Father, daughter use 100-year-old sauce recipe to make memories and a business
A father-daughter duo is using a nearly 100-year-old family recipe to create a business and to share the gift of time together.
A few years ago, Scott Fiedorczyk's mother gave him an 'I love you' note and a sauce recipe before she passed away. Her own mother had given it to her.
He hopes to pass down the recipe to his daughter Mya, 26, when she's ready, Fiedorczyk said in an interview.
He and his four siblings grew up eating jasmine rice mixed with the sauce, which has an Asian flair of sweet and tangy notes and includes pieces of garlic and ginger, Worcestershire and other ingredients. They later discovered that the sauce worked well on meats and vegetables, and began using it for most everything — marinade, dipping sauce, glaze.
Fiedorczyk's mother, Diane, held her recipe close to her chest, so he and Mya collaborated once a year to create their own version, yielding 5 gallons to share with family and friends. They loved it.
As Fiedorczyk prepared for retirement after spending seven years as a food truck owner, he decided to not only turn the sauce into a business, using the original recipe, but also to create a legacy and a revenue stream for Mya, who is on the autism spectrum.
In 2024, the Fiedorczyk family officially launched NaNa Sauce, named after Mya's great-grandmother, 'Nana' — Mable Coker.
Scott and Mya sold 1,500 bottles — manufactured by Ashburn Sauce Co. in Virginia Beach — in six months by selling them at the East Beach Farmers Market, online and in other venues. Then, Scott contacted Food Lion to ask if he could get the sauce on store shelves. His selling points: The product had proved viable; he had shopped there for decades; and Mya works there full time — now for four years. The process was long, he said, but in August his goal became a reality.
Customers can find NaNa Sauce in more than 50 Food Lion stores in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach. It retails for $7.99 for 16-ounce bottles — $8.99 on Fiedorczyk's website, scottsauces.com.
Mya said, 'Working with my dad is awesome and fun.' Fiedorczyk feels the same way but wishes Mya's schedule allowed her to do more with him.
However, the time is well spent, he says: This opportunity teaches Mya business and sales skills. She learns how to build relationships and to give back to the community. A small percentage from the sales of the sauce goes to Aid Another, a Virginia Beach organization that provides programs, resources and events to people with disabilities and their caregivers.
Though Scott will be selling the sauce at a market on Sunday and Mya will be working at the grocery store, they plan to celebrate Father's Day together on Monday, sitting by the pool and later enjoying a meal.
Mya thinks it's wonderful that one day she will be receiving her nana's recipe.

Oil Curve Shift Shows Fears of Protracted Mideast Conflict
(Bloomberg) -- The oil futures curve is strengthening on concerns that Israel's latest strike on Iran could have severe and long-lasting repercussions. Shuttered NY College Has Alumni Fighting Over Its Future Trump's Military Parade Has Washington Bracing for Tanks and Weaponry NYC Renters Brace for Price Hikes After Broker-Fee Ban Do World's Fairs Still Matter? NY Long Island Rail Service Resumes After Grand Central Fire Front-month Brent prices have spiked by as much as 13%, but there's also movement for contracts further out with timespreads rallying. The so-called smile or hockey stick pattern that's characterized the shape of the futures curve for months — featuring a contango structure and signaling loose balances in the long term — has now all but disappeared. The widely watched spread between the two nearest December contracts for Brent, a favorite marker for traders pricing in oil's long-term prospects, was around $2.30 a barrel in backwardation late morning in Singapore, with the shorter-dated contract at a premium over the later one. It's flipped sharply from the contango it's been in over the last two months. Other timespreads are also rallying, with Brent's prompt spread, the gap between the two nearest months, rising to as wide as $4 a barrel to reach the highest since 2022 on an intraday basis. The three-month and six-month spreads are all also stronger. That's been accompanied by volumes that are a lot higher than usual in the Asian session. Meanwhile, oil options are also at their most bullish in years, although that could change as the Asia session gives way to London and New York trading hours. A gauge of implied volatility was also higher. 'In a scenario where we see continued escalation, there's the potential for disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz,' which is an extreme case but could leave the roughly 14 million barrels a day of oil that flows through it at risk, said Warren Patterson, head of commodities strategy at ING Groep NV in Singapore. 'A significant disruption to these flows would be enough to push prices to $120 a barrel.' Brent futures were last trading near $75 a barrel. United States (US) Durian Fruit Market Expected to Reach $318.94 Million by 2030, Driven by 5.60% CAGR and Rising Demand for Exotic Superfoods: MarkNtel Advisors
NEW DELHI, June 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ --The United States (US) Durian Fruit Market was valued at approximately USD 230 million in 2024 and is projected to grow to USD 318.94 million by 2030, at a CAGR of around 5.60% from 2025 to 2030. This growth is driven by rising demand for plant-based and vegan products, increased animal welfare awareness, and government support for research and training programs. The durian, native to Southeast Asia, is known for its high nutritional value, making it popular in desserts for lactose-intolerant consumers. The influx of Asian immigrants in the US has further boosted demand for durians, prompting Asian grocery chains like H Mart and 99 Ranch to enhance their supply chains in the country. Additionally, growing agri-tourism in the US is raising awareness of durian and its health benefits, contributing to the market's expansion, as detailed in the report "US Durian Fruit Market Analysis, 2025." Interested User Can Get a FREE sample of the report here - U.S. Durian Fruit Market Statistics: Market Value in 2024: USD 230 Million Projected Valuation by 2030: USD 318.94 Million Forecast Period CAGR: 5.60% (2025–2030) Base Year: 2024 Historical Years: 2020–2023 Leading Segment "By Product Type": Frozen Durian Pulp & Paste United States (US) Durian Fruit Market Research Report Key Finding – 1.) Market Opportunity The US government and agricultural research centers are investing in genetic research and breeding programs to cultivate durian fruit domestically. With suitable climates in regions like Hawaii, funding from the County of Hawaii and Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) supports projects aimed at increasing durian production. This includes training, financial aid, and improving yield and disease resistance. Such investments create opportunities for market players to expand within the US durian market. 2.) US Durian Fruit Market Growth Driver Demand for durian fruit is rising in the US due to its health benefits and the growing Asian-American population, which reached over 24.8 million in 2023. With 45% of American adults classified as obese or overweight, there's heightened awareness of nutrition and superfoods like durian. Advances in cold chain logistics also support this trend, as more consumers embrace Asian cuisine and seek healthier lifestyle choices. 3.) Industry Trend Consumer interest in vegan and plant-based products, especially among Gen-Z and millennials, is rising due to lactose-free options, lower fat content, ecological concerns, and animal welfare awareness. With over 23 billion animals reported killed for products in the US in early 2025, many are turning to plant-based alternatives. Durian fruit, with its creamy texture and rich nutrients, serves as an excellent substitute for dairy and eggs in desserts and smoothies, boosting its popularity in the US food industry. 4.) Challenge in USA Durian Fruit Market The strong odor and taste of durian, native to Southeast Asia, are unappealing to many US consumers, leading to decreased demand. Its smell can linger for days, resulting in bans in public areas in some countries, thus affecting its reputation globally. Additionally, high costs related to production, permits, and imports from Southeast Asia—often priced at USD 32-50 per pound—further hinder acceptance in the US market. These factors combine to limit the fruit's growth potential in the region. Supermarkets/Hypermarkets Segment Holds Approximately 44% Market Share Supermarkets and hypermarkets dominate the US Durian Fruit Market, capturing around 44% of the total share. This dominance can be attributed to advanced cooling technologies, greater accessibility, urbanization, and e-commerce integration. These retail formats resonate well with younger consumers due to the convenience of online grocery delivery, which drives durian sales. By catering to both domestic and international customers, supermarkets and hypermarkets enhance the availability of diverse products, thus reinforcing their leading market position within the US durian fruit industry. 1.) Frozen Durian Pulp and Paste Segment Holds the Largest Market Share of Around 68% The US Durian Fruit Market reveals that frozen durian pulp and paste dominate, accounting for approximately 68% of the market share. This preference stems from the extended shelf life and easier transportation facilitated by advancements in cold chain logistics. Fresh durian, imported from Southeast Asian countries like Thailand and Malaysia, is often unsuitable for long-distance shipping due to spoilage risks. By processing the fruit into frozen pulp and paste, these concerns are addressed, significantly enhancing efficiency in the food industry and reducing labor-intensive preparation tasks. Dollar and other safe havens rise as Israel strikes Iran
The U.S. dollar rallied alongside the safe-haven Japanese yen and Swiss franc, with currency markets abruptly reversing direction on news Israel had launched strikes on Iran. Israel has begun carrying out strikes on Iran, two U.S. officials told Reuters, adding that there was no U.S. assistance or involvement in the operation. Another report suggested that explosions were heard northeast of Iran's capital Tehran. An index that measures the dollar against six other currencies gained 0.4%, and was last at 98.07, in early Asia trading. Against the yen, the dollar slipped 0.35% to 143 per dollar, while the Swiss franc tumbled 0.39% to 0.807 per dollar. Risk-sensitive Asian currencies such as the Aussie dollar and the New Zealand dollar weakened 0.9% each. Earlier in the week, the dollar index hit multi-year lows as investors were not impressed by a U.S.-China trade truce, while cooler-than-expected inflation data fueled expectations of more aggressive interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. The dollar is on track for weekly declines against the yen, the Swiss franc and the euro. Crude prices jumped more than $4 on the news as investors priced in potential supply disruptions from the oil-rich region, while gold prices climbed 0.8% to their strongest since early May.
