Singapore Tourism Board, Vietnam Airlines team up to drive visitors to Sentosa

[HO CHI MINH CITY] The Singapore Tourism Board has formed a strategic partnership with Vietnam's national carrier, Vietnam Airlines, and Sentosa Development Corporation to launch joint marketing and promotional efforts aimed at boosting travel demand from Vietnam to Singapore.
Their planned initiatives include hosted familiarisation trips, a feature on Singapore and Sentosa in Vietnam Airlines' inflight magazine Heritage, and participation in travel fairs.
In 2024, international arrivals in Singapore hit 16.5 million, up 21 per cent year on year, and bringing in record high tourism receipts of S$29.8 billion. Of the international arrivals, more than 393,000 were from Vietnam, making it one of the city-state's top 15 visitor source markets.
Vietnam Airlines now runs 21 weekly flights connecting the country's two largest metropolises, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with Singapore.
The Vietnamese flag-carrier served over 400,000 passengers on these routes in 2024, and 116,000 more in the first four months of this year.
Dang Anh Tuan, executive vice-president of Vietnam Airlines, said in a statement: 'The aim goes beyond boosting visitor numbers. It's about fostering cultural exchange, connecting communities, and advancing the sustainable growth of tourism between the two nations.'

In March, Singapore and Vietnam upgraded their bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership – the highest tier in Vietnam's diplomatic hierarchy and the first such tie-up between the city-state and an Asean member state.
Sentosa, one of Singapore's most popular leisure and tourist destinations, welcomed approximately 16 million visitors in 2023, which was at 84 per cent of the pre-pandemic annual average. In 2024, it received 110,000 travellers from Vietnam.
The island is known for its integrated resort, Resorts World Sentosa, as well as family-friendly attractions, including Universal Studios Singapore, the only Universal theme park in South-east Asia, and the S.E.A. Aquarium, one of the world's largest aquariums.
Last year, inbound visitors from South-east Asia was at 5.5 million, making up about a third of total arrivals in Singapore. Indonesia is the top source market in the region, sending nearly 2.5 million visitors to the city-state in 2024.
Singapore Tourism Board's 2025 forecast for international visitor arrivals remains below the pre-pandemic record of 19.1 million set in 2019. However, tourism receipts are expected to exceed the new high recorded in 2024.

SINGAPORE: Renewable energy and carbon credits are among 'priority areas for cooperation' for Singapore and the Philippines, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said on Wednesday (Jun 4). 'Our joint initiatives will support our climate goals, boost energy resilience and unlock new opportunities in the green economy,' he said during his first official visit to the Philippines since becoming prime minister last year. Mr Wong said he and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr discussed ways to build on and enhance cooperation between the two countries. They agreed that it was important to expand collaboration in renewable energy, with Mr Wong noting that Singapore companies are interested in projects in the Philippines such as solar and wind projects. 'Such projects can generate economic opportunities for the Philippines while supporting the Philippines' renewable energy targets,' he said. The two leaders also agreed to accelerate efforts to achieve a power grid for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), an integrated system to enable power sharing and improve cross-border electricity trade. 'This will improve energy resilience in the region and support ASEAN's green transition,' said Mr Wong, who was making his first bilateral visit since this year's General Election. For carbon credits, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding last August, and officials are working toward finalising a legally binding Implementation Agreement aligned with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. 'This will facilitate commercial participation in carbon credits projects, which can spur technology transfer, green investments and create good jobs,' he said. President Marcos Jr said it is hoped that the early completion of the negotiation on carbon credits will result in climate-friendly actions and increased investments in related sectors. That would create meaningful and sustainable livelihoods and business opportunities for both countries, and produce good sustainability outcomes for communities, he said. Mr Wong gave a toast speech during the official dinner and also held a joint press conference with President Marcos Jr. Earlier on Wednesday, Mr Wong took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Monument and received a ceremonial welcome at the president's official residence. Singapore and the Philippines have strong economic ties, with bilateral trade amounting to S$19.1 billion (US$14.8 billion) in 2024. The Philippines was Singapore's fifth largest trading partner in ASEAN last year, and Singapore's investments in the Philippines range from real estate and hospitality to telecommunications, consumer goods and utilities. Many Singapore and Philippine companies work together for mutual benefit in areas including logistics and digital infrastructure, said Mr Wong. 'In trade and investments … our links have continued to grow over the years,' he said. 'Singapore has consistently been one of the top investors in the Philippines, and that testifies to the confidence that businesses have in your economy.'

New firm could accelerate S'pore clean energy import ambitions by plugging financing gap

Singapore has a target of importing 6 gigawatts of electricity by 2035 – about a third of the country's energy needs then. ST PHOTO: KELVIN CHNG SINGAPORE – Singapore recently took one step closer to satiating its hunger for clean power from the region, with the set-up of a government-linked company to oversee the development of electricity interconnectors between countries. This development is significant as it directly addresses a key pain point in importing electricity – the set-up of grid infrastructure to deliver electricity from where it is generated, such as a solar farm in Indonesia, to the households and offices here. There is currently low appetite among financial institutions to fund such infrastructure, largely due to the perceived high risks and large upfront costs. As Ms Sharon Seah, coordinator at the Asean Studies Centre and Climate Change in South-east Asia Programme at the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore, noted, a big hurdle to realising a regional grid is project financing and assessing whether projects are bankable. But the set-up of Singapore Energy Interconnections (SGEI) in April could help to increase investor confidence and attract new funding – and accelerate the Republic's drive to import more clean-generated electricity. SGEI had on May 30 told ST that its role is to invest in, develop, own and operate interconnectors to import electricity. This comes after SGEI announced its first deal to develop a new subsea electricity cable between Indonesia and Singapore. Singapore has a target of importing 6 gigawatts of electricity by 2035 – about a third of the country's energy needs then. The Republic currently relies on natural gas, a fossil fuel, for around 95 per cent of its electricity, and cutting emissions from the power sector is critical if the country is to meet its eventual goal of reaching net-zero emissions by mid-century. Ms Dinita Setyawati, a senior energy analyst at energy think-tank Ember, said the establishment of SGEI is likely to attract increased financing and leverage additional resources for the grid, such as capital, expertise and technology. Ms Seah added: 'Governments need access to financing, investors want to assess viability of long-term infrastructure projects and companies also need to be assured of such support. 'Investors will be assured of long-term viability of infrastructure projects with the involvement of SGEI, which is government-linked,' she said. The Asean power grid, first mooted in 1997, finally made headway after Singapore said in 2021 that it plans to import around 30 per cent of its electricity from low-carbon sources, such as renewable energy plants, by 2035 . The Laos-Thailand-Malaysia- Singapore electricity import pilot was launched in 2022. That same year, Singapore started importing up to 100MW of hydropower from Laos via existing interconnectors – cross-border electricity transmission lines – between the four countries. While additional financing and resources are critical enablers of Singapore's electricity import target, establishing such partnerships also require a great deal of coordination, which SGEI can help to smoothen. According to a May 15 report by Ember, cross-border grid projects require strong political coordination, harmonised regulations and long-term investment commitments. This is because development timelines can span years and investors may view such projects as high risk due to the complexity of regional governance and financing structures. SGEI could help in this area. The firm had said that it will work with partners in Asean and other stakeholders to create the required infrastructure to enable cross-border electricity trade as it focuses on building, owning and operating regional power interconnections. It also said it will work closely with regional partners to develop renewable energy projects and promote best practices, as well as facilitate technical cooperation, within the power sector. Moreover, with SGEI overseeing the development of the interconnectors, successful projects could also become proof of concept that can increase cross-border trade bilaterally or even, multilaterally. While there are already existing interconnectors within the region – such as those between Malaysia and Singapore – lessons can be drawn on how the company works with others to plan, finance and develop new interconnectors and associated assets for low-carbon electricity to be traded between countries when these projects come to fruition. Lessons from these bilateral projects could also pave the way for the development for an Asean-wide power grid. That Singapore is taking the lead on the Asean grid is unsurprising, given the lack of renewable energy resources within its borders. But for a regional grid to take off, other countries also need to be willing to participate. ' While Singapore might take the lead in off-taking clean energy through shared infrastructure, other Asean member states need to be onboard in order to establish a meaningful multilateral cooperation towards a scalable and sustainable regional power market,' said Dr Victor Nian, the founding co-chairman of independent think-tank Centre for Strategic Energy and Resources Victor Nian. For example, countries will need to establish mutually accepted codes and standards, as well as a market and governance framework for regional power trade, he said. Countries can also show strong political commitment for decarbonisation, amend national laws such as allowing foreign investments in critical infrastructure, or provide data to help assess projects' bankability, said Ms Seah. Independent research and energy intelligence firm Rystad Energy's lead renewables and power analyst for Asia Pacific Raksit Pattanapitoon said reaping benefits from a regional grid will require coordinated cooperation between countries. Supplier countries, for instance, will need to know what benefits they can reap from being linked up with another market, he said. When more countries start to signal its demand for renewable energy, like how Singapore is committing to up to 6GW of electricity imports, it could help to create a regional market and provide an impetus to develop the grid. In South-east Asia, renewable resources are unevenly distributed, so having a connected grid could allow countries to trade electricity freely to meet rising demand. Such a grid would hedge against the intermittencies of renewables. Bilateral agreements could also be stepping stones to eventually have interconnections for the region to trade low-carbon electricity to realise the vision of the Asean power grid. Progress is already being made on bilateral deals, as seen with deals between Singapore and various countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia and Vietnam. Connecting the national power systems of all 10 Asean countries is a tricky and mammoth task fraught with many technical obstacles. But National University of Singapore's Sustainable and Green Finance Institute's senior research fellow and energy transition lead, Dr David Broadstock, said that large grids are not uncommon, as seen in regions like Europe, where Asean can learn from. He added that recent developments point to an appetite for an Asean grid. Other than the progression of bilateral and multilateral agreements, a feasibility study of a Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines power integration project is also expected to be completed in 2025. China launches ‘ASEAN visa' for 10 ASEAN countries and Timor-Leste

SINGAPORE: China has rolled out a special multiple-entry 'ASEAN visa' for business personnel from the 10 ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries and ASEAN observer Timor-Leste, its foreign ministry announced on Tuesday (Jun 3). The ASEAN member states are Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. Eligible travellers from the 11 Southeast Asian countries visiting China on business - along with their spouses and children - will be offered the 'ASEAN visa'. This visa allows multiple entries within five years, with each stay lasting up to 180 days. With frequent visits between the people of China and Southeast Asian countries, the new scheme aims to 'further facilitate cross-border travel in the region', Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said during a routine press conference. The new 'ASEAN visa' scheme comes on top of existing visa-free agreements that China has with countries in the region including Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. Singaporeans and Chinese citizens currently enjoy mutual visa-free travel arrangements for up to 30 days, under an agreement that took effect in February last year. Travellers from Malaysia and Thailand also enjoy similar visa-free travel arrangements with China. The 'Lancang-Mekong visa' scheme, launched in November 2024, offers business travellers from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam five-year multiple-entry visas with a maximum stay of 180 days. To attract more global tourists, China has ramped up visa-free travel arrangements with multiple countries. On Jun 1, China began implementing a trial policy granting unilateral visa-free entry to citizens of Latin American countries including Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay. Beijing has also recently rolled out visa-free access to all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. In the first quarter of this year, China received over 9 million foreign visitors, an increase of more than 40 per cent compared to the same period last year, according to Lin. 'The growing list of nations granted visa-free entry into the country reflects China's strong commitment to advancing high-level opening up, while the continuous optimisation of measures to facilitate cross-border personnel exchanges underscores China's concrete efforts to help build an open world economy,' Lin said. 'China will continue to improve entry policies and add more countries to the visa-free list, to allow more foreign friends to visit China to experience our excellent and diverse products and services.'
