India Tops World Population Charts; Guess Which Metro Birth Rates Are Booming?
New Delhi: India has become the most populous country in the world, officially overtaking China. While the national population continues to witness a rapid grow, the country represents a contrasting trend. Birth rates are declining in several states and metro cities.
If the overall population is increasing, where are the most children being born today?
Chennai holds the top position in childbirth in the list of India's major metropolitan cities. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) 2019-21, the city's Total Fertility Rate (TFR) stands at 1.65 – which is highest among metro cities. It means each woman here gives birth to an average of 1.65 children.
Following closely are Delhi with a TFR of 1.57, Hyderabad at 1.54, Mumbai at 1.44 and Kolkata at 1.40.
These numbers highlight a trend, which is urban lifestyles, rising education levels and employment opportunities are contributing to lower fertility rates in India's largest cities. Still, Chennai remains an outlier with the highest urban fertility rate.
Interestingly, Gujarat's Ahmedabad is also witnessing a mini baby boom. The city recorded over 100,000 births in fiscal year 2022–23 – a milestone not reached since 2019. It is the first significant spike in births since the COVID-19 pandemic. It points to a rebound in family planning and healthcare access.
There is a twist here. Several South Indian states are now actively promoting childbirth. Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister MK Stalin recently made headlines for suggesting that 'the time has come to have 16 children' – a statement (many view it as bold and symbolic) that reflects demographic concerns.
Andhra Pradesh too has seen calls to boost fertility rates in the wake of fears that if the TFR dips below 2.0, population decline could soon follow.
The NFHS is a crucial nationwide initiative by the Government of India. Conducted across all states and union territories, it gathers data on health, nutrition, education, gender equality and population trends by directly interviewing households. Policymakers use these insights to formulate targeted and effective public policies.
While India takes the global crown for population, these numbers suggest that the country is faced with the dual challenge of managing growth in addition to addressing urban fertility slowdowns. Will Chennai continue to lead the baby boom among metros? Or will policy shifts spark new trends across states? Only time and the next survey will offer answers to the questions.

They added that the government was making efforts to upgrade public hospitals in the constituency. Funds have been sanctioned through the CM for a 100-bed hospital in Thorrur and a 50-bed hospital in Palakurthi. They appreciated the management and doctors of the hospital for their support in organising the camp. 75-year-old diabetes patient dies with Covid
KOLHAPUR: A 75-year-old woman from Pachgaon village in 's Kolhapur district succumbed to Covid-19 on Sunday at the CPR Hospital after four days of treatment. Hospital authorities confirmed that the patient had diabetes and died of complications arising from Covid. However, Kolhapur municipal corporation's chief health inspector Dr Vijay Patil refuted the claims. Even in those critical situations, the crematorium staff performed their duties bravely. People are requested not to spread rumours," Dr Patil said. Covid cases are rising again across country, with Kerala and Maharashtra reporting the highest numbers. Delhi govt sets up committee to fast-track Covid-19 compensation
New Delhi: Delhi govt has formed a group of ministers (GOM) to expedite and examine the compensation process for families who lost loved ones during the Covid-19 pandemic. A senior official said on Wednesday that the committee will address pending claims and identify families still awaiting financial assistance. Chief minister Rekha Gupta had earlier stated that many bereaved families did not receive the compensation promised during the pandemic. "To address this, a special committee has been formed to identify such cases and provide financial support," she said. The senior official said that the GOM is expected to meet in early June. Officials from the revenue, health, and other departments will present individual cases to the committee, which will then analyse the details and decide on the compensation disbursement. Speaking in the Delhi Assembly earlier this year, the chief minister claimed that only 97 families had received financial assistance from the previous AAP-led administration. Official data shows that over 26,700 people in Delhi died due to Covid-related complications. In 2021, the then-AAP govt launched the Mukhyamantri Covid-19 Pariwar Aarthik Sahayata Yojana , promising Rs 50,000 as ex gratia to the next of kin of every Covid victim, along with an additional Rs 2,500 monthly support if the deceased was the sole breadwinner of the family. Families were also eligible for a one-time Rs 50,000 ex gratia from the Delhi Disaster Response Fund (DDRF). Meanwhile, the capital has recorded two more Covid-related deaths in the past 48 hours, raising this year's toll to three. Delhi has logged 81 new infections since Friday, and the current active caseload stands at 375. "Nineteen patients are currently admitted to hospitals, while others are recovering at home," said Gupta, adding, "There's no reason for the public to panic. The govt is fully prepared."
