Brewers' Murphy and Cubs' Counsell say they've remained friends even while managing division rivals

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee's Pat Murphy and the Chicago Cubs' Craig Counsell have a friendship that goes back well over three decades. That wasn't going to end now that they're managing NL Central rivals.
'I'm sure all of you have great friends in the world, people that you've been associated with for many, many years in different way,' Murphy said Friday before his Brewers met Counsell's Cubs for the first time this season. 'Maybe the relationship changed a little bit. Maybe you used to live in the same town. Maybe now you don't. But your really, really true friends, you don't have to call them on the phone every night and say, 'What happened last night? What did he say? Or what did he say?'
'Craig and I will be close forever. I respect him. I love him. I love his family.'
Counsell and Murphy had worked together in some capacity for much of the last 35 years or so before
Counsell left
his job as Milwaukee's manager to become the Cubs' skipper after the 2023 season. Murphy, a key part of Counsell's staff in Milwaukee,
was promoted to Brewers' manager.
Their relationship started long before either reached the big leagues.
Counsell played college baseball on Notre Dame teams coached by Murphy from 1989-92. When Counsell was hired as the Brewers' manager after the 2015 season, he made Murphy his bench coach.
They saw each other just about every day for most of the next eight seasons. Now that they're working for different teams, they naturally don't talk as often.
Nor can they confide in each other the way they could while working on the same staff.
'It's changed in that we're competitors instead of teammates, so I think during competitive times, (the relationship is) different,' Counsell said. 'It's stayed the same in kind of when we're off game time, we're friends.'
That friendship continues even as they work for rivals.
'I know people would love to have us get in a fight and have a back-and-forth between the Cubs and us – fights and all that kind of (stuff),' Murphy said. 'Maybe that will happen, but we'll still always be friends. He's done a lot for my life, and I'm very grateful for the friendship.'
Counsell's decision to leave the Brewers enabled Murphy to get his first MLB manager opportunity since 2015, when he led San Diego on an interim basis. Murphy responded by leading the Brewers to a
second straight NL Central title
and becoming the Milwaukee's first
NL Manager of the Year
.
'I'm happy for his success,' Counsell said. 'That's first and foremost. You're happy your good friend has tremendous success. We're obviously competitors. His wins don't always bode good for me or for us. You're still happy for his success.'
So far this season, Counsell's had more success. His Cubs entered leading the NL Central, with Murphy's Brewers in third place.

Former Brewers pitcher Tyler Alexander signs with White Sox, Ubers from Milwaukee, pitches the same day

Ex-Milwaukee Brewers reliever Tyler Alexander landed on his feet after the team designated him for assignment. But first, he needed a ride. Alexander signed with the Chicago White Sox on June 8, then hopped in an Uber from Milwaukee to reach Rate Field, where he then pitched three innings in a 7-5 loss to Kansas City. Advertisement "We had been talking to the White Sox prior to today, so we knew if I signed that there would be a good chance of me throwing today. So mentally I had prepared for it," Alexander told Vinnie Duber of the Chicago Sun-Times afterward. "I was prepared to the best of my ability." Tyler Alexander of the Chicago White Sox pitches during the fourth inning against the Kansas City Royals at Rate Field on June 8, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. Alexander didn't make it to the game in time for first pitch but wound up available for long relief, surrendering one run on five hits with a walk in his three innings. The Sun-Times said it was a 90-minute ride. That … seems pretty efficient to reach the south side! "Traffic wasn't great," Alexander said. "Today has been a whirlwind." Advertisement Alexander was designated for assignment a week ago after Jose Quintana returned from injury rehab. After clearing waivers, Alexander opted for free agency, giving him the opportunity to sign with the White Sox. Alexander, signed by the Brewers in the offseason, had a 6.19 ERA and 1.486 WHIP in 21 appearances for the Brewers. He allowed five runs in his last game for the Brewers, a mop-up inning in a 17-7 win over the Phillies on May 31. He allowed runs in six of his final seven appearances with Milwaukee. Before that, through May 16, he had a much more palatable 4.20 ERA. Outgoing Packers president Mark Murphy regrets winning only one Super Bowl during tenure

Outgoing Packers president Mark Murphy regrets winning only one Super Bowl during tenure Outgoing Green Bay Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy said he feels "regret" for winning only one Super Bowl during his tenure, which began in early 2008 and ends in July, but he's "confident" the franchise will soon win another one with general manager Brian Gutekunst and coach Matt LaFleur leading the way. "While we enjoyed consistent success on the field during my tenure, I regret that we only made one Super Bowl appearance," Murphy wrote in his monthly Q&A post at "I would have loved to win a Super Bowl with Brian Gutekunst and Matt LaFleur. We were close many times, and I am confident that they will break through and win a Super Bowl in the not-too-distant future." Between 2008 and 2024, the Packers won 185 total games in the regular season and playoffs, trailing only the New England Patriots (195) and Kansas City Chiefs (186). However, both the Patriots and Chiefs made five Super Bowls and won three during the same time span while the Packers won their only appearance in 2010. The Packers won the NFC North eight times and made the postseason 13 times in Murphy's 17 seasons, but the franchise has lost four consecutive NFC Championship Games since Super Bowl XLV, including heartbreaking losses in 2014 and 2020. LaFleur and Gutekunst are currently 0-2 in title games. Despite having future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers under center for most of his tenure, Murphy's Packers failed in too many big playoff moments and never got back to the Super Bowl -- highlighting how difficult the challenge is every year to climb the NFL's summit. Murphy will retire from his position at the mandatory retirement age of 70 this summer. His successor is Ed Policy, who will assume the role at the annual shareholder's meeting in July. Policy, a lifelong executive in pro football, has big shoes to fill. Murphy oversaw successful transitions from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers and Rodgers to Jordan Love, and while Murphy might regret only winning one Super Bowl, even one title is a remarkable accomplishment worth celebrating over the course of a president's tenure. Can LaFleur and Gutekunst finally get over the hump in 2025, Policy's first season on the job? The Packers have been to the postseason in five of LaFleur's six seasons as coach, and Gutekunst has built a strong, sturdy roster. In 2023, the Packers came up just short of making the NFC title game. Last year, the Packers flamed out late, losing three straight games, including a playoff loss in Philadelphia.
