2025 Belmont Stakes updated odds: Expert analysis and predictions, post positions, jockeys and trainers
While there will not be a Triple Crown winner this season, Saturday's 157th running of the Belmont Stakes does boast the winners of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, Sovereignty and Journalism. Those two thoroughbreds and six other horses will race for the winner's share of the $2,000,000 purse.
Journalism (8-5) is the current favorite with Sovereignty (2-1) and Baeza (4-1) garnering plenty of attention as well but there is speed and potential sprinkled throughout this eight-horse field. Hill Road claimed the local prep race, the Peter Pan Stakes, Rodriguez roared to a win in the Wood Memorial, and Crudo won the 2025 Sir Barton Stakes. A case can be made for each to challenge the favorites.

It often pays, though, to strongly consider the horse that closes as the favorite in the Belmont. The favorite has won the Belmont 66 times accounting for 42.6% of the 156 previous editions of the final jewel of the Triple Crown series.
Renovations continue at Belmont Park and so for the second consecutive year the third jewel of horse-racing's Triple Crown will be held at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, NY. That change of venue also means a change to the distance of the Belmont Stakes. Typically the longest race of the Triple Crown at 1.5 miles, Saratoga means a 1.25 mile "sprint" for the top thoroughbreds in the world for the second consecutive year and the eighth time in the history of the race.

Belmont Stakes Prediction
Drew Dinsick's (@whale_capper) likes the favorites, but not the favorite for the top of his Belmont card.
"The trifecta winners from the Kentucky Derby showdown again in the Belmont Stakes with Sovereignty, Journalism and Baeza entering as the clear top three in the field of eight. Despite winning the Preakness, the fatigue of having run that extra sprint is enough for me to look past Journalism, the morning line favorite. The numbers suggest that Sovereignty and Baeza have very similar running styles and are equally strong closers so their prices should be reasonably close and the horse with the best trip likely wins. The progression for the more lightly raced Baeza is clear steady improvement throughout his 3-yo campaign, so I'll take the price and hope he outduels the Derby champ down the stretch. Baeza to win, Baeza over Sovereignty and Baeza/Sovereignty/Journalism in my tri."

Belmont 2025: Sovereignty Wins, Journalism Places, Baeza Shows
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK - JUNE 07: Sovereignty with Junior Alvarado up wins the 157th running of the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on June 07, 2025 in Saratoga Springs, New York. (Photo by) Laying fourth coming out of the clubhouse turn, Junior Alvarado skillfully pulled Sovereignty wide at the top of the stretch and, seeing his path, the horse brought a mighty run that saw him blaze by Journalism and keep going through the wire. When he hit the wire he had put three lengths between himself and the place horse, with Baeza toiling in show two lengths back. It was as exacting a replay of the 2025 Kentucky Derby as could have been staged — stretch run, order of finish, all of it save the June rain at Saratoga, which had paused earlier in the afternoon to let the track dry out slightly more than Churchill's had, thus reducing the mud. But as in Kentucky, there had been rain. As in the Derby, Sovereignty went off at Saratoga as a slight second-favorite at 5-2, behind Journalism, the (nominal) Belmont favorite who had gone off at 2-1. Sovereignty paid $7.20 on a $2 bet, Journalism paid $3.20 in place, and Baeza, who went off at 7-2, paid $2.60. The win puts Sovereignty in the history books as the only horse not to have competed in the Preakness who won the first and last legs of the Triple Crown series. Sovereignty takes home the victor's $1.2-million cut of the $2 million purse. Breaking cleanly from the second stall in the gate, jockey Junior Alvarado kept Sovereignty steady on the inside but up in contention, as Bob Baffert's Rodriguez, under Mike Smith, assumed the lead. At the top of the back stretch, Umberto Rispoli worked Journalism past Sovereignty just before the horses entered the far turn, putting Alvarado and Sovereignty in fourth. In the far turn it was possible to see Alvarado holding, then steadily collecting Sovereignty under him to prepare the horse to move wide as soon as he, Alvarado, could see a bit of daylight as they worked free of the home turn. That move wide out was natural and deft, taken at rather an oblique angle to the stretch, as if Sovereignty just went a little straighter for a couple of strides out of the turn rather than turning into the lane. He was moving well and so within himself that it didn't even seem like it cost him much ground to cross the three lanes, and there he was, poised in the stretch with a clear shot at the line. He took that shot with bracing elan, passing Journalism handily and moving within the last furlong to a rock-solid three-length lead at the wire. He won going away, galloping out strongly, without a care in the world. If the 157th Belmont had been run at its old length of a mile-and-a-half, Sovereignty would have only added a few more lengths to his winning margin. He is a stallion built for distance, and we can only hope to see him mount these sorts of runs again. ereignty that much ground.

Belmont Stakes in images: Top shots of Sovereignty besting Journalism Sovereignty and Journalism went head-to-head in the 2025 Belmont Stakes on Saturday. It was the Kentucky Derby winner against the Preakness champ. A rubber match of sorts as Sovereignty passed the second jewel of the Triple Crown. Sovereignty and jockey Junior Alvarado passed Journalism and Umberto Rispoli in the stretch of the Belmont, which was run at Saratoga. So, Sovereignty is the King of the 3-year-olds as the class of 2025 approaches the Summer. And he won the Derby and Belmont but skipped the Preakness. Would he have won the Triple Crown? We'll never know. But what we do know is Sovereignty is a special horse. Belmont Stakes 2025 recap, winnings: Sovereignty beats out Journalism in rematch of Kentucky Derby, Preakness winners
Sovereignty is the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes while skipping the Preakness Stakes. (AP Photo/Jessica Hill) After watching the 2025 Belmont Stakes, we can say Sovereignty's win at the Kentucky Derby was no fluke. Once again, the horse beat out race favorite Journalism on Saturday to take the third leg of the Triple Crown, surging through the field in the second half of the race to win by multiple lengths. The victory wins Sovereignty's owners $1.2 million of the $2 million purse, with Journalism getting $360,000 and third-place finisher Baeza getting $200,000. Advertisement Those three horses finished in the exact same order at Churchill Downs last month. A correct $1 exacta would have returned $6.60, while a trifecta would pay $13.80 and a superfecta would pay $40.50. It's the first time since Justified took the Triple Crown in 2018 that a single horse has won two of the three races. Sovereignty, of course, didn't race in the Preakness Stakes, which Journalism won in thrilling fashion to set up a clash of elite 3-year-olds at Saratoga Race Course, filling in for the under-renovation Belmont Park. Rather than put Sovereignty through a quick two-week turnaround, trainer Bill Mott instead opted to skip the Preakness and spend more time preparing for Saturday's race. There's no way to be sure if Sovereignty also would have won at the Preakness, or still would have won at Belmont if he had another race on his legs, but it immediately becomes a major what-if in horse racing history. Advertisement Sovereignty isn't the first Kentucky Derby winner to skip the Preakness, but he is the first horse to win both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes without competing in the Preakness. That extra rest at least seemed to help Sovereignty run the race his team clearly wanted. In a race of three favorites between Sovereignty, Journalism and Baeza, the trio of longshots Rodriguez, Uncaged and Crudo jumped out to an early lead. Just as he did in the Derby, Journalism emerged from the outside halfway through the race to reach the front of the pack, but Sovereignty was right behind him, and faster down the stretch. 2025 Belmont Stakes horse finishes, odds 1.
