Dropped catches, middle-order failures cost India Test

Leeds, June 24 (UNI) India captain Shubman Gill today termed the Headingley Test a 'brilliant contest' despite his side suffering a five-wicket defeat to England, citing dropped catches, lower-order batting failures, and missed opportunities as key factors behind the loss.
Reflecting on the result, Gill admitted that India had their moments. 'We had our chances, we dropped catches and our lower-order didn't contribute enough,' he said after the match. 'But I'm proud of the team – overall a good effort.'
India had contemplated setting England a target of around 430 and declaring earlier, but faltered towards the end of their second innings. 'Yesterday we were thinking around 430 odd and declare. Unfortunately, we didn't score runs at the end, which always makes it difficult,' he added.
On England's chase of 371 – their fifth successful 300-plus fourth-innings pursuit at Headingley – Gill acknowledged the momentum shift. 'It happened so quickly. Could be one of those things we have to rectify in the upcoming matches. Definitely, chances don't come easy on wickets like these.'
He praised the Indian bowling effort early on Day 5, noting how the conditions changed after the ball softened. 'The first session we were quite spot on, didn't give away many runs. It's hard to stop the runs once the ball softens. Unfortunately, some edges didn't go our way. They took their chances after the ball got old. That happens in a game of cricket.'
Gill reiterated the learning curve for a relatively young Indian squad. 'It's a young team, learning one, and hopefully we will be able to improve on those aspects,' he said.
Asked about pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah's involvement in future Tests, the skipper clarified that decisions on his participation are being taken match by match. 'It's definitely more game by game. Once we are close to the match, we will see.'

Aarit Kapil, 9-year-old chess prodigy from India, almost defeats Magnus Carlsen; shocks World No. 1 with draw

Indian chess has been growing exponentially, with three GMs within the top category of the current live rankings. Arjun Erigaisi is the current World No. 4, followed by reigning world champion D Gukesh in fifth position and R Praggnanandhaa in seventh place. Now a nine-year-old Indian chess player has been put under the spotlight. Aarit Kapil was also reportedly playing the game from a hotel room in Georgia. Aarit Kapil from Delhi recently came close to defeating current World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in an online chess game. It was part of an event called 'Early Titled Tuesday', which was hosted on He put the Norwegian in a tight situation in their blitz clash and was in a winning position at one point. But then with only a few seconds left on his clock, the chess prodigy failed to convert his advantage and the game ended in a draw. Aarit was also reportedly playing the game from a hotel room in Georgia, where is participating in the U-10 World Chess C'ship. He won both his games in the firsy two rounds of the tournament. Recently, Carlsen broke his silence when asked about a probable successor. He simply said, 'There is no one. There is no one at the moment. That's the honest answer. There could be, but at the moment, it's not likely.' 'At the moment, I still think that the older guys are better. Every single one of them (kids) has very, very clear flaws in their games.' Passing his verdict on Gukesh, he remarked, 'I think Gukesh showed in this tournament that he is on track, he is doing fantastic, but he's maybe not way ahead of track as we may have thought.' 'I think he is kind of little bit where I was, 2008, 2009ish, where he can do extremely well, but you can still see that there are that great results that come not only with the quality of positional play, it's a lot of fighting qualities. That is what kids are supposed to do, you are not supposed to master everything at that age. As for the others, yes, they are good but the likelihood of one of them becoming like a very clear number one, I don't see it very clearly at the moment,' he added.

Public tickets sold out for India vs Australia Sydney ODI and Canberra T20I to be played in November

Two international games set to be played in November between India and Australia in Sydney (a ODI) and Canberra (a T20 game) have already been sold out. Such has been the craze, especially from the Indian diaspora, that the white-ball series to be played in Australia has sold 90,000 tickets for eight matches, just two weeks after ticket-sale window was opened. According to Cricket Australia, more than 16% of the tickets sold so far have been purchased by Indian fan clubs. Bharat Army, a fan club, has purchased over 2,400 tickets, CA reported. Another group called 'Fans India' has lapped up more than 1,400 tickets. Interestingly, according to the CA press release, Amit Goyal from 'Brissy Baniyas' has purchased '880 tickets for the Gabba T20I, becoming the highest individual buyer for a single match', the statement said. Individuals are allowed to buy multiple tickets in Australia. Koel Morrison, Executive General Manager Events & Operations Cricket Australia: 'Exhausting our public ticket allocation for the SCG ODI and Manuka Oval T20I four months prior to the series is a testament to the tremendous interest for the upcoming season amongst cricket fans.' Earlier this month, CA's new CEO Todd Greenberg had talked about the importance of India games for the cricket board. During Covid pandemic in 2020, it was reported that Cricket Australia had to take a loan of A$300 million from Commonwealth Bank. The Indian series in 2021 helped the Australian board. And in October last year, they announced a deficit of A$31.9 million ($21.34m). The last 2024-25 series against India in Australia further boosted the finances of the CA. Greenberg acknowledged India's role. 'India are a very important partner, and I get a sense that, and it was before my time, but, you know, those efforts through COVID create relationships between our two countries, between the leadership of our countries to make sure that we are playing each other regularly both here and abroad. When our team tour is India, we know the numbers in their broadcast markets are enormous as well. So they're a very important partner of ours.' Tapping the large Indian and Asian-origin fans who live in Australia is one thing, but what about providing the pathway for young Asian-origin kids to play for Australia. Is Australia open enough to do that? 'I agree we've still got a lot of work to do, and, we would like to be attracting more of those communities to be playing cricket, but part of that challenge is on us in how we offer participation. I think our participation offerings in this country are very traditional, and they have historically been offered in the same way to the same types of people over generations. And if we're going to attract a new generation of participants, then we need to do things differently. We need to think differently. We need to communicate differently, and we need to make sure that the clubs and our environments are both safe and welcoming and inclusive,' Greenberg had said.

The appointment was made official under the International Medal Winner Direct Recruitment Rules 2022 which honours athletes who have achieved exceptional feats for the country. Such athletes are awarded positions in government services. Meanwhile, Rinku Singh and Samajwadi Party MP Priya Saroj's wedding, which was scheduled to take place on November 19, has now been reportedly postponed. The couple got engaged in a grand ceremony in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow, earlier this month, where many big faces were in attendance. Some notable guests included the likes of SP president and former UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, actress Jaya Bachchan, and even Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The couple also shared multiple pictures from ceremony on their social media handles. According to a report by Amar Ujala newspaper, the wedding between Rinku and Priya has been postponed due to the former's cricket commitments in November. The newspaper cited the family members of couple as the source and stated that the wedding will now take place in February 2026 and the exact date will be revealed soon. "The family had booked Taj Hotel, Varanasi for Rinku and Priya's wedding on November 19, 2025. However, Rinku's commitments for the Indian cricket team forced them to postpone the wedding," stated the report. "The hotel has now been booked for February end but the exact date is not confirmed yet," stated further.
