Iraq tries to assert state authority during crisis
The Iraqi government has long navigated a path between maintaining political ties with its Iranian neighbor and Tehran's allies inside Iraq on the one hand, and preserving its security relationship with the United States on the other.
Unsurprisingly, it quickly welcomed US President Donald Trump's June 23 Israel-Iran cease-fire agreement.

Hamas: ceasefire conditions report completely false

On Sunday, Hamas denounced recent media claims about its alleged conditions for a ceasefire in Gaza as a 'blatant fabrication' that misrepresents its official stance and serves Israeli interests. In a statement, the Palestinian group denied the details circulated by Sky News Arabia —which cited an unnamed Palestinian source—describing them as 'completely unfounded.' The report claimed Hamas demanded guarantees to protect its political leadership abroad, safeguard external assets, and secure a role in post-war Gaza. 'These lies contradict our clear, public positions,' Hamas said, asserting that its 'demands are never conveyed through anonymous leaks," and accusing the outlet of fueling incitement against the Palestinian resistance and attempting to distract from ongoing Israeli military operations. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump, who previously predicted an agreement could be reached within a week, called on Sunday for an immediate halt to the fighting. 'MAKE THE DEAL IN GAZA. GET THE HOSTAGES BACK!!! DJT,' he wrote on Truth Social.

Israel prison strike in Iran killed over 70

Shafaq News – Tehran The Israeli missile strike on Iran's Evin Prison killed at least 71 people, including prison staff, inmates, conscripts, and nearby residents, the Iranian judiciary revealed on Sunday. The attack had occurred on June 22, damaging multiple buildings inside the high-security facility, including the clinic, engineering wing, and visitation hall, according to Tasnim News Agency. Israel's Army Radio previously acknowledged the strike on the prison, which allegedly holds "political prisoners and opposition figures.' Judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir called the incident 'a fully-fledged crime,' adding that casualties included civilians living near the site and family members visiting inmates at the time. Meanwhile, judiciary sources denied claims that Evin's warden, Hedayatollah Farzadi, had prior knowledge of the attack and escaped, confirming that he was inside one of the prison wards with a visiting delegation during the strike.
