The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 9 warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms over the eastern half of the Eastern Cape with possible flooding over the OR Tambo District Municipality.
A Level 9 warning is their top-tier alert for extreme weather, signifying severe risk to life, infrastructure, and mobility.
This as the cut-off low system persists over the interior of the country.
These weather conditions are expected to result in widespread flooding of roads and settlements and pose a danger to life due to fast flowing streams/deep water. 'Postpone travel'
Widespread transport routes and travel services may be severely affected as well as prolonged disruption to essential services like water, electricity, communities and schools.
The SAWS has strongly encouraged residents to look out for regular weather updates.
'Postpone travel arrangements until it is safer to travel. Avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams. Monitor the weather conditions and if needs be, identify areas to safely store valuable items from flood water,' the SAWS urged.

The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has activated its disaster management teams in response to the severe cold front and associated weather conditions that have struck the province since Monday. SA News reports that the provincial government, in a statement issued yesterday, confirmed that emergency response teams have been dispatched to various areas and are working around the clock to provide critical support to communities impacted by heavy rainfall, strong winds and snowfall. The South African Weather Service has issued an Orange Alert Level 6, warning of disruptive snowfall in high-lying regions of the province, potential road closures, flooding and possible power interruptions. Several roads have been affected by the heavy rains, including the R61 from Mthatha to Ngcobo and the N2 to Kokstad near Emakhaphetshwini outside Mthatha. Damages have also been reported to homes in the OR Tambo, Joe Gqabi, and Sarah Baartman districts, as well as in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Rescue teams were dispatched to bolster rescue efforts along the R61 outside Mthatha, where three children were stuck in a tree. The children have since been rescued. The provincial government also confirmed that roads such as Wapadsberg Pass, along the R61 between Nxuba and Graaff-Reinet, have been blanketed in snow, prompting a warning to motorists to drive with extreme caution. 'The provincial government's primary objective is to safeguard lives and infrastructure during this extreme weather event. Community members are advised to remain alert, monitor official updates, and strictly follow safety directives,' the provincial government said. Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has urged all motorists to exercise extreme caution and avoid non-essential travel, as well as travelling through flood-prone and mountainous areas. He also urged citizens to immediately report hazards, such as downed power lines and road accidents, to the nearest authorities. 'Our disaster teams are on high alert and ready to respond wherever assistance is needed. We urge the public to stay cautious and prioritise safety above all else. 'Government is fully mobilised, co-ordinating closely with local municipalities and emergency services to manage the impact of the weather system and support those affected,' Mabuyane said. The Witness meanwhile reports that the death toll from flooding in eastern parts of South Africa has risen to nine as rescuers search for children missing after a minibus was swept away, the local government said earlier today. The Citizen reported that the vehicle was found this morning after floodwaters receded, but 11 children are still missing. Heavy snowfall and storms have affected areas of the Eastern Cape, with the entire country experiencing extreme winter weather conditions since last week. Torrential rains in the OR Tambo district have now claimed nine lives, a statement from the local government said, raising an earlier toll of seven. While Bree Street already featured a designated cycle lane, the latest upgrade introduces protective elements like tactical bollards and kerbs, significantly improving safety and usability for cyclists. 'I have seen exciting progress being made with the upgrade of the Bree Street cycle lane between Shortmarket Street and Hans Strijdom Avenue,' said the City's Mayco Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas. At least seven killed in Eastern Cape floods
The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has confirmed the death of seven people due to recent flooding emanating from inclement weather conditions in the province. These losses occurred amid intense cold, wet, and windy conditions that have severely affected several communities in the province; however, the fatalities have for now been reported from various areas in the OR Tambo District Municipality. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had also issued several warnings for disruptive snow, rainfall, damaging winds, and waves in parts of the province after a cold front made landfall at the weekend. The Eastern Cape Provincial Government stated that the severe weather conditions have also caused significant damage to road infrastructure, displacement of residents, and, unfortunately, loss of life. The Provincial Government's spokesperson Khusela Rantjie said police reports have also confirmed that six bodies were found along Decoligny village in Mthatha, while the seventh body was recovered at Tsolo near Bedlana River. The search is still ongoing regarding a minibus carrying school children that swept away earlier this morning. Rantjie said as disaster management teams work tirelessly to assist affected households and secure the safety of residents, Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has deployed MECs to support the O.R. Tambo District Municipality in its efforts to rescue citizens, including ensuring the provision of necessary resources. 'As the weather persists, the province's priority is the safety and well-being of residents, while working to mitigate damage to infrastructure and restore essential services,' Rantjie said. Meanwhile, Mabuyane has emphasised the urgent need for caution, urging community members to avoid flooded areas, remain alert on slippery roads, and promptly report any hazards to authorities. 'This is a devastating reminder of nature's force. We urge everyone to exercise extra caution in areas prone to flooding.
