Connacht finish disappointing season with win over Zebre

CONNACHT WRAPPED UP a disappointing season by winning their first URC game in six and they were good value for their victory at Stadio Lanfranchi.
The next few weeks will be a huge reset for them with coaching appointments top of the agenda but at least they head into the summer on the back of a win.

It sees them finish 13th in the table, nine points off the qualification places with just six wins from 18 league games.
Connacht, having enjoyed 65% possession, led 12-7 at the break but should have been much further ahead after dominating large parts of the opening half in Parma.
It was obvious from the outside that while this was a dead rubber Connacht were fired-up to make an impression with skipper Cian Prendergast leading the charge.
It was appropriate then that it was the Kildare man who finally broke the deadlock after 17 minutes when he bumped through one tackle, slipped through another and fended off a try effort down the left to score after good work by David Hawkshaw and Finn Treacy.

JJ Hanrahan added the extra points from the wing and with Connacht enjoying dominance in the scrum where Finlay Bealham was superb, they pushed forward from there.
A penalty advantage from a scrum gave them the platform for their second try and quick hands from Hanrahan after scrum-half Ben Murphy went wide close to the lines sent Shayne Bolton over in the right corner after 29 minutes to make it 12-0.
But Zebre got a foothold. Out-half Giovanni Montemauri hit the left post with a penalty from 35 metres two minutes later, but they began to build the phases and work their way into the game.
And they struck two minutes from the break, working the ball from deep before Argentine flanker Bautista Stavile finished in the right corner despite the best efforts of Treacy to prevent him grounding the ball. Montemauri landed a superb conversion from the touchline to leave five between them at the interval.
Connacht got on top again after the restart but despite some good probing runs from Ben Murphy, interval replacement Cathal Forde and winger Treacy, they were unable to increase their lead during the third quarter.
But the pressure eventually told and with penalty advantage after a lineout in the right corner Shamus Hurley-Langton found a gap to barge through and score, with Hanrahan adding the conversion to make it 19-7 after 62 minutes.
However, a yellow card to replacement scrum-half Matthew Devine for an offside infringement as Zebre went end to end through winger Simone Gesi and Stavile, was followed by a try from full-back Jacopo Trulla in the right corner with ten minutes remaining.
That ensured a nervous finish for Connacht but a penalty from Hanrahan, awarded the man of the match in his final game for Connacht before returning to Munster, two minutes from time ensured Connacht go into the summer on a winning note.

Gibson-Park backs 'hugely popular' Bealham to go well on Lions tour

Jamison Gibson-Park backed Finlay Bealham to step up for the British & Irish Lions after the Ireland prop was drafted into the touring party for Australia as a replacement for injured Scotsman Zander Ferguson. Fagerson, named by head coach Andy Farrell in his initial 38-man squad on May 8, has been unable to shake off a calf injury he picked up in April and was on Monday ruled out of the tour. That opened the door for Connacht and Ireland tighthead Bealham to become Ireland's 16th player selected for the 2025 Lions and he will be one of four non-Leinster representatives alongside Munster's Tadhg Beirne and Connacht team-mates Bundee Aki and Mack Hansen leaving Dublin for a six-day training camp in Portugal on Tuesday. They form part of a 24-man squad preparing for the pre-tour match against Argentina at a sold-out Aviva Stadium on Friday, June 20. Ireland Test team-mate and fellow first-time Lions tourist Gibson-Park, one of a dozen Leinstermen not to travel with a URC Grand Final against the Bulls to prepare for this Saturday at Croke Park, said he believed the 51-cap front-rower has all the experience necessary to make a success of his latest stand-in role having deputised regularly for Tadhg Furlong in the green number three jersey. 'He has been immense really, hasn't he, in that role of stepping in,' the scrum-half said. 'He's done that role for a few years for Tadhg and he has been exceptional. If I think back to 2023, the Grand Slam year, he was outstanding there as well. 'So he has done unbelievably well, consistently, with Ireland and he is hugely deserving of his spot for sure. He is a great fella to have around, hugely popular among the squad and I think he will go well.' Gibson-Park added: 'He is a tough bugger and looks to get stuck in. He is strong all around, great with the detail, he is nailed on.' With English Premiership finalists Bath and Leicester Tigers also set to play this weekend, Farrell will be without another three players on club duty this week in Bath fly-half Finn Russell and prop Will Stuart, as well as Tigers forward Ollie Chessum, while Blair Kinghorn remains with Toulouse with the French Top 14 play-offs set to get underway. In addition to tour replacement Bealham, with Fagerson ruled out with a calf injury, Farrell has also added two-time Lions tourist Jamie George and fellow front-rower Asher Opoku-Fordjur for the Portugal training camp as cover at hooker and prop respectively. Saracens hooker George, who was a Test selection on the 2017 and 2021 tours to New Zealand and then South Africa, will stand in with two of Farrell's hookers on Leinster duty, Dan Sheehan and Ronan Kelleher. Sale's Opoku-Fordjur is a potential touring replacement for injured Irish tighthead Furlong, though the one-cap Englishman can play on both sides of the scrum. Head coach Farrell commiserated with the injured Fagerson and said: 'It's tough on Zander to miss out so close to the Tour, but now Finlay gets an opportunity to come in and add to the group. This is unfortunately part and parcel of the game, so we always have to be prepared for that. 'But it's great to finally be at the stage where we can get onto the training ground and get to work with these players. 'Portugal will be really important for us as we look to get our house in order with only a few training sessions before we take on Argentina in the 1888 Cup in Dublin.' The squad flies to Perth the following day and opens its tour against Western Force on June 28 with the first Test against the Wallabies on July 19. Bealham's call-up for the Lions has had a knock-on effect on Paul O'Connell's preparations for Ireland's summer Tests in Georgia and Portugal. The Connacht prop had been the most experienced member of the interim head coach's squad and his place has now gone to another Connacht tighthead, the uncapped Jack Aungier, who trained with the Six Nations squad earlier this year having toured with Emerging Ireland last autumn. British & Irish Lions Squad (Portugal Camp) Forwards (13): Finlay Bealham (Connacht/Ireland), Tadhg Beirne (Munster/Ireland), Luke Cowan-Dickie (Sale Sharks/England), Scott Cummings (Glasgow Warriors/Scotland), Tom Curry (Sale Sharks/England), Ben Earl (Saracens/England), Jamie George (Saracens/England), Ellis Genge (Bristol Bears/England), Maro Itoje (Saracens/England) – captain, Jac Morgan (Ospreys/Wales), Asher Opoku-Fordjour (Sale Sharks/England), Henry Pollock (Northampton Saints/England), Pierre Schoeman (Edinburgh/Scotland). Will Stuart Lancaster be a uniting force at Connacht?

The news that Stuart Lancaster is taking over as the head coach of Connacht has caused huge excitment out west. The former England head coach and Leinster senior coach, who departed from his most recent role at Racing 92 in February, has signed a two-year deal to succeed Pete Wilkins who resigned in April. It's a serious coup for Connacht. During Lancaster's seven seasons in Dublin, Leinster won the 2018 Champions Cup as well as four successive Pro14 titles. If he brings even a fraction of that success to his new job he'll be given hero status, and while there's no guarantees in top-level rugby, the Against The Head panel are certain the province is bringing in a figure of real pedigree. "I think he's done more for Connacht this week than spending €100,000 on an advertising campaign, because he's got to Galway, he's met the staff, he's met some of the players, and everyone knows what he did in Leinster," said Bernard Jackman. "You speak to any of the Leinster players, they're incredibly complimentary about his understanding of how to build, how to coach, how to run training sessions which at Leinster is hard because of the numbers but he ran brilliant training sessions, his philosophy on the game, how he develops leadership culture. I think Connacht players are ecited, Connacht fans are excited. "He's a great get. Fair play to the IRFU and Connacht for getting him. "I think it also shows the investment they made in facilities is obviously important for the players and staff, but someone like him... he was on the short list for the Wales job, he was down to the last two for Australia. If he'd bided his time he could have got some big jobs in Europe and he's picked Connacht." Donal Lenihan echoed those sentiments, highlighting the quality of the Connacht production line as another factor that potentially lured Lancaster back to Ireland. "The fact he was over there to watch his son (Dan) playing for Racing recently obviously opened his eyes to what's happened out west for the past number of years," he said. "But there is an incredible number of real quality young players. "I think Lancaster is tailor-made for them. If I was in charge of selling season tickets for Connacht I'd be absolutely thrilled because my job has been done overnight. "I was out with Johnny Sexton at a function recently and he spoke in glowing terms about what Lancaster did for Leinster. "Just his capacity to bring everybody on board, to actually coach, to improve players, to work with people and make them better. People then as a consequence really want to work with him, for him. That's a uniting element in any dressing room."
