Liberty Lane sparks Festival celebration
Last year's Cambridgeshire victor was a fine second to recent Lockinge hero Lead Artist in Group Three company at Newmarket in October and was making it third time lucky this term.
After blowing away the cobwebs in the Doncaster Mile, Karl Burke's five-year-old gelding was a staying-on third behind The Foxes in the Group Two Huxley Stakes at Chester and was sent off at 3-1 for this 10-furlong contest.
Market leader Silver Knott was prominent at the two-furlong pole but the writing was on the wall for his supporters when Liberty Lane loomed up alongside him.
Clifford Lee kicked for home and that proved a decisive move, as he got first run on Meydaan and was always doing just enough to hold on by a neck.
Lee told Racing TV: 'He did everything right today, he jumped nicely, I was always in a lovely position, going a nice gallop.
'He can be quite keen, so because he was nice and relaxed, I thought we were going to have a nice run.
'Going through the three to the two, once I switched out and made headway a little bit, he's travelled really well and seen the trip out nicely.
'He obviously won the Cambridgeshire off top weight and this is a step up to Listed class, so this will probably be his best career effort so far, he's improved and I think he'll probably even stay further.'
Liberty Lane's best form has come with a bit of cut underfoot and Lee felt the watered good ground at the Sussex track suited his mount well enough.
He added: 'I felt like it was just riding on the easy side, it was kicking up a little bit, but maybe if I was on a different horse, it would feel a bit quicker.
'For my lad, I knew cantering to the start he would enjoy this ground today.
'He travels so well and that soft ground probably just slows them down a little bit and it also stops the other horses as well.
'But he's a lovely, big horse and we're looking forward to the rest of the season with him.'

Wisbech father's bodybuilding journey proves to be a YouTube hit
A father-of-three has become a social media hit whilst documenting his comeback in the world of competitive bodybuilding following a 14-year Pearl, 35, from Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, took up training again 18-months ago and has amassed more than 400,000 YouTube subscribers who follow him on his fitness Pearl said he started bodybuilding "to get noticed" and later quit to raise a family, but now wanted to show his children "how dad can rebuild himself"."I am sharing the whole experience [on YouTube]... from bodybuilding preparation, mindset, and diet breakdowns to the chaos of balancing family life as a husband and father of three - it is all there," he said. Mr Pearl said as a teenager he noticed some of his friends working out and he felt inspired to start going to the gym."I really just wanted to attract some female attention and it worked, because I have now been married for 14 years."I did my final competitive body building show in 2011 and then quit to raise a family and start up a business in double glazing," he said. Mr Pearl said now that his three children were older he wanted to train seriously again."I wasn't exactly depressed, but I did feel I should get myself into shape."I wanted my kids to see dad rebuild himself from a completely untrained state," he Pearl added that since January his YouTube channel has hit more than 400,000 subscribers."The public seem to be really resonating with my fitness story and being open and honest about what it takes with my daily struggles."Mr Pearl said the community at BoxCross UK gym in Wisbech has also helped him in his training. "Being able to share my experiences with members and them sharing their stories with me has formed a community built around fitness, the atmosphere is great too," he said. Lazy Griff was ridden by the aforementioned Soumillon when scooping Group Three honours in the Prix de Conde as a juvenile and the Belgian pilot – who has made no secret of his desire to one day land Epsom's showpiece event – is now pencilled in to ride having taken a shine to the son of Protectionist at Chantilly. 'Christophe said when he won the Group Three that he loved the horse, he gave him a good feel and he'd love to ride him again,' added Prince.
