Majorca removes sunbeds and parasols from its top beaches

Plus, the couple who booked £47 flights to Majorca for the day 'just to sunbathe' after miserable UK summer SAND-OFF Majorca removes sunbeds and parasols from its top beaches Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FOUR beaches around the capital of Majorca are removing around 1,700 loungers. Palma's city administration has announced that it plans to reduce the number of sun beds and umbrellas by 20 per cent next year. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 4 A number of beaches in Majorca are removing sunbeds Credit: Getty 4 This comes after increased complaints from residents Credit: Times Newspapers Ltd This is because residents in the local areas close to popular beaches have complained that they struggle to find space for their beach towels due to the large number of chargeable loungers and umbrellas. It has also been noted that the beaches are eroding due to climate change. For example, storms, rising sea levels and erosion have taken a toll on the six-kilometre-long Playa de Palma. And whilst this year there are less sunbeds, in 2026 the numbers will be even lower. According to Bild, Playa de Palma is set to lose the most sunbeds - reducing 6,000 to 4,436. Out of 2,503 parasols, only 2,218 will remain. In Cala Major, the number of sunbeds will decrease from 300 to 250. Elsewhere in Palma's coastal suburb of Ciutat Jardi, 12 of the 300 sun loungers will go and so will six parasols. The at Cala Estància, in Can Pastilla, there will be only 132 sun loungers instead of 150 and 66 parasols instead of 75. Other beaches are also looking to reduce sunbed and parasol numbers. The Sun explores Majorca For example, Cab Pere Antoni city beach, which is not the responsibility of the city administration, will also be more than halved. The reduction in sun beds is likely to have an impact on sun bed wars that often dominate beaches at popular Spanish resorts. It could make more wars occur as the loungers become more competitive, or alternatively forced people to bring their own loungers to beaches. 'Premium loungers' in Cala Major and on Playa de Palma could also be introduced in the future though. 4 Playa de Palma is one beach that will be impacted Credit: Getty These loungers would be more comfortable and spaced further apart. However, they would be priced much higher than average loungers. The news follows an announcement from a Spanish campaign group leading a movement against overtourism in Majorca to host a large scale protest this week, that will see 60 organisations meet and protest together. The peaceful side of Majorca has also been revealed – from rugged mountains to spectacular food and cove that is island's best kept-secret. Major £10million St Andrews works will see parts of Old Course closed for months – but there's a perk for keen golfers

WORK IN PROGRESS Major £10million St Andrews works will see parts of Old Course closed for months – but there's a perk for keen golfers THE MAJOR irrigation works due to take place at St Andrews will see parts of the Old Course CLOSED for months. It was revealed yesterday that the St Andrews Links Trust will splash out £10million on a new sprinkler system to protect their iconic links venues from future dry spells. 2 The Old Course is one of the most famous venues in all of golf Credit: Getty 2 But it is due to undergo a transformation later this year Credit: Getty The Trust operates six 18-hole courses at the Home of Golf - the Old, the New, the Jubilee, the Eden, the Castle and the Strathtyrum - and the nine-hole Balgove. Of course the Old is the most famous of them all and is regularly ranked among the UK and indeed the world's best. But the links turf suffers during severe dry spells, much like we saw in Scotland last month. The project will see the number of sprinklers on the Old Course more than double from 800 to 1,500. Work is scheduled to begin in November this year and the aim is for it to be completed in March 2026. Management has vowed to keep the course open for play during this time, with the installation taking place in stages to minimise disruption as much as possible. But parts of the course will be shut off as a result. The Scottish Sun understands that at least two holes on the iconic course will be closed at any one time, with a 'mole plough' used to lay new pipework and cable. But there could be as many as FOUR holes out of play during certain periods. To reflect this, the Trust will reduce green fees from the normal rate. Jack Nicklaus reveals major issues he has with golf interviews in the modern era Neil Coulson, chief executive of the Trust, said: "Over the next five years we are making a significant investment in our courses, not just to improve the experience for all those playing on our iconic courses, but to safeguard their future. "As the Home of Golf, we take our responsibility to protect this land seriously and want to lead the way in securing a more sustainable future for our sport. "The project was one of the first we discussed early in 2022 as we set out a strategy to increase surplus to enable reinvestment into our facilities. "I am pleased this work will soon be underway as we continue to ensure we have the best facilities available for all our local and visiting golfers." The Open Championship will return to St Andrews in 2027. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Five Derby horses who will love soft ground with ‘a hell of a lot of rain' set to hit Epsom ahead of £1.5m race

The going could change by the time of the big race WET WET WET Five Derby horses who will love soft ground with 'a hell of a lot of rain' set to hit Epsom ahead of £1.5m race Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) 'A HELL of a lot of rain' is set to hit Epsom this afternoon ahead of the blockbuster £1.5million Derby. The going was changed to good, good to soft in places, last night after the forecast deluge didn't hit. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Derby fav Delacroix should be able to handle the soft ground should the rain fall Credit: Getty But a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and hail remains in place over the Surrey track. Oli Bell said on ITV Racing that up to 30mm of rain could fall between now and the Derby at 3.30pm. Templegate's Derby tip and 1-2-3-4 prediction With that in mind, here are five horses who should be able to cope if the going gets muddy. 1 Delacroix Heavily backed after Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore teamed up to win the Oaks on Friday, the fav should have no problem if the rain gets into the turf. He is 2-2 this year and finished a nose second on soft in last October's William Hill Futurity at Doncaster. 2 Midak The ground is typically much softer in the France - and that should play right into Midak's strengths. Supplemented for the race at a cost of £75,000, this three-year-old colt is showing signs of huge improvement. And the colossal fee paid to get him in the race - and run under the famous Aga Khan silks - could prove money well spent. 3 Tennessee Stud His odds have plummeted from 66-1 to 33s and it is easy to see why given the forecast. He brings strong form to the table having been beaten by the likes of Delacroix, Green Storm and Hotazhell. While he was a Group 1 winner on heavy at Saint-Cloud in France last October. 4 New Ground Getting into the really big prices at 50-1, this French raider was a winner on heavy last October. He has been campaigned at a higher level since and come up short - but maybe ultra soft ground is what he needs. His sire won a French Derby on heavy so there is certainly hope. 5 Green Storm If Tennessee Stud is a play, then 200-1 outsider Green Storm has to be as well. Owned by Ahmad Al Shaikh, a genius owner who seemingly always gets a big-price fancy in the frame at the Derby - Hoo Ya Mal at 150-1 was the standout - he screams stamina. Al Shaikh is obsessed with winning the Derby and while this would be the mother of all shocks, a small punt each-way could prove the prudent play.
