‘I needed to wake the f*** up': Pitt opens up on AA meetings

Hollywood star Brad Pitt has opened up about his experience with Alcoholics Anonymous following his tumultuous split from ex-wife Angelina Jolie.
The 61-year-old Oscar winner showed his vulnerable side as he spoke about attending AA meetings for 18 months during an interview on Armchair Expert, a podcast hosted by fellow actor Dax Shepherd.
Pitt revealed that attending AA meetings was 'an amazing thing' for him to help navigate his sobriety journey after Jolie filed for divorce in 2016.
'It was when I was first getting sober,' Pitt explained to Shepherd. 'I just thought it was just incredible. Men sharing their experiences, their foibles, their missteps, their wants, their aches, and a lot of humour with it.'
'I thought it was a really special experience.'
Shepherd asked the movie star if he was nervous to chat on the podcast with him after they had met at an AA meeting, but Pitt told the podcast host that he was 'quite at ease' with the decision.
The Fight Club star, who shares Maddox, 23, Pax, 21, Zahara, 20, Shiloh, 19, and 16-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox with Jolie, admitted that despite initially struggling to open up during group sessions, he 'really grew to love it'. 'I was pretty much on my knees, and I was really open,' Pitt said.
'I was trying anything and everyone. Anything anyone threw at me. It was a difficult time. I needed rebooting. I needed to wake the f*** up in some areas. And it just meant a lot to me.'
After a few AA meetings, Pitt said it was something he began to look forward to, adding that he feels he is 'pretty good at taking responsibility' for and 'owning up to' mistakes he's made.
'And now it's a quest to, you know, 'What do I do with this? How can I right this and make sure it doesn't happen again?' Pitt said.
The actor, who stars in the upcoming F1 film, first revealed to The New York Times that he attended AA meetings after his high-profile divorce from Jolie.
In that interview, Pitt shared how committed he was to his sobriety.
'I had taken things as far as I could take it, so I removed my drinking privileges,' he said at the time.
He added how 'freeing' it was to open up in his recovery group, which was all men.
'It was this safe space where there was little judgement, and therefore little judgement of yourself.'
The episode aired shortly after Pitt attended the European Premiere of F1: The Movie in London. Watching F1 The Movie ‘feels like you're at a real Grand Prix, because we were', says director

'That was a huge logistical challenge,' said director Joseph Kosinski. 'Usually when we're making a movie, we are in control of our own schedule. We can spend hours or days shooting a scene… But when you're shooting at a real Grand Prix, we had to work with the F1 schedule… 'The key here was to cast phenomenal actors, and both Brad and Damson are definitely that. When the time pressure was on, they brought their A game, and you feel that energy when you're watching the film. 'You feel like you're at a real Grand Prix, because we were.'

'I didn't find it very gripping': Tobias Menzies found it hard to watch F1 as a sport

Tobias Menzies doesn't find Formula One very interesting. The 51-year-old actor plays the APX GP board member Peter Banning in the new movie F1 but confessed that the sport didn't grab his attention when the cast and crew were shooting at Grand Prix events across the world. Tobias told The Times newspaper: "It's a very strange world and, if I'm totally honest, as a spectator I didn't find it very gripping. When you're watching the track, sometimes you wouldn't know who had gone past. "There's a crazy circus quality to it – these teams just land for three days in this place and then move on. It's like theatre on steroids." The Crown actor recalled how he was taken aback during his first day working on the picture – which stars Brad Pitt in the lead role – as filming took place on the grid at Silverstone just minutes before the British Grand Prix got underway. Menzies said: "All the real drivers were there, the real crowd. We had to run out of there because the cars had to take off for the warm-up lap. That was my first day and I'm like, this is nuts." Tobias didn't have to drive an F1 car for the movie but sensed that Pitt had improved behind the wheel during the course of the production after shooting numerous high-speed sequences for his role as racing driver Sonny Hayes. He explained: "What I love about this film is just how fast it looks. "Brad said he found it unbelievably rewarding and my sense was that he'd gotten very good at it." The Game of Thrones actor also hailed the "delightfully straight" Pitt for using his movie star qualities to carry the plot of the film. Menzies said of his co-star: "The challenge of the movie is a different thing – he's got to carry the story. "(George) Clooney, Brad, these guys are bringing something suffused with their own natural charisma and attractiveness." Pitt recently revealed that the approval of motorsport fans meant "everything" to him during the making of the movie. The 61-year-old star told Extra: "If we didn't pass their bar, then we were dead, you know? "And to get that kind of, I don't know, response means a lot to us, because we have, again, so much respect for these drivers, for this sport, for everyone, the teams, everything they put into it. They made the movie too. They're a big part of the film."

Brad Pitt says The Adventures of Cliff Booth will be ‘an episode' instead of sequel to OUATIH

Brad Pitt has revealed The Adventures of Cliff Booth is 'an episode' instead of a sequel to Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. The F1 star, 61, is set to return as the titular stuntman from Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood in the David Fincher-directed picture, and Pitt has now shared The Adventures of Cliff Booth is not so much of a direct sequel to the 2019 flick as it is an extension of the character's story. Speaking with Deadline, he said: 'This is something Quentin Tarantino wrote. It's an episode, not really a sequel, of the character from Once Upon A Time. '[Tarantino] didn't want to direct it at this point, so our friend David Fincher stepped in to direct it.' Pitt added The Adventures of Cliff Booth was set to enter principal photography next month. He teased: 'So, we're doing it with Netflix, we're going to start in July … should be really fun.' Recently, it was revealed Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul Mateen II, Elizabeth Debicki and Scott Caan were attached to The Adventures of Cliff Booth, though it is unclear who they will be playing. The Adventures of Cliff Booth is said to feature two key female roles, 'one who runs a bar and mud wrestling establishment and one a trophy wife', but it has not been confirmed whether Debicki will play one of these characters or an entirely new part. The Adventures of Cliff Booth will be a reunion for Pitt and Caan, who previously worked together on the Ocean's series. It has also not been confirmed whether Leonardo DiCaprio would be returning as Rick Dalton for The Adventures of Cliff Booth. In Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, fading actor Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) and his loyal stunt double Cliff Booth (Pitt) struggle to stay relevant in a rapidly changing movie industry. As their fortunes shift, they cross paths with rising star Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and the looming threat of the Manson Family. Tarantino is believed to retain the rights to the characters from Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, while Sony - which financed and distributed the picture - holds the rights to the movie itself. As a result, The Adventures of Cliff Booth is not considered a sequel or prequel, despite featuring Pitt's character. Considering Fincher is directing instead of Tarantino, The Adventures of Cliff Booth will not count as the Pulp Fiction filmmaker's 10th and final project. The director was due to work with Pitt - who had also appeared in Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds in 2009 - on The Movie Critic, though the filmmaker dropped the project in April 2024. According to Deadline, Tarantino had 'simply changed his mind' after delaying production to rewrite the script. Now, he's expected to go back to the drawing board in a bid to find a firm idea for what will be his final film.
