Fury in Scotland and Wales over Keir Starmer's ‘speak English' post

The National12-05-2025

The Prime Minister posted on social media a message to promote his plan, which includes a requirement of a higher standard of English including, for the first time, adult dependents required to display a basic understanding of the language.
The effort comes as Labour battles a surge in support for Reform UK, which won the Runcorn and Helsby by-election and council seats across England with policies including a 'freeze' on immigration.

Starmer posted on Twitter/X: "If you want to live in the UK, you should speak English. That's common sense. So we're raising English language requirements across every main immigration route."
SNP MSP James Dornan replied to the post, writing: "You truly are a Little Englander. Let's see how you cope if other countries follow suit and all these Costa Del Fortune residents come back with their illnesses and disabilities from countries where they think speaking the local language simply means shouting louder. Pathetic."
Plaid Cymru Westminster leader Liz Saville Roberts (below) also responded, with :"The Welsh language holds the same legal status as the English language in Wales. Labour under Keir Starmer are forgetting about Wales and our nation's identity once again.
"Where's the common sense in devaluing our heritage?"
Neil Alexander, Scottish LibDems spokesperson for culture and sport, replied: "What about Gaelic Sir Keir? Are those speaking it in Scotland not welcome? It's almost like no lessons were learned in losing seats in the local elections to the LibDems."
"If you live in Wales you should speak Welsh. Or are we not doing that?", Welsh author and presenter Jess Davies responded.
BBC Radio 4 presenter David Aaronovitch said: "My grandmother couldn't. Would she have been sent back to Russia? Not let in in the first place?"

One person wrote: "Genuinely had to check this didn't come from a parody account!
"What about all the Brits living in Spain, Dubai etc. who don't speak a word of the countries language?"
Another campaigner responded, "thalla's cac," which translates from Scottish Gaelic to "Away and sh*te [yourself]".

Revised York parking charges approved by council after backlash

Plans to lower some parking charges in York have been approved following a backlash against price hikes. In late April, car parking spots including Bishopthorpe Road saw prices rise by 500% from 80p per hour to £ of York Council hoped the increases would cut congestion, but local traders reported a drop in takings due to the "unaffordable" a meeting on Tuesday, the council's executive decided to cut on-street parking fees outside the inner ring road to £3 per hour from early July. Kate Ravilious, Labour's transport spokesperson on the council, said the local authority had listened to raised concerns about the price hike. "While we remain committed to tackling congestion and making it easier for everyone to get around, it is clear that some of the changes introduced were too much, too soon," she to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, parking at Bishopthorpe Road's car park would cost £3 per hour, with a maximum stay of three hours. It will also mean no Friday, Saturday or event uplift and no evening charge in the outer inner ring road car parking in Micklegate and Priory Street will also be £3 per hour, the council confirmed, however fees would be "reviewed in the future". The Labour administration previously said April's hikes were needed to deal with traffic issues and to help balance council said: "Congestion is throttling York - buses, deliveries and essential workers are delayed and lives are put at risk because emergency services are stuck in traffic."One third of city centre traffic is drivers searching for a parking space, and whenever I or anyone drives into York we're contributing to that congestion."Acknowledging concern about the recent price lift, she added: "I take on board the challenges that have been raised and I welcome the commitment to work together going forward."Liberal Democrat Nigel Ayre said the recent changes had failed to discourage car use, shore up the council's finances or support local businesses."This has led to an entirely unsatisfactory situation which could and should have been avoided," the opposition leader said. "We have a parking policy which has been made up on the hoof, it's half-hearted and doesn't please anyone." Councillor claims Ammanford masterplan is a 'smokescreen'

Cllr Anthony Jones believes the proposed masterplan is a way for Carmarthenshire County Council to profess there are plans to develop and improve Ammanford. This comes after the county council released an update on the Ammanford masterplan, confirming that a feasibility masterplan is being carried out. Cllr Jones said: 'The recent county council capital budget plan shows no investment in Ammanford, and I believe this masterplan is a smokescreen to pretend there is an intention of doing something. 'Timelines of a masterplan will now put an investment further away and be used as an excuse not to invest until the report is back and then shelved. 'Personally, I can't believe the county councils plan is another study! This will mean more taxpayers money spent on consultants than providing for the town. 'Ammanford requires immediate investment like the Debenhams and Wilko's store where action was undertaken immediately to benefit Carmarthen Town. We welcome this for Carmarthen, but we are promised a plan in comparison.' Cllr Jones, who is leader of the Labour Party on Ammanford Town Council, has also blamed the Plaid Cymru administration. He continued: 'This lack of investment for Ammanford comes from the lack of proper representation from the Plaid Cymru county councillors elected to serve the town; their silence is deafening. 'Ammanford has been demoted by the decisions at County Hall. The eviction of town council is the final insult without consultation or consideration of options for the taxpayers who paid for it before Carmarthenshire took custodianship of our assets. 'This administration is worse than Conservatives, because they pretend to care while disposing of an asset required long into the future. Ammanford continues to be exploited with jobs losses and Plaid Cymru elected representatives saying nothing.' Meanwhile, Cabinet member for resources, Cllr Alun Lenny has responded to Cllr Jones claims, reiterating there is a masterplan for Ammanford. Cllr Lenny said: 'The new feasibility study which Labour's Anthony Jones ridicules, is substantially funded by the Welsh Labour Government! 'It builds on the masterplan by enabling the County Council to be ready to bid for substantial UK Government funding once the details are announced later this year. 'This study is an essential part of the process of securing huge investment to transform Ammanford Town centre, something which most local people would welcome, I'm sure. 'I'm personally quite shocked that Anthony, whom I've known well for many years, should accuse me of not telling the truth and misleading the council when I said that there is an Ammanford Masterplan. That's a very serious accusation.'

Neal Ascherson: Gazans paying the price for Israel's military failure

The lesson of the past three years in Gaza is that Israel's war there has been a gross military failure. In reality, Israel's army is incompetent and disorganised. The weakness is in tactics, training and morale, and it's the people of Gaza who are paying for it. The IDF, staggering under the weight of every kind of sub-nuclear weaponry and intelligence on land, air or sea, has been unable to crush a far smaller urban guerrilla force apparently using only small arms, booby-traps and a few rocket launchers. READ MORE: Palestinian jazz singer to share rich heritage through music at Scottish festival This is partly because the Israelis use the old American tactics of the Second World War: don't enter a built-up area which might contain enemies, but first bomb it to rubble. The drawback is that this creates a perfect landscape for snipers hiding in the ruins, which is what has happened in Gaza. As the war in Iraq has shown, this is the kind of fighting that advancing soldiers most dread. House-to-house combat in undestroyed streets is less dangerous, but it's a grim routine which requires prolonged training. And the available evidence suggests that the basic training of Israeli recruits is astonishingly poor and erratic. Soldiers who commit atrocities are usually frightened soldiers. They are also burned-out soldiers, no longer reliable, who should at once be taken out of action before they do more damage. Some of the IDF's crimes against civilians have an element of revenge: it's wrong to underestimate the trauma left by Hamas's insane orgy of murder in October 2023. More often, it seems, the killings have been the reaction of ill-trained and scared men, possibly after suffering a comrade casualty, whose officers and unit commanders have totally failed to lead and reassure them. To explain is not, of course, to excuse. But old-fashioned 'discipline', the traditional remedy for fear, is hard to impose on young men from a proudly self-assertive society of many sects and origins. None of those qualifications apply to the men and women carrying out the indiscriminate bombardment of Gaza from the air, the daily slaughter of innocent families, at no risk to themselves. They are parties to a deliberate crime against humanity. READ MORE: Jeremy Corbyn to table Chilcot-style Gaza inquiry bill in the Commons But the IDF on the ground in Gaza is illustrating a great change in the attitude of 'Western' countries toward warfare. This is the intense and growing reluctance of soldiers and commanders to take casualties and risk lives. These days, a pimply youth blowing a whistle and ordering a trenchful over the top into the machine guns would only get one answer: Gonnae no dae that! But is this proof of a slow spread of compassion and humanity? Or does it only mean that mass killing is now conducted by remote-control drones or by button-pushers in another continent? Perhaps Gaza can show us.
