Government likely to clear new 3 air defence missile regiments for army
In order to boost India's air defence systems along the Pakistan border, the Ministry of Defence is expected to clear a deal for the procurement of three new regiments of the indigenous Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) systems for the Indian Army.Defence officials told India Today that the proposal will be reviewed during the upcoming meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council, scheduled around the fourth week of June.advertisementThe systems are intended for deployment along both the western and northern borders adjoining Pakistan.
The QRSAM, with a range of approximately 30 kilometres, is designed to complement existing short-to-medium-range air defence platforms such as the Akash and Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) systems currently in service. The decision comes in the wake of Operation Sindoor, during which Indian Army and Air Force air defence units successfully countered Pakistani aircraft, missiles, and drone incursions.During the four-day cross-border firing with Pakistan, the Indian Army's Air Defence units destroyed the majority of the drones using L-70 and Zu-23 air defence guns, along with the Akash, MRSAM, and the Indian Air Force's Spider and Sudarshan S-400 systems. The QRSAM system has undergone extensive trials and demonstrated effective performance in both day and night operational conditions. In addition to the proposed QRSAM acquisition, the Army Air Defence is also enhancing its capabilities with new radars, very short-range air defence systems, jammers, and laser-based technologies to counter aerial threats, including drones of Turkish and Chinese origin.Must Watch

Shipki-La near China border in Kinnaur opens for tourists
For the first time, Shipki-La, a high-altitude 3,930 metres motorable mountain pass bordering India and China in Himachal's tribal district of Kinnaur, has been opened for tourists who can now visit simply by carrying an Aadhar card and token. Chief minister (CM) Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday launched border tourism activities at Shipki-La. The move is aimed to boost the local economy and promote tourism in border areas in the hill state. Last month, officials said the state government had asked the ministry of defence to allow tourism activities in the border areas of the state in Lepcha, Shipki-La, Giu and Rani Kanda and the ministry has given go ahead in this regard. The border tourism initiative, launched in coordination with the Union government, will enable regulated tourist access to strategically important yet culturally vibrant locations such as Lepcha-La, Shipki-La, Gue Monastery, Khana, Dumti, the Rani area of Sangla, and Chitkul in Kinnaur district, along with selected areas in Lahaul-Spiti. Previously, access to these locations was heavily restricted, requiring special permissions from the ITBP and Indian Army due to their proximity to the India-China border and strategic importance. However, under revised guidelines, local residents and tourists can now visit these locations by presenting valid identity documents. The ITBP and army will continue to facilitate smooth and secure movement in alignment with prescribed protocols. CM Sukhu after launching the initiative said that at the border, we have eased restrictions for the travellers to enjoy the beauty of Shipki-La and the tourism activities here would strengthen the economy of the local people along with boosting tourism in the region. 'The state government had requested the defence ministry for permission for starting tourism activities in the border areas of Lepcha, Shipki-La, Giu and Rani Kanda. After the approval for the same, the border tourism initiative has been launched,' he said. Focus on opening Shipki-La route for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra The CM said that the state government would raise the issue of starting the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Shipki-La with the central government as well. He added: 'I would meet the Prime Minister and discuss the matter with him. Shipki-La will be the easiest route for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.' 'The centuries-old Trade route between India and Tibet, Shipki-La, was closed for trade in the year 2020. There are immense possibilities of trade and cultural exchange through this pass and the matter of restarting it would also be raised before the central government, said the chief minister. 'The matter of setting up an airport to promote tourism in the border areas would also be pursued before the Union government. The state government would urge the Centre to abolish the Inner Line Check Post of the military and paramilitary forces, which currently creates permit related obstacles for tourists,' Sukhu said. He said that he has also recently discussed the action plan to promote tourism in the border areas with Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). There has also been a discussion on using various helipads of the ITBP to promote tourism in remote areas. Discussions have also been held about providing medical facilities to the people through the health institutions of the ITBP.

BJP minority wing's chaupal in Shaheen Bagh to encourage women to join army gets tepid response
New Delhi: Inside a hall adorned with brightly coloured banners of BJP's minority wing at Shaheen Bagh on Tuesday, a chaupal was organised to encourage women to join the Indian Army. It was a stark contrast to the passionate protests that echoed through the lanes of Shaheen Bagh in 2020. Shaheen Bagh was the epicentre of the CAA-NRC protest in 2020. The chaupal drew a small gathering of mostly party workers. When the event started, five women were present, but after a few minutes, only two were left. Both women were associated with the party's minority wing. Speaking at the event, Jamil Siddiqui, national president of BJP's Minority Morcha, said the chaupal was organised after the successful completion of 11 years of tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "We are talking about govt schemes and achievements of the Prime Minister, highlighting how he elevated India's status globally and led the country to new heights of success. We are also encouraging our daughters to step out, pursue education, and join the workforce, including the military. " Giving the example of Col. Sofia Qureshi, who briefed the media during Operation Sindoor, Siddiqui said: "Sofia, a daughter of our society, showcased the strength of Indian women to the world, demonstrated female empowerment, and made a mark for her community, Islam, India, and Indian culture. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Capital Gains Exemptions for Seniors SmartAsset Learn More Undo We want our daughters to receive military training, join the army, become Agniveers, and, if necessary, fight enemies at the border like Colonel Sofia. They should be able to protect themselves from harassment and domestic violence." He added that with similar discussions, they aim to organise numerous gatherings across the country. When asked about the tepid response received to the chaupal, Siddiqui said: "We have invited only key party workers here. It is a type of training for them as we will discuss with them. Our representatives will then go around Delhi, visiting homes and holding meetings to inform people about govt schemes. We will encourage our daughters to step out, advance, and participate in education and employment." A copy of the Indian Constitution was also distributed among the participants. Outside the chaupal, women said they were unaware of the programme as there was no announcement or publicity about it. However, women added that Col Qureshi is an inspiring figure for them. Aeman Hayat Siddiqui, who aspires to become a teacher, said, "Col Qureshi is an inspiration. We want our daughters to make progress and make the country proud." She added, "I completed my education and am looking for a govt job. We want the govt to create more vacancies." Mariam, a NEET aspirant, said: "Col Sofia Qureshi's journey is motivating for everyone. I feel that women can achieve anything."
