Construction of group houses for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees begins in Tiruchi
Construction of group houses for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees at Kottapattu on Tiruchi-Pudukottai Highway has begun.
There are about 107 rehabilitation camps for Sri Lankan Tamils in the State. Most of them came into existence about 37 years ago. The rehabilitation camps at Kottapattu in Tiruchi district and Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district are among the biggest refugee camps in the State. The camp at Kottapattu has 470 houses and about 1,200 Sri Lankan refugees have been sheltered there.
Several houses in the Kottapattu camp are in dilapidated condition due to age, poor maintenance and other factors. The State government sanctioned ₹33.30 crore to build new houses for the Tamils, who reside in the existing refugee camp at Kottapattu. The District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) has been entrusted with the task of building the houses.
As per the plan of the Commissionerate of Rehabilitation and the Welfare of Non-Resident Tamils, 526 houses with ceramic flooring will be built near Kottapattu. They will be constructed in groups. There will be 131 blocks and two individual houses. Each block will have four houses.
S. Gangadharini, Project Director, DRDA, told The Hindu that it would cost ₹25.30 lakh for each block. A sum of ₹33.14 crore would be spent for building 131 blocks. It would cost ₹15.50 lakh for building two individual houses. It would come up on 10.167 acres of land near Kottapattu. Each house would have a plinth area of 291.30 square feet.
She said the construction had begun. Foundation work of all blocks had been completed. It was proposed to complete the work by August. Once completed, all Sri Lankan Tamils, who were residing at the existing camp, would be relocated and allotted new houses. All other basic facilities, including drinking water and street lights, would also be established.

Over 1 lakh saplings planted across Virudhunagar
Massive sapling planting events were taken up across Virudhunagar district on Thursday on the occasion of World Environment Day. Virudhunagar Collector V. P. Jeyaseelan inaugurated sapling planting drive at the Eco-Park set up by Ramco Cements at Pandalgudi. Priya Ravichandran, governing council member of Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission, Nirmala Raja, were among those who were present.

Clean up drive marks World Environment Day in the Nilgiris
To mark World Environment Day on June 5, the Coonoor Municipality and 'Clean Coonoor', a local NGO, sent out the 137th truckload of zero value plastic to be co-processed as fuel in the cement kilns of Ariyalur. The event was flagged off by Municipal Commissioner Ilamparathi in the presence of trustees and members of the organisation and other municipal staff. With this load, the tally of such plastics sent out either for pyrolysis or co-processing had reached 1,145,074 kg, a release from Clean Coonoor stated. The organisation said that the quantity of plastic waste generated was quite large for a small town such as Coonoor. 'Post COVID has seen a doubling in the usage of such plastics and the chief reason appears to be a more sedentary lifestyle and consumerism which has led to an increase in the generation of plastic waste which cannot be easily recycled,' it added. This season alone witnessed a fourfold increase, but as to whether it was due to generation or better collection was a bit difficult to state, the release said. The Nilgiris district administration also undertook a mass clean up at all government offices and public spaces on Thursday led by the District Rural Development Agency. Based on the District Collector's directives, all town panchayat and other officials took part in the clean up drive across the district.

Over 16,000 homes approved for RR under Indiramma scheme
Rangareddy: Urging officials to ensure the timely construction of Indiramma Houses approved in their operational areas, Rangareddy District Collector C Narayana Reddy stated that over 16,000 houses have been sanctioned so far in the district. The district administration, he added, is committed to benefiting all eligible people under the scheme, and accordingly, all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the timely disposal of applications. Addressing a recent video conference with officials on the implementation of the Indiramma Housing and Rajiv Vikasam Schemes at the Collectorate, the Collector instructed that the groundwork for sanctioned houses should commence immediately and be completed within a time-bound manner. 'The scheme should be implemented properly. There should be a supervision committee in every mandal, and prices of materials such as sand, bricks, and crusher stones, besides mason charges, should be decided,' said the Collector. Elaborating on the number of beneficiaries selected under the Indiramma Housing scheme in the district, the Collector said, 'A total of 16,617 houses were sanctioned to eligible individuals in the district. However, 839 applications are still pending disposal, which will be cleared after scrutiny.' As sand is being provided free of cost for the construction of Indiramma Houses, the Collector reiterated that it should be made available to all beneficiaries. Additionally, the Collector requested that the list of beneficiaries selected under the Rajiv Vikasam scheme be sent to the Collector's login. He stated that beneficiaries under the scheme should be granted at least Rs 1 lakh, to be released in June. Project Director DRDA Rangareddy Srilatha, along with BC and Minority Welfare officers and other senior officials, participated in this video conference.
