The whisky deals we're raising a glass to this Christmas

Independent05-12-2024

You don't have to spend hundreds to find a discount on a great bottle of Scotland's finest. Some of the best single malts are on offer during December, meaning you can raise a toast for less this Christmas.
To find the best whisky deals in the UK, you need to look no further than Scotland's most renowned distilleries. Many big whisky brands produce exceptional-tasting single malts costing less than £30, even before the discounts kick in.
Scottish law dictates that all single-malts, even cheaper ones, must have been matured for at least three years, been produced by a single distillery, and made using just one type of malted grain. That ensures you're getting a quality dram at a discount price, and not something better suited to cleaning ovens.
Keep reading for the best whisky deals in the December sales.
A legendary bottle from a beloved Islay distillery, Lagavulin 16 is going for less thanks to Amazon. The 16-year-old scotch is highly regarded for its intense and complex flavours, and collects whisky awards every time a bottle is opened with 100 metres of a judging panel. Perfect as a gift for the whisky fan in your life, or for popping into your own drinks cabinet.
An easy-drinking single malt from Dalwhinnie, Scotland's highest distillery, this 15-year-old scotch is renowned for its good value and its gentle, aromatic profile. Notes of fruit and toffee make this a great whisky for those who think they don't like whisky, while the discount makes this a great whisky for those who love a good deal.
The Singleton 12 bills itself as a smooth and buttery single malt that's an ideal entry point for newbies who might not consider themselves huge whisky fans. Unusually for a single malt, The Singleton is recommended for mixing with soda, unlocking the potential for sophisticated whisky highballs at your next party.
Talisker Skye single malt is one of two no-age statement bottles the distillery produces, the other being Talisker Storm. As you might expect, bottles hide their age when they haven't been aged long, but fierce competition has only led to great-tasting young single malts like Skye. The brand says to expect maritime sweetness and an oak-cask finish. Plus, you'll save £20 with this discount.
From a no-age bottle to one that proudly wears its youth on its label, Lagavulin 8 was added to the distillery's permanent range following the success of its limited edition run in 2016. Amazon is rarely the place to spot the very best whisky deals – usually just about managing to price match your local supermarket shelves – but this is a great price on a well-reviewed bottle. The Islay whisky has a pale barley colour and is touted as having woody, peppery and nutty flavours.

Spending review needs to prioritise growth, Finance Secretary says

Finance Secretary Shona Robison has called on the Chancellor to 'prioritise growth' and to fully fund the employer national insurance increase for Scotland's public services ahead of the UK spending review next week. Robison urged the UK Government to abandon some of its 'damaging policies' such as cuts to welfare support for disabled people, to scrap the two-child benefit cap and to reinstate a universal winter fuel payment, ahead of the review on June 11. She said the Scottish Government had not yet been provided with 'clarity' on spending priorities. She asked Chancellor Rachel Reeves to award funding for the Acorn carbon capture project and to ensure Scotland receives a share of GB Energy funding that matches its contribution to UK clean energy goals. Robison said: 'The UK spending review is an opportunity for the UK Government to abandon some of its damaging policies such as cuts to welfare support for disabled people, to scrap the two-child benefit cap and to reinstate a universal winter fuel payment. 'We are also aware of the huge impact of the increase in employer's national insurance, not least on public services. I hope UK ministers will use the spending review to fully-fund the costs of this tax hike on jobs to vital public services like the NHS. 'The UK Government should also use the spending review to empower the devolved administrations with more flexible fiscal rules that can enable investment in public services. 'We need an end to spending that bypasses devolution so we can direct funds to best meet local needs. 'We called on UK ministers to involve us at an early stage of this process, but since they've refused to provide us with any clarity on their spending priorities it's clear that its business as usual for Westminster. 'We continue to call on the Treasury to use the spending review to change course, providing the funding we need to deliver for the people of Scotland.' The Chancellor said in a speech on Wednesday: 'In a week's time, I will set out a spending review targeted squarely on the renewal of Britain. 'Focused on the priorities of working people. By investing in our security, in our health, and in our economic growth. 'To deliver on the promise of change to make you and your family better off.' Gordon Dewar also highlighted the importance of the jobs provided by the airport and other employers on the 'campus', in an exclusive interview with The Herald. He observed this employment totalled nearly 8,000, including around 1,000 people employed directly by the airport. And Mr Dewar declared: 'It is obvious that airports are profoundly important for local economies, particularly island economies such as ours. I am a geographer by background. I am a transport operator my whole career.' He also underlined the attractiveness of Edinburgh as a destination for overseas visitors. And he flagged the lift Edinburgh Airport provided to the tourism sector, and vice-versa. Debenhams sells a similar light to Amazon's gold version, the Geoco modern chandelier is reduced to £35.46. Those who've bought the Dunelm one for their home are showering it with compliments for its glitzy appeal. A thrilled customer said: "Absolutely love this light. Throws out so much light. Wanted a small light fitting and this fit the bill perfectly." Another shopper said: "Arrived very well packed and once up looks stunning. Bulbs are ordered separately and are nice and bright. Really pleased with this pretty item." One customer did say it wasn't the size they thought it would be: "Modern twist on a classic style. A very dainty, pretty light fitting. Smaller than I thought, but I've kept it as I love it so much.", reports the Liverpool Echo. "Absolutely stunning they look more expensive than they are, nice and bright I brought two of these for hallway." However, a common point of contention among reviews is the unexpected compact size of the light, hence buyers should pay heed to the given dimensions.
