Stricter lobster fishing rules scrapped after complaints from fishermen about harm to industry

The elimination of the new size standards will require the fishing industry to come up with strategies to protect the lobster population, said Patrick Keliher, chair of the commission's lobster board.

'This action being considered by the board will require the Gulf of Maine lobster industry to develop management strategies to ensure the long-term health of the resource and the coastal communities that it supports,' Keliher said.
The size change was set to apply to the Gulf of Maine, a piece of ocean off New England that is vital to American fisheries and home to some of the world's most popular seafood species, such as lobster, haddock and clams. The commission adopted rules in 2023 that stated legal harvesting size for lobsters would become more strict if the lobster stock in the gulf showed a decline of 35%.
Officials also said in 2023 that the stock declined by nearly 40% when comparing 2020-22 to 2016-18. The decline took place in an era when the Gulf of Maine is warming faster than most of the world's oceans. Scientists have said that can affect the health and reproduction of lobsters.
The nation's haul of lobsters has declined in recent years, though the catch is still high compared to historic data. The catch declined about 11% from 2021 to 2023, federal data state.

One of the reasons many fishermen opposed the size change was because of competitive balance with Canada, which harvests the same species. The lobster industry also 'contributes billions to New England's economy and shapes the character of the region,' said fourth generation lobsterman Dustin Delano, who is chief operation officer at New England Fishermen's Stewardship Association.
'Raising catch sizes at this time would bankrupt many lobstermen and surrender the U.S. market to foreign competitors,' Delano said.

A new map created by Newsweek reveals the locations of the nation's top school districts according to a report published last fall, showing that some states are seen as clear leaders in education according to the report's parameters. Top school districts were frequently found in New York, Illinois, and California, with other states across the Upper Midwest and Northeast also showing strong educational findings. The top three districts retained their ranking from the previous year, Niche PR Manager Zach Chatham told Newsweek. For many American families, the quality of a local school district is a major factor when deciding where to live. Educational opportunities can affect not only children's immediate learning experiences but also their future career prospects and earning potential. As students nationwide continue to recover from academic setbacks experienced during the pandemic, transparent and holistic evaluations of school districts have become especially valuable. Rankings provide parents with a tool for comparison, enabling them to identify districts that best align with their priorities and values as they make decisions about relocation and their children's education. Niche, an educational research platform, has done a 2025 report ranking the top 50 school districts in the United States, evaluating over 11,000 districts nationwide. This is the 11th year of the report. To create these rankings, Niche combined several data points from both subjective and objective sources. The methodology incorporated ratings from current students, alumni, and parents, as well as quantitative data collected from the U.S. Department of Education. GR museum director: Juneteenth ‘catalyst' for awareness, equality
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — As Juneteenth approaches, George A. Bayard III, executive director and curator of the Grand Rapids African American Museum and Archives, says the holiday can drive meaningful awareness, particularly in underrepresented fields like STEM. Bayard said Juneteenth encourages deeper exploration into overlooked contributions of African Americans in science and technology, many of whom hailed from Michigan. 'We learn things every day here at the museum that we didn't know,' he said. 'It's amazing how many people we should know about but don't.' He also reflected on the delayed enforcement of emancipation in Texas, where enslaved people remained unaware of their freedom long after the Emancipation Proclamation. Bayard said some slaveholders withheld the news for personal gain. 'Most of them, I assume, were greedy,' he said. 'They probably knew, but didn't feel obligated to tell their people.' List: Juneteenth events in West Michigan 2025 Bayard noted that General Order No. 3, delivered by Union General Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas, went further than the Emancipation Proclamation by declaring former slaves equal. 'That's not in the Emancipation Proclamation,' he said. Amid rising criticism of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, Bayard urged communities to protect Juneteenth's legacy by recognizing its broader significance. 'It's not just an African-American event,' he said. 'It's overwhelmingly an American thing.' He encouraged individuals to research, ask questions, and view Juneteenth as part of the nation's collective history. 'The answers are there. You just have to do a little digging,' Bayard said.
