising to repay her when he came to Malaysia to marry her.
"The then complainant transferred RM925,850 in stages through 166 transactions into 15 separate bank accounts from Feb 5, 2024, to March 25, 2024," said Supt Loi in a statement on Tuesday (May 13).
He said the complainant realised she had been scammed when she discovered that the man had not arrived in Malaysia and that the suspect had blocked her on Facebook.
He said the victim filed a police report about the incident on 12 May at 10.49am at the Kuala Muda district police headquarters in Sungai Petani.
Supt Loi advised the public to check with the police before making any questionable money transfers.
He also stated that the public can check through the Semak Mule application, the JSJK PDRM Facebook page, or by contacting the National Scam Response Centre at 997. – Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Activist and graphic artist Fahmi Reza claims he was prevented from leaving the country this morning after immigration officers at KLIA informed him that he had been blacklisted. With just minutes left before boarding, an airport staff member assisted him by driving him to a nearby hotel to print the required documents. Upon returning to the immigration office, Fahmi said he was informed that he had not been granted clearance to leave the country. According to him, the officer said that Bukit Aman had not approved his departure but did not provide any further explanation. He was then escorted out of the departure area. Manjung council: Pantai Teluk Senangin open to all, no fee for relaxation
Manjung Municipal Council (MPM) has denied appointing any individual or association to collect fees at Pantai Teluk Senangin in Lumut, Perak. In a media statement, MPM said 'Pantai Teluk Senangin is a public beach that is open to all for recreation, relaxation and picnics. 'MPM does not charge visitors for leisure activities. 'MPM has not appointed, authorised or issued permits to individuals, associations or organisations to collect fees from beachgoers.' This followed a viral social media post of a family being harassed by an individual who was demanding payment for table and chair rentals at the beach, located 32km from Sitiawan, Manjung. MPM said it posted a notice on its Facebook page on Aug 15 last year, stating that no charges were imposed for beach activities. Bernama reported that MPM said it had collaborated with the Manjung District Police Headquarters to conduct enforcement at the beach against those renting out ring floats. 'Action was taken against operators renting out chairs, tables, tents and floats without a valid licence or permission from the MPM president,' MPM said. Six seizures were made, involving equipment, including tents set up along Pantai Teluk Senangin. 'All seized items were taken to MPM's temporary storage depot for further action according to applicable laws and procedures. 'The seized items included 220 chairs, 19 wooden tables, one steel table, one umbrella, 25 floats and three tents,' the statement said. MPM said so far, 10 permits had been issued to operators. However, only three of these operators were active.
