Bus escapes crash as driver suffers heart attack
An accident was averted when a Speedo Bus veered off the road after its driver suffered a heart attack on Monday.
The bus, en route from Lodhran to Bahawalpur, lost control and crashed into a WAPDA pole before coming to a halt in nearby fields. All passengers remained unharmed.
The driver, Faiz Ahmed, a resident of Basti Kaneer Gilley Wala, suddenly suffered a heart attack while driving.
As a result, the bus, carrying around 40 to 50 passengers, went off the road.
Local residents rushed to the scene and transported the unconscious driver to DHQ Hospital, Lodhran, for emergency treatment.
Meanwhile, all passengers on board remained safe, escaping the incident without any injuries.
Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner Iram Shehzadi led an operation against illegal encroachments along Bahawalpur-Multan Road.
Accompanied by municipal committee staff, she oversaw the removal of unauthorized structures and sealed multiple shops, including bakeries and medical stores, for violating regulations.
Speaking on the occasion, Assistant Commissioner Iram Shehzadi stated that the Punjab government is committed to swiftly eliminating illegal encroachments across the district. She emphasized that actions are being taken indiscriminately against all violators.
"We had issued prior notices instructing shopkeepers not to place goods outside their shops, but they continued to do so, even placing generators and food stalls on public pathways.
Therefore, strict action was necessary," she explained.
Following the Punjab government's directives, all illegal encroachments in main markets and major roads will be cleared.
The Assistant Commissioner further warned that those continuing to violate regulations will face heavy fines.
In response to the crackdown, local traders staged a protest, shutting down their shops in defiance of the administration's actions.
However, after negotiations with Lodhran deputy commissioner, the sealed shops were reopened upon payment of fines amounting to Rs30,000 per shop.

PFA launches crackdown ahead of Eid
LAHORE: An enforcement team of the Punjab Food Authority on Friday carried out a grand operation against the adulteration mafia in the Karol Ghati area and seized a large quantity of counterfeit cold drinks. The food safety teams discarded 180 litres of fake cold drinks and confiscated prohibited substances being used to manufacture spurious beverages. An FIR has been lodged against the unit. Director General Asim Javaid said that the food safety team recovered 3,900 ready-to-sell fake cold drink bottles, 250kg sweetener, 4,000 empty bottles, 60kg bottle caps, 200kg labels, chemicals, filling machines, gas cylinders, and drums. In a separate action, the teams inspected 14 food points near Multan Road, Daewoo and Jinnah Terminals. Three food outlets were fined a total of Rs245,000 for violations of food safety regulations. The DG said that banned and hazardous chemicals were being used to replicate well-known cold drink brands. All stock prepared for Eid supply was destroyed. He added that the violators failed to produce valid medical and training certificates for workers, while the premises were found unhygienic and insect-infested. He warned that consumption of fake beverages could cause severe stomach, liver, and kidney issues. He said the PFA has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against hazardous and substandard food products. Complete ban on four-seater rickshaws enforced
KARACHI; A meeting was held under the chairmanship of Sindh Minister for Law and Home, Zia Ul Hassan Lanjar, to discuss amendments to the Motor Vehicles Rules. The session featured comprehensive discussions, consultations, and proposals, resulting in effective and practical decisions. Key decisions included mandatory fitness certification for both commercial and non-commercial vehicles, outsourcing vehicle fitness evaluations to third parties, and a ban on the sale of tinted windows, fancy lights, and sirens either online or at shops. The meeting was briefed separately by the Secretary of Law, Secretary of Transport, and DIG Traffic Karachi on necessary amendments to the Motor Vehicles Rules, enforcement of traffic regulations, and other essential matters. During the meeting, participants unanimously approved legal amendments to enforce a complete ban on four-seater rickshaws, and to make it mandatory for water tankers and dumpers to install trackers and sensors. It was resolved that a comprehensive draft would be prepared and submitted to the government of Sindh for approval and ratification. On the occasion, Lanjar stated that services of third parties will be engaged for issuing fitness certificates to commercial and non-commercial vehicles and formal Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) will be signed with them in compliance with all applicable regulations. He added that to reduce traffic congestion, accidents, and rule violations, only 1x2 seater rickshaws will be allowed on the roads. The meeting approved strict fines, including Rs200,000 for wrong-way driving by government vehicles, Rs25,000 for motorcyclists driving against traffic, Rs100,000 for four-wheelers violating one-way rules, Rs25,000 for motorcyclists and Rs50,000 for car drivers without a driving license, Rs100,000 for first-time offences of one-wheeling or drifting, increasing to Rs 200,000 and Rs300,000 for repeat offences. Lanjar also approved the mandatory installation of at least five cameras in heavy/ load-carrying vehicles. Additionally, e-challans for traffic violations will be delivered to vehicle owners' registered home addresses. Vehicles with unpaid fines will not be allowed to be sold or transferred. He further stated that the traffic, transport, and excise systems will now be interlinked and operated online. He also announced that a dedicated Traffic Magistrate will be appointed to handle traffic law violation cases. On the occasion, Excise Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawala assured full support from the Excise Department in enforcing traffic regulations and emphasised that no registration or route permits will be issued for four-seater or larger rickshaws (Chingchi), and a crackdown will be launched on any such vehicles found running on the roads. He said that all organisational steps to establish the vehicle fitness service structure will be completed promptly, after which strict enforcement of fitness requirements will follow. Second suspect in Hafizabad gang-rape incident killed
The gang-rape case has taken another turn as a second suspect, identified as Laeeq, was killed in an alleged police encounter near Kot Nanak village on Friday. Meanwhile, two police officials have been arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe to facilitate Laeeq's earlier release from custody. Police sources said the officers from Kassoki police station were on routine patrol when their vehicle came under fire from three to four armed men near Kot Nanak. Police returned fire in self-defence. During the exchange, one assailant was fatally shot — reportedly by gunfire from his own accomplices, who managed to flee. The deceased was later identified as Laeeq, one of the suspects in the gang-rape of a woman in front of her husband. Laeeq's body was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital for autopsy, and police have registered a case against the unidentified attackers for assaulting law enforcement personnel. This development follows the death of another accused, Khawar, in a similar encounter just a day earlier. Despite these operations, two main suspects — Ikram Mangat and Chand Mangat — remain at large. Legal Inspector Muneeb Mangat, posted at the District Police Officer (DPO) office, and Kashif Warraich, in charge of the Hameed Pura police check post, have been charged with accepting a bribe of Rs140,000 in exchange for facilitating Laeeq's escape from legal custody.
