Celebrity hair stylist Fabio Sementilli's wife found guilty in his 2017 stabbing death

Yahoo11-04-2025

A Los Angeles jury on Friday found the wife of celebrity hair stylist Fabio Sementilli guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in his 2017 stabbing death.
Sementilli, 49, was found with stab wounds to his neck, face and chest on the patio of his home in Woodland Hills, California, on Jan. 23, 2017.
Monica Sementilli's sentencing is scheduled for June 23.
A new "20/20" episode, "Sex, Knives, and Videotape", airing Friday, April 11, at 9 p.m. ET on ABC and streaming the next day on Hulu, examines the case.
You can also get more behind-the-scenes of each week's episode by listening to "20/20: The After Show" weekly series right on your 20/20 podcast feed on Mondays, hosted by "20/20" co-anchor Deborah Roberts.
Prosecutors said Monica Sementilli and her lover, Robert Baker, were having an affair and conspired to kill Fabio so the couple could be together and collect life insurance money.
As the pair awaited trial, Baker decided in 2023 to plead "no contest" to all charges relating to Fabio's murder, including the special circumstance allegations of murder for financial gain and murder while lying in wait.
Pleading no contest meant Baker did not contest the charges and accepted the facts alleged by prosecutors without admitting to being guilty. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

In October, another man -- Christopher Austin -- was arrested in connection with the case.
Testifying for the prosecution during Monica's trial in March, he told jurors that he and Baker stabbed Sementilli to death after she left the door of their home unlocked. When questioned by the defense, Austin denied that he had been offered a deal by prosecutors in exchange for his testimony.
Austin was convicted of second-degree murder and personal use of a knife in Sementelli's killing. He faces 16 years in prison when he's sentenced in April.
Friday's verdict may offer some degree of justice for the Sementilli family. In interviews prior to the jury's decision, they told "20/20" that they still feel his absence deeply. Sementelli's son Luigi, who is Monica's stepson said that he takes comfort from his father's Rolex watch.
"He wore this all the time. He wore it when he died," he told "20/20." "I wear it for special occasions when I wanna feel close to him. It's probably my most -- one of my most cherished--- possessions."
Sementelli's sister Mirella said she takes comfort in his memory.
"It's hard to dig deep for a silver lining here. No, it's -- his legacy will live on," she told "20/20." "We were blessed to have him, even for a short time."

The first 'Alien: Earth' trailer just landed — and it was more than worth the wait

Calling 'Alien: Earth' my most anticipated show of 2025 feels like an understatement. As a superfan of all things 'Alien' — it's not just my favorite film franchise but my favorite IP in all of media, period — I thought my hype levels for the upcoming FX show could not be higher, but the first "Alien: Earth" trailer has just made the wait until its premiere on August 12 almost painful. After months of teasing and a few short spots that showed very little beyond unsatisfying glimpses of the full beast to come, FX just dropped a full two and a half minute trailer, and it's truly glorious. The 'Alien' superfan in me was literally leaping out of my office chair with excitement several times. You can watch the trailer for yourself down below: Opening with a countdown interspersed with quick cuts from the trailer to come, the densely-packed first look does the one thing I was hoping it would: It focuses on the show's cast of characters rather than the Xenomorph. We learn of a young girl who is going to be 'the first person to transition from a human body to a synthetic." When has megacorporation playing God ever gone wrong in the 'Alien' universe? Next, we're introduced to the show's lead character, Wendy (Sydney Chandler), who appears to be said young girl now fully implanted into a synthetic body. Wendy volunteers to lead a group of soldiers to recover something hidden deep within a crashed spaceship, and no prizes for guessing what they're going to find on this vessel. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. The use of the series's now iconic musical cue, first introduced in 2012's 'Prometheus,' just adds to the overwhelming sense of dread. However, what has impressed me most about the trailer is the stunning production design. I did have a fear that in the transition from the big screen to the smaller one, some of the franchise's unique visual identity would be lost, but that appears to be an unnecessary concern. There's no denying that, based on this trailer, 'Alien: Earth' looks like ... well, 'Alien.' Smartly, the trailer is also extremely light on glimpses of the Xenomorph itself. The "Alien" series is always at its best when the headline monster is used sparingly, and I really hope this cards-to-the-chest approach is mirrored in the full series. Often, the threat that a tooth-tongued xeno is lurking in a dark corner is more impactful than a close-up encounter. If you've missed all the hype already surrounding 'Alien: Earth,' it's the first TV show set in the legendary sci-fi horror franchise, and comes from Noah Hawley, the creator of fellow FX series 'Fargo' and 'Legion.' Alongside Chandler, it'll feature Timothy Olyphant, Alex Lawther, Samuel Blenkin, Essie Davis, Adarsh Gourav and Kit Young. As noted, 'Alien: Earth' is set to premiere August 12 on FX and Hulu (or Disney Plus in the U.K.). Somebody get me a cryosleep pod, I can't wait that long. OK, so I've gone full fanboy above, but to add a cautious counterpoint, there is one aspect of the trailer that has me concerned. The hints of additional 'predatory' creatures beyond Xenomorph contained within the crashed spaceship have flared up my fears that this show will be a stealth setup for a new 'Alien vs. Predator' crossover. The inclusion of a Weyland-Yutani synthetic in the most recent trailer for the upcoming 'Predator: Badlands' adds more fuel to the fire. It's pretty hard to deny that all signs point to the 'Alien' and 'Predator' universes being smushed together once again. I don't hate the 'AVP' series — well, I don't hate the first 'AVP' movie; the sequel was hot garbage — it was my entry point into the 'Alien' franchise as a youth. A youth who was far too young to be watching such an R-rated flick. Nevertheless, I firmly believe that 'Alien' and 'Predator' are both better standalone, and I'd much rather the two weren't spliced together. Especially after the fantastic 'Alien: Romulus' (which I've now watched more than 10 times) got the series back on track in style, I'm just not convinced now is the time to try to make 'AVP' a thing again. However, like it or not, it certainly appears that is what's going to happen, in at least some form or another. Nevertheless, even my concerns about this potential crossover aren't enough to blunt my anticipation, and come August, I look forward to thoroughly annoying my friends (and a few colleagues) by literally never shutting up about 'Alien: Earth.' Here's hoping the final product thrills me as much as this trailer. Now I'm off to rewatch it frame-by-frame to find more clues.

Boulder attack suspect to appear in court as family remains in ICE detention

The suspect in the Boulder firebombing will appear in a Colorado court Thursday, as an attorney for his wife is calling for the family's release from Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention. Mohamed Sabry Soliman, a 45-year-old Egyptian national who entered the country legally in 2022, has a hearing in Boulder County court at 3:30 p.m. local time (5:30 p.m. ET) in connection with the antisemitic attack Sunday at the Pearl Street pedestrian mall. Soliman is accused of using a "makeshift flamethrower" and Molotov cocktails on a group of people peacefully calling for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza. The attack injured at least 15 people, ranging in age from 25 to 88, and one dog, prosecutors said in an update Wednesday. Soliman faces state charges of attempted first-degree murder after deliberation, attempted first-degree murder with extreme indifference, first-degree assault, including against an at-risk victim older than 70, and possession of an incendiary device. Separately, Soliman was charged Monday with a federal hate crime. The White House on Tuesday announced that Soliman's wife and five children had been taken into ICE custody "for expedited removal." Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem wrote on X that the department was investigating "to what extent" Soliman's family knew about the attack or supported it. A federal judge Wednesday issued an order preventing the deportation of the wife and children. They have not been charged in connection with the attack. Soliman entered the country on a B2 visa, typically issued to tourists, in August 2022. The following month, he filed for asylum with his family as dependents, according to the Department of Homeland Security and court documents. While his visa expired in February 2023, Soliman had not yet exhausted all legal options to stay in the U.S. An attorney for Soliman's wife, Hayam El Gamal, told NBC News that she and her children are at the Dilley family detention center in Texas. "There is no precedent in the history of the United States for the type of collective family-based punishment that the Trump administration is doling out on this family," the attorney, Eric Lee, said. 'It's extremely dangerous, and it's something that should concern every single person that's watching,' he added. "You can imagine the shock that they were in when they learned the charges that were being brought against their father or husband, and then suddenly to find themselves being whisked away in the dark of night, out of their home state of Colorado to a new place in a detention center, huddled together without really any idea about whether they were going to be sent to a country from which they had applied for the right to asylum," Lee continued. Lee said two of the five children are 4 years old, and the others are 8, 15 and 17. He said the government had mistakenly said that the oldest child is 18. He said he's sought habeas relief to protect the family from being removed, but hasn't had the opportunity to speak to them in depth, as calls were cut off twice after a few minutes on Wednesday. "One could only imagine what this family is going through," he said. "They've done absolutely nothing wrong." This article was originally published on
