Traditional healer freed from charges of raping student

KOTA KINABALU (June 20): A foreigner, who claimed himself to be a traditional healer, was freed by a Sessions Court here from two charges of raping a university student.
In her reserved ruling, judge Marlina Ibrahim acquitted and discharged Ronie Apolinario, 52, without calling for his defence.
The court held that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against Ronie.
On the first charge, Ronie was alleged to have raped the victim, who was 19 years old at the time, at a rented room in Inanam on June 17, 2021.
On the second charge, he was accused of committing a similar offence on the same victim at a lodging at the City area on September 3, 2022.
Both charges were brought under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which provides for a sentence of up to 20 years' imprisonment and whipping, upon conviction.
The prosecution had called four witnesses to testify against Ronie since the trial began in October 2024 and concluded on December 9, 2024.
Defence counsel Azhier Farhan Arisin represented Ronie.

Man nabbed after high-speed chase, found with suspected drugs
BUTTERWORTH: A man was arrested following a high-speed chase in the Bagan Dalam area here last night, after he allegedly attempted to flee from policemen and obstructed civil servants in the performance of their duties. The incident, which happened at about 10pm yesterday, came to light after a video of the chase went viral on social media. Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abd Rahman said policemen from the motorcycle patrol unit of the district police headquarters had ordered a suspicious locally manufactured vehicle to stop three times using beacon lights and sirens. He said the driver, however, ignored the instructions and sped off. "The suspect was eventually apprehended in front of the Ampang Jajar Flats in Butterworth. "A body search revealed a transparent plastic packet believed to contain syabu. "A subsequent urine test revealed the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine," he said in a statement tonight. The suspect has been remanded for four days until June 23 for investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant, as well as Sections 12(2) and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Anuar said a background check also revealed that the suspect had three prior drug-related offences. He urged the public not to sensationalise the incident, warning that it could disrupt public order and interfere with the ongoing investigation. Man found shot dead in 4WD outside Klang motorcycle shop
