Wang beats Calderano to avenge World Cup loss, Sun makes it double gold for China
China swept the singles titles at the ITT World Table Tennis Championships again, with Wang Chuqin securing a dominant 4-1 victory over Hugo Calderano in the men's final and Sun Yingsha retaining the women's crown on Sunday.
World No 1 Sun overcame a stubborn challenge from compatriot Wang Manyu, outwitting the world No 2 in a thrilling final to clinch gold with a 4-3 victory in Doha.
Former champion Manyu, who beat Sun in the 2021 final, fought back from two games down and saved four championship points to take the contest down to the wire.
'We have played each other many times since childhood. So every time we meet in the finals, it would be a tough match,' Sun said.
The 24-year-old started well, winning the first two games 11-6 12-10. Manyu bounced back to dominate the next two games, and was a point away from winning the fifth but Sun saved the game point and took it 12-10.

Sun quickly took a 10-6 lead in the sixth game, putting her a point away from winning the championship, but Manyu held her nerve to win the next three points.

As dragon boating grows around the world, friendship is driving sport's boom
Countries across the world are building competitive dragon boat teams capable of challenging those from China, but the biggest win comes from the friends and communities built along the way, international athletes and officials in Hong Kong said on Saturday. Advertisement The Sun Life Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races take place in the city this weekend, and more than 4,500 athletes from 190 teams across Hong Kong, mainland China, Europe, Asia and America will compete in a total of 80 races over two days. The international championships started on Saturday, with the action taking place in Victoria Harbour, next to Tsim Sha Tsui East Promenade. 'I want to make everybody [race dragon boats] too, it's becoming more popular, more popular in Asia and in Africa bigger and bigger,' Ehab Gouda, team manager of the Dragon Boat African Alliance, said. The 51-year-old Egyptian, who works in import and export, started dragon boat racing in 2014 in Guangzhou and Hong Kong. He established a team in Egypt two years later, before joining the International Dragon Boat Federation. More than 4,500 athletes from 190 teams will compete in 80 races this weekend. Jimmy Ting hoping for another day in Paradise at Sha Tin

Photo: Kenneth Chan Jimmy Ting Koon-ho is hoping a better draw and some further improvement will give Little Paradise every chance of remaining undefeated in the Class Three Tin Wan Handicap (1,200m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. Successful in both career starts, Little Paradise clung on by a head after leading throughout from gate 13 on debut in March, before showing his versatility by storming home from behind midfield to salute by a length and three-quarters after jumping from gate 10 last month. Luke Ferraris was in the saddle for both of those triumphs and the South African jockey will be thrilled with the options barrier five gives him aboard Little Paradise this weekend. Photo: Kenneth Chan Two months after humbling Romantic Warrior in the Group One Dubai Turf (1,800m), Soul Rush headlines the 75th running of the Group One Yasuda Kinen (1,600m) at Tokyo Racecourse on Sunday, contesting the prestigious contest for the fourth time. Third behind Romantic Warrior in last year's Yasuda Kinen, Soul Rush has posted two wins, two seconds and a third from his past five races and looks like he is improving with age. The seven-year-old son of Rulership will be ridden by Suguru Hamanaka. The 36-year-old jockey breezed the horse over 1,200m on May 29 in a time of 1 minute 21.5 seconds with a final 200m of 10.5 seconds. On June 4, under a trainer's assistant, Soul Rush worked solo up the Ritto hill course over 800m, switching gears to extend powerfully over the final 200m. His overall time over the slightly heavy going was 52.3 seconds with a final 200m of 11.8 seconds. 'He was pretty much ready last week,' trainer Yasutoshi Ikee said.
