LeBron James, the NBA's top scorer ever and a four-time champion, just revealed something surprising about his early development — he didn't have a personal basketball trainer until his second, third, or even fourth year in the NBA.
Instead, he grew up playing unstructured games—pickup games with friends, where he sharpened his skills through hands-on experience instead of formal training. This finding challenges the modern focus on early specialization and organized training in youth sports.
LeBron James Credits Pickup Games Over Trainers in Early Development
In a recent episode of his podcast "Mind The Game", LeBron James opened up about his unique journey to basketball success. He mentioned, "I didn't have a 'basketball trainer' until my second, third, maybe fourth year in the NBA.
My basketball training was just being on the court. Let's just go hoop. Five on five, two on two, three on three."
By using this approach, James was able to really understand the game through hands-on experiences. Engaging in various informal games helped him grow his dribbling, shot creation, and basketball IQ in a natural way. He noted that this technique encouraged creativity and adaptability, qualities that have defined his remarkable career.
LeBron James Warns Against Early Specialization in Youth Sports
Aside from his own experiences, James shared his worries about how youth sports are evolving. He pointed out the issue with kids specializing too early, dedicating themselves to just one sport all year long, usually with the help of personal trainers. James noted, "Me and my guys, we ran track and field as well. We played football all through high school. We didn't just do one thing all year round. I think a lot of kids, they burn the hell out.
"
He suggested that spending so much time on just one game could cause players to feel tired and lessen the fun they have. James believes that children should take part in different sports and enjoy playing games, instead of concentrating on hard training early on.

LeBron James recently explained how playing many different sports and not following a strict routine benefits people looking to become athletes. It demonstrates that a person doesn't always need serious training to achieve prominent success; passion, being imaginative and an ability to adjust during play is enough. As sports for youth develop, James wants us to concentrate on playing for enjoyment and general skills rather than specializing at an early stage.

OKC Thunder's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander turned emotional while reflecting on his NBA dream During a recent appearance on the widely watched show hosted by ESPN's Mallika Andrews, Oklahoma City Thunder's star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander not only spoke about the NBA team facing the Indiana Pacers in the finals but also went down memory lane while talking about his basketball dream. Mallika Andrews went on to ask 'This team has been really measured, particularly towards the beginning of the year. I remember asking questions about the goals of this team, and you all sort of shied away from this idea of our goal being to win a championship, and then that flipped for you. Were you always saying it out loud, and it was sort of like, I don't want to jinx our birthday wish by saying it to the world, or how did that work?' 'I've always thought and believed that to achieve things, you have to, like, say them out loud; you have to embrace them; you can't run from them; you can't hide from them, no matter how big the dreams are. I got cut from that grade nine team and was telling everyone I was going to the NBA, like, and obviously I looked crazy back then, but those people are probably like, "Wow, he's insane." Shai Gilgeous-Alexander via ESPN/ YouTube The Thunder's star further elaborated- "Even more insane today to look at me now, so like I always have, like I've never run from my dreams, I've never run from my goals, like I've always, like I used to have, like a notebook to write down all my goals. I've achieved a lot of them, and I like to think that that has a big part to do with it, like I embrace them, and I go after them, and I'm not scared of them. The finals between the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder has brought the NBA enthusiasts under one roof. The first game of the finals will be held on June 6, 2025, and will be hosted by Oklahoma City. Also Read:

Trump 2025 travel ban: Uncle Sam's new no-fly list just got bigger; this is what has been banned and barred

The move, which is a part of the POTUS' immigration crackdown launched earlier this year, is portrayed as a needed action to protect the country against "foreign terrorists" and other security threats. "We will not allow people to enter our country who wish to do us harm," Trump said in a video posted on X. He also added that the list could be revised and new countries could be added. Who has been banned from the United States and who has been barred? Find out below! These are: Burundi Cuba Laos Sierra Leone Togo Turkmenistan Venezuela Welcomed to the United States of America Image credits: Getty Images According to The Guardian, Trump's new travel ban contains a unique exemption. Players, staff or associated families with clubs participating in the 2025 Club World Cup, the 2026 Fifa World Cup or the 2028 Olympics could be exempted from the US travel ban. Section 4 of the order, outlines the exemption stating, "any athlete or member of an athletic team, including coaches, persons performing a necessary support role and immediate relatives, travelling for the World Cup, Olympics, or other major sporting event as determined by the secretary of the state" are not subject to the ban. The travel ban by the President is a reinstatement as earlier the Biden administration had repealed the ban on nationals from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen in 2021 calling it "a stain on our national conscience." Many countries such as Somalia and Venezuela have already responded to the travel ban. While the former pledged to work with the U.S. to address the security issues, the latter announced that living in the United States is a "big risk" and advised its citizens against being in the U.S.
