NDMC renews bid to pick agency for smart parking managment across 155 facilities

Time of Indiaa day ago

New Delhi:
New Delhi Municipal Council
(NDMC) has initiated a fresh bid to select a specialised agency for implementing a
smart parking management
system across its 155 surface and multi-level
parking facilities
. Currently, two organisations have shown interest, and their technical capabilities are being evaluated before a final decision is made, said officials.
Previous attempts over the past five years to engage a firm for managing the initial 40 parking sites — and additional ones added later — have failed. In the absence of a dedicated agency, NDMC has relied on staff from its sanitation, electrical, and engineering departments to operate parking facilities. This ad hoc arrangement has led to operational inefficiencies and difficulties for visitors trying to find available spaces, contributing to financial losses.
'After evaluating the technical proposals, we will examine financial viability. If no suitable bidder is found, we may call for a fresh tender or take a final decision on awarding the contract to an agency,' an NDMC official said, adding that clarity is expected by mid-June.
The selected agency will be responsible for the design, development, implementation, operation, and maintenance of an '
intelligent integrated parking system
' for a period of 10 years.
At the beginning of May, NDMC updated the proposal, reflecting an increase in the number of parking facilities to be managed by the selected agency from 154 to 155, along with an expansion in total parking capacity of spaces from 14,478 to 15,158 for cars, two-wheelers, buses, and other vehicles.
The modifications were implemented after discussions with the National Buildings Construction Corporation for taking over the management of the newly-built multi-level parking facility (with an estimated 680 car parking spaces) at Sarojini Nagar.
NDMC currently has a mix of off-street (118), on-street (33), and multilevel parking (four), including parking at the basement. The agency proposes to modify these 155 parking sites. The total area at parking lots includes space for 10,322 cars, 4,713 two-wheelers and 123 buses. 'The new intelligent system will feature real-time data on vehicle flow, slot occupancy, daily revenue, and online payments. It will also integrate
FASTag-based fee collection
and monitor manpower deployed at each site,' said the official.
The selected agency will either pay NDMC Rs 7.08 crore monthly or share 50per cent of its
parking revenue
.

After Priest's 20-Year Search, Sukhoi Tires To Be Used On Jagannath Chariot

Kolkata: Lord Jagannath's chariot will have a spring in its steps this summer when it rolls out on Kolkata streets for the Rath Yatra on June 27. After a 20-year search, the Rath Yatra's organiser, ISKCON Kolkata, has found new tires for the massive chariot. The old tires, sourced from a Boeing 747 jumbo jet, have been replaced by tires used on Sukhoi fighter planes and manufactured by MRF. Radharamn Das, vice president and spokesperson for ISCKON Kolkata, shared the fascinating story of finding the best fit for the Lord's chariot. The Rath Yatra in Kolkata started in 1972 with a small chariot housing the three deities taken out through the city's streets. Five years later, a member of ISCKON donated three new chariots for Lord Jagannath and his siblings, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra. Lord Jagannath's chariot was fitted with second-hand tires from a Boeing Jet. Over the years, the tires suffered wear and tear and were repaired before every Rath Yatra. In 2005, however, Mr Das noticed they needed to be changed. This started his 20-year search for new tires for the Lord's chariot. A key challenge for arranging the tires was to assess the weight they would need to bear. "Finding a weighing scale for a massive chariot was a huge task. We eventually managed to weigh it and it came to about nine tonnes. Factoring in the weight of devotees on the chariot during the Yatra, we realised that the tires would need to support a weight of about 16 tonnes," he said. "We first spoke to Dunlop, but they had stopped manufacturing these tires. After extensive research, we found Sukhoi tires to be the best match. We first tried to contact MRF in 2018, but could not get through. Eventually, they got back six years later. In December 2024, they sent a team, we worked out a price and they delivered the tires a month back," Mr Das told NDTV. He shared how MRF authorities were surprised when ISKCON Kolkata first told them their requirement. "We were told that the only other client for these tires is the Indian Air Force," Mr Das quipped. MRF assured them that their tires have an adequate weight-bearing capacity. The four tires cost a total of Rs 1.80 lakh. After the tires were delivered and fitted, a 24-km dry run was organised, and all was found to be well.

New indoor shooting range in Nalanda soon: Dy CM

Patna: The state govt has decided to construct a new indoor shooting range in Nalanda. It will be the first such modern facility in the east and northeast India, said deputy CM Samrat Choudhary on Sunday. Choudhary, who also holds the finance portfolio in the Nitish Kumar govt, said an administrative approval has been given to an amount of over Rs 24 crore for the construction of a 25x50-metre shooting range on a vacant land in Kalyan Bigha of Nalanda district, which is also the native place of CM Kumar. "A 25x50-metre outdoor range will also be developed in the eastern and south-eastern side of the indoor shooting range. The new shooting range will provide the best of facilities to the players to practice for competitions," he said. The deputy CM added an existing 14-year-old 10-metre indoor shooting range at Kalyan Bigha is the second-best in the country, but it does not serve the purpose because of the absence of a 25x50-metre range. The existing indoor range, inaugurated on May 14, 2011, first operated from the panchayat bhavan for more than five years, before the CM inaugurated a 35-lane range on Jan 1, 2017. Choudhary said this was the first such large and modern shooting range in eastern and northeastern India. "Here, scoring is also done automatically and online. Many national level matches have been held here. This is the second shooting range of this kind in the country after Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, where weapons are also provided to the players," he said.
