Jake White: D-Day for Bulls to show how good they are in Leinster URC final

The Stara day ago

Ashfak Mohamed | Published 1 hour ago
Whatever has happened in the past won't count for much for the Bulls in Saturday's United Rugby Championship final against Leinster in Dublin.
That was the word from Bulls boss Jake White yesterday as he addressed the Irish media ahead of the title decider at Croke Park (6pm SA time kick-off).
The Pretoria side have come up short twice in the URC, losing the 2022 final to the Stormers in Cape Town, and then going down 21-16 to Glasgow at Loftus Versfeld last year.
But White doesn't feel that losing two previous finals will have any effect on this weekend's game against the Irish giants.
One could argue that Leinster are in a similar boat, having failed to clinch the URC crown since the South African teams joined the competition.
They lost in the Champions Cup semi-finals this season as well, so coach Leo Cullen and his team will also be hungry for silverware this weekend.
'To be fair, it's completely different teams, competitions, venues, different time of the year... People can look at it and say this team loses semis, this team loses finals. This team has a lot of Irish players... It's irrelevant, it doesn't matter,' White said after training in Dublin yesterday.
'It doesn't make any difference. I generally don't believe that any coach ever talks about what happened 20 years ago.
'This group of players have probably far exceeded expectations of anybody in the last four years.
'We've made three finals, and the average age of our team over the last four years has been the youngest of most teams in the competition.
'Many of the teams we play are laden with internationals, who play in front of big crowds and in big stadiums in pressure situations, which define players who are good enough.
'I'm not saying that we're not aware that we've had three finals, but we are also very aware that we have exceeded what everyone has expected, and we have probably batted above our weight for a long time.
'Hopefully this game will be the one where we will learn from the two other opportunities we had to win this competition.'
The Bulls actually have an excellent record against Leinster, having only lost once (in 2021) in five matches.
That includes two semi-finals – one each in Ireland and South Africa – as well as their most recent encounter in Pretoria, where the Bulls edged it 21-20 against an inexperienced Leinster outfit without most of their Test stars.
But with the URC trophy up for grabs in front of what is going to be a sizable crowd in excess of 40,000 fans in the 82,300-capacity Croke Park, the Bulls will need to count on experienced hands such as Willie le Roux, Marcell Coetzee, captain Ruan Nortjé and dynamite prop Wilco Louw to lead the way.
They certainly have the firepower to go toe-to-toe with Leinster, with Springboks such as Canan Moodie, Embrose Papier and Jan-Hendrik Wessels all in fine form at the moment, even though White confirmed that star No 8 Cameron Hanekom is out injured.
' You try and put people under pressure. And we're under pressure too. There's our third final, people will say,' White said.
'So, you know, the Bulls' argument (will) say, we lost one (last year's final) at home that people expected us to win. So, it depends which side of the coin you look at.
'But rugby is never going to change. We're going to have to put teams under pressure.
'If they start well, you're going to make sure you catch up. If you start well, they're going to make sure they catch up.
'They're a quality team, guys. I know you guys (Irish media) are harsh on them, and I read in between the lines.
'And yes, the expectation is... They're still a very, very well-coached team. And they're still a very, very... how can I put it to you? A team that's revered by the teams in the competition.
'And if you want to win the comp, I've said it from day one, when I saw them get a good start, five points, five points, five points...
'My message for the last four months, five months, is if you think you're good enough to beat Leinster away, then you've got to win all these games to get to the final, which we've now done.
'And now the question I'll ask them this week is, you've said you're good enough to beat Leinster away. Now, let's see how good we are.
'So, that's been coming for four months now.
'Our measure was, if you think you're good enough to beat Leinster, because it was inevitable this year that we're going to get first place, because no one was going to catch them.
'I think at one point, like 20 points ahead. It is now... It's sort of now D-Day.
'It's D-Day for us. It's an opportunity to say or do what we said we could do. Or believe we could do.'

Van Staden starts, Carr returns as Bulls tweak pack for URC final

The Vodacom Bulls have made one enforced change for Saturday's URC decider against Leinster at Croke Park in Dublin following Cameron Hanekom's semi-final injury. Director of rugby Jake White has promoted Marco van Staden into the starting back row alongside captain Ruan Nortje, with Marcell Coetzee shifting to No 8. Nizaam Carr takes Van Staden's place on the bench in the only alteration to the match 23 replacements. The tight five remains intact with Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Johan Grobbelaar and Wilco Louw forming the front row, while Cobus Wiese partners JF van Heerden at lock. Embrose Papier and Johan Goosen continue their half-back partnership, with the backline unchanged from last week's victory over the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld. Also read: We're playing for each other, and Cornal – Willie Sebastian de Klerk and Canan Moodie occupy the wings, Harold Vorster and David Kriel combine in midield, and Willie le Roux starts at fullback. White maintains his five-three bench split with Carr joining Akker van der Merwe, Alulutho Tshakweni, Mornay Smith and Jannes Kirsten as forward cover. Zak Burger, Keagan Johannes and Devon Williams provide backline options. The Bulls head to Croke Park aiming to turn a promising record against Leinster into URC silverware. White's men have beaten the Irish giants in two semi-finals – including a famous win in Dublin – and lead the head-to-head 4-2 going into their third Grand Final in four seasons. South Africa's most decorated professional rugby franchise, with three Super Rugby titles and 25 Currie Cups, the Bulls – who boast three Elite XV selections (Hanekom, Jan-Hendrik Wessels and Wilco Louw) in 2024/25 – look to end a run of two URC final defeats. BULLS – 15 Willie le Roux, 24 Canan Moodie, 13 David Kriel, 12 Harold Vorster, 11 Sebastian de Klerk, 10 Johan Goosen, 9 Embrose Papier, 8 Marcell Coetzee, 7 Ruan Nortje (c), 6 Marco van Staden, 5 JF van Heerden, 4 Cobus Wiese, 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Johan Grobbelaar, 1 Jan-Hendrik Wessels. Bench: 16 Akker van der Merwe, 17 Alulutho Tshakweni, 18 Mornay Smith, 19 Jannes Kirsten, 20 Nizaam Carr, 21 Zak Burger, 22 Keagan Johannes, 23 Devon Williams. Lorch, Mailula and Mokwana ready to hoist the SA flag at Fifa Club World Cup

Thembinkosi Lorch in action for Wydad Casablanca, where his stand-out performances in March earned him the Player of the Month award. Photo: Instagram/@WACofficiel Image: Instagram/@WACofficiel The FIFA Club World Cup is the ultimate tournament for interclub football as it is played by the best teams from across the world. South Africa will be well represented in the upcoming event in the US after Mamelodi Sundowns' qualification. However, there'll be other South African representatives from two other African giants, Wydad Casablanca and Esperance, who'll be competing at the event. Thembinkosi Lorch - Wydad Casablanca Lorch has grabbed the lifeline that was offered to him by Wydad with both hands as he's put his best foot forward since he arrived at the club last season. He was not able to help the team finish in the Top 2 on the log and qualify for the Champions League next season as they could only claim a Confederation Cup spot. Nevertheless, he had a memorable season, so much so that he was voted as the club's Player of the Month for March. Having been brought to the club by native coach Rulani Mokwena through a loan deal from Mameodi Sundowns, the duo showed great belief in each other. As such, when Mokwena was sacked towards the end of the season, the future and impressive outing of Lorch at the club remained unclear. But Lorch has taken Mokwena's departure in good faith, continuing to be at his best with his skill-set. And that's why it's been reported that Wydad wants to sign him permanently. Cassius Mailula - Wydad Casablanca When Mailula joined Major League Soccer (MLS) side Toronto two seasons ago, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos said that move wouldn't benefit his career. And that proved to be the case - Mailula was demoted from the first team and sent to train with the reserve side, which took him backwards. But when Mokwena signed him for Wydad at the start of the season, Mailula rediscovered his mojo, scoring five goals and registering seven assists in 33 games. His ability to bounce back to his old self, scoring goals and putting his skill-set to good use, has made him a fan-favourite among the Wydad supporters. As such, when he lost his mother recently, he received outpouring support from both the fans of the club and football fraternity at large. With his loan spell at Wydad coming to an end after the World Cup, the 24-year-old is highly expected to make his move permanent, especially given his recent exploits. Elias Mokwana - Esperance There are few players that come as speedy as Mokwana in continental football, and that's why he was able to be head and shoulders above most players in Tunisia. He made his mark, taking on markers, en route to winning a domestic treble with Esperance, including the championship after the end of the season. Mokwana had said before his move that he was keen to join childhood club Kaizer Chiefs, but the negotiations fell at the final hurdle. Mokwana cannot afford to sulk and moan around - he must wear his heart on his sleeve as long as he's still contracted to Esperance going forward. Esperance like the other three African representatives - Sundowns, Wydad and Al Ahly - in the US will be underdogs in America, but individual performances will not go unnoticed. Mokwana has to be at his best with every passing game and tournament as that'll aid his chances of being called-up for Bafana for the World Cup qualifiers and Afcon finals.

Percy Tau back on the market — Chiefs, Sundowns, Pirates all linked

Back on the market Bafana Bafana's Percy Tau is currently on the hunt for a new club after his contract with Qatar SC expired at the end of last season. Photo: BackpagePix. Image: Backpagepix South African football icon Percy Tau is on the move again, and a number of Betway Premiership clubs could soon battle it out for his signature. The 31-year-old former Mamelodi Sundowns forward is currently on the hunt for a new club after his contract with Qatar SC expired at the end of last season. Tau was heavily linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs before the last campaign kicked off, but he ultimately chose to move to the Middle East after his time with the Egyptian giants Al Ahly ended. Naturally, Chiefs have once again been mentioned as a possible destination. Speaking to Robert Marawa on MSW on Wednesday night, Tau said he was open to returning to the PSL, adding that he was willing to speak to as many potential suitors as possible. A possible return to Sundowns was also not off the table. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. Video Player is loading. 'It's a team that I played for and I've won trophies. I've got so much love for the team and the fans. 'So, it will have to take a good deal to agree. If Sundowns were not to offer me a contract and Chiefs do, then okay, it's not my fault… But I will listen to anybody. Let's not rule out Orlando Pirates, Stellenbosch, or SuperSport United. 'I will not rule out anyone, but then my decision will be based on who gives me a contract. 'Of course, Sundowns still have my love, but then it will be based on who offers me a contract, because at the end of the day I still have to support my family. I'm not going to take just any offer. ' Out of all the clubs mentioned, Chiefs are probably the ones who are more desperate for a player of Tau's ability and experience. At times last season, Nasreddine Nabi's men did well and wore teams down but were unable to completely kill them off, as they lacked experience — especially in the final third. Tau, who has won multiple titles throughout his career, including three CAF Champions League crowns, is a player who could give them the edge they currently lack.
