Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's Venice wedding in pictures and numbers

Euronews4 hours ago

The headline-grabbing Venice wedding of Amazon multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos to longtime partner Lauren Sánchez has been causing quite the storm.
Amid protests – the latest of which is a floating Bezos dummy in the canal (see below) – the couple are expected to tie the knot today on San Giorgio island, which is home to a monumental complex designed by 16th architect Andrea Palladio, and which features an iconic belltower that is a ficture of the Venetian skyline.
The stars have descended on the historic lagoon city and security has been bolstered for the event.
Bezos and Sánchez's nuptials have drawn protests by groups, who view it as a sign of the growing disparity between the haves and have-nots.
Here are some numbers and pictures of the Venice arrivals and protests:
231
231 billion dollars. That's the net worth of Jeff Bezos, according to recent data from Forbes, making him the fourth-wealthiest person in the world behind Elon Musk ($407.4 billion), Larry Ellison ($251.9 billion) and Mark Zuckerberg ($236.5 billion).
Bezos stepped down as CEO of Amazon in early 2021, citing the desire to devote more time to philanthropy and other projects, including The Washington Post and his rocket company, Blue Origin – which caused celebrity controversy earlier this year.
Bezos still has broad influence over Amazon as executive chair and the company's biggest shareholder.
7-10
Estimates suggest that the couple is said to be spending between $7million - $10 million for the three days in Venice.
200
That's number of guests for their wedding – a figure which includes A-listers like Oprah Winfrey, Kim Kardashian and Orlando Bloom (who is rumoured to have split with Katy Perry after a 9-year relationship). Queen Rania of Jordan, American football legend Tom Brady, Ivanka Trump and her family and Bill Gates are also in attendance.
Speaking of which...
90
That's the number of wedding-related private jets that are expected to land at Treviso and Venice airports.
2
This is the second time that both Bezos and Sánchez will be walking down the aisle.
Bezos, 61, was married to MacKenzie Bezos for 25 years until their divorce in April 2019. As part of the settlement, MacKenzie, who has taken her middle name Scott as her new surname, received 25% of Bezos' stake in Amazon. According to Forbes, she is worth a cool $30 billion - easily placing her in the world's top 100.
TV anchor Sánchez, 55, also divorced her first husband of 14 years, talent agent Patrick Whitesell, in 2019.
2,456
According to travel website Kayak, that's the euro price for the next available room at the Aman Venice, the hotel where the couple are believed to be staying during their three-day wedding extravaganza.
48,000
That's the approximate population of Venice's historic center, which is composed of over 100 islands connected by footbridges and traversed by its famed canals.
Many of them are far from thrilled by the arrival of Bezos and his guests. About a dozen Venetian organizations, including housing advocates, anti-cruise ship campaigners and university groups, have united to protest the multi-day event under the banner 'No Space For Bezos' - a play on words also referring to the bride's recent (and much mocked) space flight.
Protesters have staged small-scale protests, unfurling anti-Bezos banners on iconic Venetian sites. They were joined on Monday by Greenpeace and the British group 'Everyone Hates Elon,' which has smashed Teslas to protest Elon Musk, to unfurl a giant banner in St. Mark's Square protesting purported tax breaks for billionaires.
The banner read: 'IF YOU CAN RENT VENICE FOR YOUR WEDDING YOU CAN PAY MORE TAX.'
Critics cite Amazon's labour practices, ongoing tax disputes with European governments and Bezos' political associations as reasons for concern.
Oliviero Cassarà, a lead organizer and activist, said in a statement that 'No Space For Bezos' has zero issue with Americans or people getting married in Venice. However, Cassarà said: 'Bezos supported Trump economically and politically and is consequently co- responsible for this drift against us Italian and European citizens.'
Activists also argue that the Bezos wedding exemplifies broader failures in municipal governance, while residents complain it exemplifies the way their needs are disregarded in the era of mass tourism.
Earlier this week, protesters claimed an "enormous victory" after Bezos and his A-list wedding guests were forced to change the wedding location. Indeed, their actions have pressured organisers to change the lavish wedding venue from the Scuola Grande della Misericordia to the Arsenale - the famous complex of shipyards beyond Venice's congested centre, which is surrounded by fortified walls.
According to local press reports, the venue switch has been described as a necessary change because of security concerns, after the US joined the war between Israel and Iran – and with Ivanka Trump being on the guest list.

Anderson teases Dior collection blending literature, sport and Versailles glamour

Dior 's upcoming show is the most anticipated of Paris Men's Fashion Week, and for days, the brand's new creative director, Jonathan Anderson, has been dropping cryptic clues on social media, hinting at what his first collection might reveal. Like a digital Hansel and Gretel trail, the 40-year-old Northern Irish designer has been teasing fashion followers with glimpses of what awaits when the curtain rises on Friday. Even the show invitation — held in the 17th-century grandeur of Les Invalides — has gone viral. He began with Andy Warhol's photographs of the American socialite Lee Radziwill — the sister of Jackie Kennedy — and artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Both New Yorkers are "for me the epitome of style," he said. While the trail of posts started in the Big Apple, it seemed to be ending at the Palace of Versailles outside Paris, particularly in the cutesy hamlet Marie Antoinette had built in the grounds so she could play at being a peasant. There were also snaps of a gilt clock in the Queen's Bedchamber, a Dior ring set in one of the hamlet's apple trees, and a brilliantly witty measuring tape in the shape of a snail perched on a leaf. Tied in knots Anderson also posted two rather endearing videos of French football star Kylian Mbappé putting on a tie and trying — and failing — to knot a dickie bow. "It's not that bad, right?" the Real Madrid star and Dior ambassador asked, before laughing, "It is (that bad)?" Anderson — a lover of literature — also seems to have returned to his homeland for inspiration, with three new versions of the brand's Book Tote bags. The first has "Dracula" in blood-red letters in a nod to Dublin writer Bram Stoker, while the "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" bag pays homage to French novelist Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. The enigmatic invitation to the show — a porcelain plate adorned with three eggs — has already gone viral on social media. Anderson's arrival at Dior had been flagged for months after he turned around the rather stuffy Spanish label Loewe, which is also owned by the French luxury giant LVMH. Just weeks after he was named to head Dior Homme, he was also appointed creative director of Dior's women's collections and its haute couture. The last person to have such a free rein at the brand was its founder, Christian Dior. Tricky time With the luxury sector's once bumper profits plummeting, Anderson's appointment is an attempt to renew the fashion house after nine years under the Italian Maria Grazia Chiuri. Anderson, the son of former Irish rugby captain Willie Anderson, trained at the London School of Fashion after starting on the shop floor at a Dublin department store. His first big break was landing a job in Prada 's marketing department before launching his own brand, JW Anderson, in 2008. "I think he is one of the most gifted talents of his generation," said Alice Feillard, men's buyer at Galeries Lafayette, Europe's biggest department store group. "We saw what he achieved at Loewe — a really remarkable and brilliant body of work." "He is one of the most talented and undoubtedly prolific designers of recent years," Adrien Communier, fashion editor for GQ France, told AFP. "There is something childlike yet very intellectual" about his collections, he said, "very cheeky, very bold... and really intriguing." Feillard said bringing together Dior's three lines "makes sense. Dior Homme and Dior Femme are almost two different brands. I think now the real challenge for the brand is to establish a somewhat more coherent identity," she said.

Bezos, Sanchez to say 'I do' in troubled Venice

"This city seems impossible! It can't exist... and yet, here it is!" an enchanted Bezos told a Repubblica journalist Thursday who had got close to the magnate as he whizzed around the canals by boat. Here it is, say the protesters, but for how long? While the billionaires party, activists say the fragile city is sinking, overrun by tourists, a victim of depopulation as locals unable to pay soaring rents are forced out. "No Kings, No Bezos" read a sign in green neon projected on St Mark's Campanile Thursday night. Serenaded Bezos and former news anchor and entertainment reporter Sanchez have been celebrating their nuptials with guests including Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Oprah Winfrey and Orlando Bloom. The tech magnate, 61, and Sanchez, 55, are staying at the Aman hotel, a luxury 16th-century palazzo on the Grand Canal with a view of the Rialto bridge. They will exchange vows at a black-tie ceremony on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore later Friday, according to Italian media reports. The wedding is expected to take place in a vast open-air amphitheatre on the island, which sits across from St Mark's Square. The newlyweds will then be serenaded by Matteo Bocelli, the son of famed opera singer Andrea Bocelli, the reports said. Michelin-starred chef Fabrizio Mellino will be preparing the wedding dinner, while the cake has been made by French pasty chef Cedric Grolet, the Corriere della Sera said. Sanchez is alleged to have prepared 27 outfits to wear during the festivities. Italian designer Domenico Dolce -- half of the duo Dolce & Gabbana -- was seen leaving the Aman hotel on Thursday, possibly following a fitting. 'Enchanted' Wedding guests snapped by paparazzi as they hopped into boats included Jordan's Queen Rania, US football player Tom Brady, American fashion designer Spencer Antle, singer Usher, and Ivanka Trump -- the daughter of US President Donald Trump. The guests reportedly lunched together Thursday in the gardens of Villa Baslini, on the islet of San Giovanni Evangelista. The celebrations are set to end Saturday with a party likely at the Arsenale, a vast shipyard complex dating back to when the city was a naval powerhouse. Bezos and Sanchez are donating three million euros ($3.5 million) to the city, according to Veneto's regional president Luca Zaia, and are employing historic Venetian artisans. Venice's oldest pastry maker Rosa Salva is baking 19th-century "fishermen's biscuits" for party bags which will also contain something by Laguna B, renowned for its handblown Murano glass. Trump and her family visited a glass-blowing workshop on the small island of Murano on Wednesday, according to the owner. "They were amazed and enchanted by the magic of glass," Massimiliano Schiavon told the Corriere della Sera, adding that the family had had a go at blowing their own. Venice, home to the oldest film festival in the world, is used to VIPs whizzing around in speed boats, and happily hosted the star-studded nuptials of Hollywood actor George Clooney in 2014. Some locals say this wedding too brings good business, but critics say Bezos -- one of the world's richest men and founder of a company regularly scrutinised for how it treats its workers -- is different. And environmental activists have also pointed to the carbon footprint of the mega yachts and dozens of private jets -- at least 95 -- bringing the rich and famous to the canal city. Italy's health ministry has issued a red heat alert for Venice for the weekend, part of a heatwave affecting much of southern Europe.
