Mideast distractions won't shift US' long-term focus on China: analysts

The US will remain focused on containing China in the Indo-Pacific, despite short-term
deployment distractions caused by its direct involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict, according to analysts.
US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the American military had
'totally obliterated' three of Iran's nuclear sites , making Washington a direct participant in Israel's conflict with its long-time regional rival.
Before
the strikes , the United States had repositioned forces for the conflict, including shifting assets away from the Indo-Pacific.
Last week, the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz cancelled a planned port call in Vietnam to support the USS Carl Vinson carrier strike group in the Middle East.
The redeployment of the Nimitz is the fourth of its kind in the past year,
prompting caution from Taiwan, which relies heavily on the US military presence in the region to deter the People's Liberation Army.

Observers said that while the decision to strike Iran expanded US military engagement in Middle Eastern warfare, Washington had pledged repeatedly to keep the main focus of strategic resources on China.

Gulf states urge maximum restraint following US strikes on Iran

Gulf states, home to multiple US military bases, were on high alert on Sunday with their leaders calling on all parties to exercise maximum restraint following US strikes on Iran that raised the possibility of a wider conflict in the region. President Donald Trump said US forces 'obliterated' Iran's main nuclear sites with massive bunker-busting bombs in the early hours of Sunday, joining an Israeli assault in a significant new escalation. Gulf leaders including the United Arab Emirates' president, the Emir of Qatar and the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, who had all hosted Trump last month for a tour of the region, discussed the serious implications of the escalation for international and regional security, the UAE state news agency reported. Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporter, was on a high-security alert after the US strikes, two sources with knowledge of the matter told reporters on Sunday, while Bahrain urged motorists to avoid main roads. Kuwait, another key oil exporter, said its defence council would remain in permanent session, according to the state news agency on Sunday, and set up shelters in a ministries complex. Israelis relieved by US bombardment of Iran, united behind war

Israelis expressed relief and optimism on Sunday after US President Donald Trump ordered air strikes on Iran, ten days into a war that has widespread public support. Advertisement Despite daily nerve-shredding trips to bomb shelters and growing damage around the country, Israelis appeared united behind Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's move to attack Iran on June 13. Trump's decision to authorise overnight bombing raids on Iran's nuclear facilities has provided further reassurance after more than a week of sorties by the Israeli air force. 'The war with Iran was inevitable. You knew it would happen sooner or later,' Claudio Hazan, a 62-year-old software engineer, said in central Jerusalem on Sunday. 'I hope that it will shorten the war, because otherwise Israel by itself would not stop until they get that Fordo place bombed,' he explained, referring to the deeply buried Iranian nuclear site targeted by heavy US bombers overnight. Remove barriers to speed up Hong Kong's Northern Metropolis, Xia Baolong says

Beijing's point man on Hong Kong affairs has urged local authorities to speed up work on the Northern Metropolis megaproject by removing barriers while also safeguarding national security against the threat of 'soft resistance', according to the city's leader. Advertisement Seeing off Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office (HKMAO) director Xia Baolong at the border at the end of his five-day visit , Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said on Sunday that the city was told to take advantage of the stability and safety brought by the national security law's implementation five years ago by boosting development and the economy. Xia, whose inspection trip marked the fifth anniversary of the Beijing-imposed law, had set out the future directions of the city's development during the trip, Lee said. The city leader added that Xia had reaffirmed his support for the administration's work. Xia also praised the work of community care teams, who helped needy households, and encouraged them by composing a poem for the carers, Lee said. 'Director Xia reminded us to continue safeguarding national security,' Lee told reporters at the Shenzhen Bay crossing after Xia's departure. 'The risks still exist especially when the geopolitical situation is complex, and we should always stay vigilant against soft resistance.
