Behind the Story: Surge in scams, and Springsteen annoys Trump

RTÉ News27-05-2025

Latest garda figures have shown a surge in online fraud, as more fake websites, ticket hoaxes, and phishing texts are popping up.
In the latest episode of Behind the Story, Fran and David are joined by Aengus Cox to go through what authorities say they are seeing, and how banks and tech companies are reacting to it.
The team also take a look at the Donald Trump v Bruce Springsteen saga, as the veteran rock star has been taking aim at the administration while on his European tour.
It seems the Boss has touched some nerves in the White House and with Trump, who has since threatened a "major investigation" into the "dried out prune of a rocker".
You can listen to David, Katie, and Fran's analysis on the situation on Behind the Story which is available on the RTÉ Radio Player.

Zara Larsson announces Dublin date in the 3Arena

This comes as Larsson announced the release of her fifth studio album Midnight Sun, set for release on September 26. The Clean Bandit singer said: 'In thinking about this album, I thought, 'What do I want to say? What do I want this to be?'. I really am proud of my Swedish pop heritage, so I wanted to write about a Swedish summer where the sun never goes down. 'And it doesn't matter if it's December: the summer night will be there for you. It's waiting for you, it will come back for you, and you will come back for it.' The album was created over the last year with frequent collaborator MNEK, alongside producer Margo XS and songwriter Helena Gao. The European arena tour will kick off in Munich, Germany on October 28 at Zenith Arena, after which Zara will go on to perform in Dublin's 3Arena on November 7 and Amsterdam's Ziggo Dome on the 12, followed by a run of Nordic arenas culminating in a homecoming show at Avicii Arena in Stockholm, Sweden on November 28. Larsson's run of live shows in support of Midnight Sun officially kicks off with her opening slot on Tate McRae's Miss Possessive Tour across North America, which begins on August 4 in Vancouver, BC, with stops along the way at major arenas like New York's Madison Square Garden culminating in back-to-back shows at The Forum in Los Angeles on September 26 and 27, in line with the album release. The singer has also released her first-ever live dates in Australia and New Zealand for February 2026 supporting American pop rock band OneRepublic. Tickets for the 3Areana will go on sale on Ticketmaster at 10 am June 13 with pricing from €41.20 - €61.85, with an artist presale running at 10am June 11.

Iarnród Éireann releases CCTV footage of level crossing crashes, with 30 incidents so far this year

The majority of level crossing incidents involve road vehicles colliding with crossing gates or barriers, resulting in damage to the crossing/barriers. The most frequent locations involved in incidents are: Serpentine Ave (five incidents, Sutton (three incidents) as well as Bray, Claremont, Coolmine and Sandymount (two incidents each). The data was published on International Level Crossing Awareness day (ILCAD), an initiative of the International Union of Railways (UIC) of which Iarnród Éireann is a member. The theme for this year's campaign is: 'safe decisions – every time.' Iarnród Éireann has partnered with An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority to host information mornings at 10 level crossings on ILCAD. The focus of these information sessions is to inform and educate road users about the dangers of not acting safely at level crossings. Iarnród Éireann has also released footage of incidents at level crossings and have appealed for renewed vigilance from all road users, with particular emphasis this year on making good decisions when it comes to level crossings. Together with gardaí, the state company is planning to operate six garda/Go Safe safety cameras at railway level crossings. The cameras will record motorists using the crossing and will automatically issue a fine of €160 in respect of speeding, or €80 in respect of breaking a red light. Perpetrators will also be liable for three penalty points on their licence. ADVERTISEMENT The cameras will enhance safety for rail and road users alike, including pedestrians and cyclists, by deterring risk-taking at chosen locations. As level crossings represent a new deployment of the garda Go Safe system, the cameras will run in test initially, with activation upon successful test completion. The cameras are easy to relocate and they will be deployed dependent on driver behaviour. Where these safety cameras have been deployed across the roads network, driver compliance of up to 98.6pc has been achieved. At user operated level crossings, Iarnród Éireann continues to install additional train detection warning systems. These measures have now been introduced at 72 user operated level crossings, with a further seven to be commissioned in the coming months and have been well received within the communities that are served by them. There are currently 861 level crossings on the Iarnród Éireann network. These are a combination of automated CCTV crossings, manned crossings and unmanned user operated accommodation crossings. As part of its network wide Level crossing elimination programme, Iarnród Éireann is working to eliminate as many level crossings as practicable. The company has closed 134 crossings between 2014 and June 2025. Almost 300 people die at level crossings across Europe every year and level crossing accidents account for 1pc of road deaths in Europe but 31pc of all rail fatalities. Although Ireland's record is far stronger than the European average, and there have been no level crossing fatalities since 2010, vigilance is essential and Iarnród Éireann is reminding all road users of this on International Level Crossing Safety Awareness day. Jim Meade, Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann said: 'Driver Behaviour is becoming more and more problematic at level crossings and I believe these measures will result in improved safety for all, protecting rail and road users alike.'

Consumer groups lodge EU complaint against Shein over alleged 'deceptive' techniques

CONSUMER GROUPS HAVE lodged a complaint against Shein with the European Commission, accusing the Chinese-founded e-commerce platform of using 'deceptive' and illegal techniques that fuel overconsumption. The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC), together with 25 members from 21 countries, alleged that Shein uses so-called 'dark patterns' that 'push consumers into purchasing more than originally intended'. Such 'dark patterns' include fake discounts and pressure selling, when platforms provide false purchase deadlines. It also calls on Shein to stop its use of the infinite scroll and to provide evidence that 'low stock' messages are genuine. These practices also 'fuel the environmental and societal problems caused by the fast fashion industry', the BEUC said in a statement. Advertisement The complaint aims to complement the European Commission's own investigation into Shein's practices. The EU regulator warned Shein in late May over a series of practices that infringe the bloc's consumer laws, from fake discount deals to misleading product information. The commission gave Shein a month to reply and offer commitments on addressing the issues found during the probe, which was launched in February. The fast-fashion company could be fined if it does not address EU concerns. Shein said in a statement that 'European consumers would be better served if BEUC agreed to meet with us'. The online retailer, originally from China but now based in Singapore, said it was 'working constructively with national consumer protection authorities and with the European Commission to demonstrate our commitment to complying with EU laws and regulations'. - © AFP 2025 and with additional reporting from Diarmuid Pepper
