Not China, not Germany..., Indian railways surpasses global powers with a game-changing move; Here's where it took the lead
In India, the way new cars are being transported is changing fast. Earlier, most cars were moved on trucks by road. But now, more and more cars are being sent by train. Eleven years ago, in 2013-14, only 1.5 per cent of all new cars made in India were transported by train. But in 2024-25, this number has jumped to over 24 per cent. That's a huge improvement for Indian Railways.
According to a Times of India report, railway officials said that 50.6 lakh cars were made in India last year. Out of these, nearly 12.5 lakh cars were carried by train. In the last four years alone, the number of cars going by train rose from 14.7 per cent to 24.5 per cent.
A senior railway official said, 'More car makers now prefer to send their vehicles by train. It's easier, cheaper, and also better for the environment.' India now ranks second in the world
India has now become the second-largest country in the world for transporting cars by train, beating countries like China and Germany.
The top country is the United States, where about 75 lakh cars are moved by train every year. Germany is third, with around 6 lakh cars sent by rail.
If this trend continues, even more cars in India will soon be riding the rails instead of the roads.
Big changes are happening in how cars are moved across India. Earlier, trucks were used the most, but now trains are taking over, especially for longer distances. Fewer cars on trucks
According to sources from the Industry, the number of cars being transported more than 600 km by trucks has dropped by almost half. This happened because Indian Railways is now playing a bigger role in moving cars.
A senior executive from a logistics company said that the road transport industry is facing losses because of this shift. Trucking gives jobs to more people, but now trains are becoming a strong competitor. Indian Railways is offering more train rakes (special trains for carrying cars) and giving incentives to attract more business. What caused this jump?
Railway officials said the rise in car transport by trains is due to years of steady effort. In 2013-14, there were only 10 rakes used for moving cars. By 2021, this grew to 29, and now there are 170. In the year 2024-25, Indian Railways ran 7,578 trips just to carry cars. SUVs can now ride too
Two years ago, Indian Railways redesigned its wagons so that even large vehicles like SUVs can be loaded on both decks. Earlier, one rake had 27 wagons and could carry about 135 SUVs. Now that number has doubled to 270 SUVs in a single rake. This means more cars can be moved at once. Who wins and who loses?
This growth in railway car transport might be hurting road transport companies. But it's helping the environment. Trains cause much less pollution than trucks. Also, for car makers, trains are proving to be a cheaper and more efficient way to deliver vehicles.

"Investing should be simple. And it should work for you. That's the belief that brought Jio Financial Services and BlackRock together. We've blended Jio's digital-first approach with BlackRock's global investment expertise to build solutions around what Indian investors truly need," the mutual fund company said in a post on X. For the first time ever, Aladdin—BlackRock's investment analytics and risk management platform—is now available in India, it added. "This is just the beginning. We are here to redefine investing by making it accessible and affordable for you. We are Jio BlackRock Mutual Fund," it said. In late May, Jio BlackRock Mutual Fund received SEBI's approval to commence operations as an investment manager for its mutual fund business in India. On June 11, the company also informed the exchanges that Jio BlackRock Investment Advisers (JBIAPL) had received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to operate as an investment adviser. The company has appointed Amit Bhosale as Chief Risk Officer, Amol Pai as Chief Technology Officer, and Biraja Tripathy as Head of Product, among others. Earlier this year, both partners invested ₹ 66.5 crore ($7.78 million) into the joint venture, bringing their total investment to ₹ 84.5 crore. The joint venture was first announced on July 26, 2023, when Jio Financial Services and BlackRock revealed plans to enter India's asset management industry. India's wealth management and mutual funds is witnessing significant growth, driven by a rising number of demat accounts in recent years. Asset management companies reported impressive performance in the March quarter, reflecting the increasing trend of stock investing, supported by higher disposable income and a growing number of affluent individuals. Projections indicate promising prospects for the wealth management industry, with expectations of a sharp increase in the number of high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) and ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNIs) in India. Over the past five years, the number of individuals earning over ₹ 1 crore annually has risen by 15%. Forecasts suggest this figure will reach 3.4 lakh over the next five years, contributing to the sector's expansion. Shares of Jio Financial Services have rebounded sharply from their April lows, gaining 36% to trade at ₹ 289 apiece. Jio Financial Services Limited—formerly known as Reliance Strategic Investments Limited, the demerged financial arm of Reliance Industries—entered the stock market on August 21, 2023. It debuted at ₹ 265 per share on the BSE and ₹ 262 per share on the NSE, slightly above its discovered price of ₹ 261.85. Israel-Iran War: No Cause For Alarm Over Crude Oil Supplies At Present, Say Indian Govt Sources

Last Updated: The market is experiencing an oversupply, with no imminent risk of shortage, the sources added There is no cause for alarm regarding the global crude oil supply at present amid the Israel-Iran conflict and tensions in West Asia, Indian government sources told CNN-News18 on Tuesday. The market is experiencing an oversupply, with no imminent risk of shortage, they added. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies (OPEC+) are producing approximately 120 million barrels per day. However, production has been slightly reduced by 5 million barrels, bringing the current production level to roughly 97 million barrels per day. Additionally, countries in the Western Hemisphere, such as Guyana, Brazil, and the United States, have become significant oil suppliers, contributing to the increasing global supply. The supply chains remain uninterrupted through key maritime routes, including the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Despite ongoing geopolitical dynamics, such as those involving Iran and China, the global oil supply chains continue to function efficiently. For India, which consumes 5.6 million barrels of oil per day, only 1.5 to 2 million barrels are transported through the Strait of Hormuz, indicating a reduced dependency on this route. India has successfully diversified its oil sources, increasing from 27 countries previously to 40 countries currently. This diversification strategy has enhanced the nation's energy security. In terms of strategic reserves, India maintains ample stock, ensuring that alternative sources can be tapped in case of a supply disruption. For liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), 50% of the demand is met domestically, and stock levels are adequate to meet current requirements. In terms of export controls, India has the capability to halt oil exports if necessary to prioritise domestic availability. The government conducts daily review meetings to monitor the situation closely and ensure proactive responses to any changes. Among India's crude imports, 38% come from Russia. Furthermore, the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has drilled 500 wells, providing India with access to reserves amounting to 42 billion barrels. Regarding the price outlook, while marginal increases in freight and insurance costs may occur, the market has largely already factored in these changes. The overall situation appears stable, with sufficient measures in place to manage any potential disruptions effectively. India is closely monitoring the Iran-Israel conflict to assess its impact on crude oil and gas supply, government sources said. Officials at the petroleum and natural gas ministry are evaluating the potential effects of escalating tensions between Iran and Israel on India's oil supply. Government sources have stated that due to India's diversified energy sources and its reliance on countries in the Western Hemisphere, the nation is prepared for any potential shortages. It has reserves in place for several weeks. India will consider increasing supply from alternative energy sources, including those from West African nations, to ensure fuel supply security in case Iran blocks the Strait of Hormuz. Sources have indicated that there is an ample supply of crude oil coming to the market, so there is no shortage. India is receiving oil from Brazil, Guyana, Canada, the US, and other countries as well. Up until 2025, the Strait of Hormuz has never been completely closed. Only a third of India's oil supply comes through this route. India is also factoring in increased freight corridor charges and a rise in pricing. Senior oil ministry officials and industry leaders are conducting scenario analyses and preparing contingency plans for potential supply disruptions and price volatility, said sources. The oil ministry reports that India maintains crude oil and petroleum product storage facilities capable of meeting 74 days of domestic consumption requirements. The strategic petroleum reserves account for 9.5 days of this total capacity.
