Dropped catches, middle-order failures cost India Test
Leeds, June 24 (UNI) India captain Shubman Gill today termed the Headingley Test a 'brilliant contest' despite his side suffering a five-wicket defeat to England, citing dropped catches, lower-order batting failures, and missed opportunities as key factors behind the loss.
Reflecting on the result, Gill admitted that India had their moments. 'We had our chances, we dropped catches and our lower-order didn't contribute enough,' he said after the match. 'But I'm proud of the team – overall a good effort.'
India had contemplated setting England a target of around 430 and declaring earlier, but faltered towards the end of their second innings. 'Yesterday we were thinking around 430 odd and declare. Unfortunately, we didn't score runs at the end, which always makes it difficult,' he added.
On England's chase of 371 – their fifth successful 300-plus fourth-innings pursuit at Headingley – Gill acknowledged the momentum shift. 'It happened so quickly. Could be one of those things we have to rectify in the upcoming matches. Definitely, chances don't come easy on wickets like these.'
He praised the Indian bowling effort early on Day 5, noting how the conditions changed after the ball softened. 'The first session we were quite spot on, didn't give away many runs. It's hard to stop the runs once the ball softens. Unfortunately, some edges didn't go our way. They took their chances after the ball got old. That happens in a game of cricket.'
Gill reiterated the learning curve for a relatively young Indian squad. 'It's a young team, learning one, and hopefully we will be able to improve on those aspects,' he said.
Asked about pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah's involvement in future Tests, the skipper clarified that decisions on his participation are being taken match by match. 'It's definitely more game by game. Once we are close to the match, we will see.'

Public tickets sold out for India vs Australia Sydney ODI and Canberra T20I to be played in November
Two international games set to be played in November between India and Australia in Sydney (a ODI) and Canberra (a T20 game) have already been sold out. Such has been the craze, especially from the Indian diaspora, that the white-ball series to be played in Australia has sold 90,000 tickets for eight matches, just two weeks after ticket-sale window was opened. According to Cricket Australia, more than 16% of the tickets sold so far have been purchased by Indian fan clubs. Bharat Army, a fan club, has purchased over 2,400 tickets, CA reported. Another group called 'Fans India' has lapped up more than 1,400 tickets. Interestingly, according to the CA press release, Amit Goyal from 'Brissy Baniyas' has purchased '880 tickets for the Gabba T20I, becoming the highest individual buyer for a single match', the statement said. Individuals are allowed to buy multiple tickets in Australia. When our team tour is India, we know the numbers in their broadcast markets are enormous as well. So they're a very important partner of ours.' Tapping the large Indian and Asian-origin fans who live in Australia is one thing, but what about providing the pathway for young Asian-origin kids to play for Australia. Is Australia open enough to do that? 'I agree we've still got a lot of work to do, and, we would like to be attracting more of those communities to be playing cricket, but part of that challenge is on us in how we offer participation. I think our participation offerings in this country are very traditional, and they have historically been offered in the same way to the same types of people over generations. And if we're going to attract a new generation of participants, then we need to do things differently. We need to think differently.
