PFA want games' lawmakers to learn lessons from Taiwoo Awoniyi injury

The Professional Footballers' Association is set to speak to the game's lawmakers in a bid to learn lessons from the incident which left Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi seriously injured, the PA news agency understands.
The Nigerian was placed in an induced coma to aid his recovery from urgent abdominal surgery after he collided with a post in his side's draw with Leicester on Sunday.
The injury occurred after assistant referee Sian Massey-Ellis delayed raising an offside flag against Awoniyi's team-mate Anthony Elanga.
The Club can confirm Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday's match against Leicester City.

The Premier League website states that in line with VAR protocols which apply worldwide, assistants should keep the flag down where there is a 'clear opportunity to score or very obvious attacking phase and tight judgement for onside/offside'.
Another Forest player, Ola Aina, insists the flag should have gone up straight away against Elanga, and told the Daily Mail he felt Elanga was 'miles offside'.
Now, Awoniyi's union, the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), could seek observations from the body which governs football's laws, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), as well as the English game's referees' body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to discuss whether the current rules on delaying flags create issues for players.
The union's priority is understood to be Awoniyi's health and recovery at this stage, but when the time is right it intends to speak to all the stakeholders involved in the incident, including the club and the player. The PFA will ask for observations and look at whether any lessons need to be learned.
The PA news agency understands it is also likely, in light of the incident, that the IFAB will give consideration to whether there is a need to review the VAR protocol and guidelines.
The existing protocol is the result of extensive input from the football world. Prior to VAR's introduction there was much frustration with players being flagged for offside when they were through on goal, and replays later showed they were not actually offside.
Allowing play to continue clearly creates the potential for an injury to the attacker or the goalkeeper, and the protocol tries to strike a balance by stating that if a player is clearly offside then the flag should still go up, but where it is not clear, for fairness, the play continues.

James Norton and Rebecca Adlington take part in 10-hour charity swim

Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington and actor James Norton have taken part in a wild sea swim for a marine conservation charity. On Friday, the two were among those to take the plunge in a 10-hour endurance ocean swim at Joss Bay in Kent, to raise money for the Blue Marine Foundation, a charity committed to addressing overfishing. Ahead of the event, they shared their earliest memories of the sea and pressed the importance of allowing future generations to 'experience the magic of healthy seas'. Ms Adlington told the PA news agency: 'I've always felt a deep connection to water, so when the opportunity came up to support coastal restoration through this event with Talisker and Blue Marine Foundation, it just felt like a natural fit. 'As a swimming challenge, this one stands out because of its direct impact on protecting and preserving marine life, with £150 from every kilometre swum helping to fund essential conservation work.' The two-time gold medal swimmer added: 'I hope people see this event as more than just a challenge, it's a call to action.' A report published by Blue Marine Foundation in July 2024 noted a 92% UK reduction in seagrass meadows and a 95% decline in native oyster reefs over the last century. Happy Valley actor Norton said: 'Like everyone, I'm in awe of the ocean. It's wild, powerful, and under threat. 'Taking a stand is about protecting biodiversity and ensuring future generations can experience the magic of healthy seas.' He added that his family goes by the mantra 'you'll never regret a swim' but admitted he had never been involved with this level of endurance swimming. New government regulations came into force on Friday which give water industry regulator Ofwat the power to retrospectively prevent bonuses paid in cash, shares or long-term incentive schemes to chief executives and chief financial officers for breaches of environmental, customer service or financial standards in a given financial year. Ms Adlington did not have a direct challenge for water companies in the UK but added that the Blue Marine Foundation was committed to coastal regeneration and improving UK waters. Ahead of the event, Norton said: 'My earliest memories of the sea are going on day trips to Scarborough. 'My whole village would cram into a coach and head to the beach for a day of fish and chips, rock and candy floss.' For every kilometre swum by participants at Joss Bay between 7am and 5pm on Friday, Talisker, who are supporting the event, will donate £150 to the foundation.

EXCLUSIVE Newcastle make enquiry over deal for Nottingham Forest star Anthony Elanga as Eddie Howe looks to make his first signing of the summer

Newcastle have made an enquiry to Nottingham Forest over a deal for Anthony Elanga. Mail Sport can reveal that, while discussions are at an early stage, the Magpies are now pursuing a move for the 23-year-old winger. Sources say Forest would demand a sizeable fee for the Sweden international - who has three years to run on his contract – if he indicated he wanted to go. But the move marks Newcastle's first major play of the transfer window, with Elanga being a long-term target. Eddie Howe is a big admirer of the former Manchester United star and there was a deadline-day attempt to sign him during last summer's transfer window. That offer opened at £35million and, while it went higher, a deal was never close. It would take upwards of £50m for movement this time. Elanga, who scored six times last season, operates from the right wing - a priority position for Newcastle – but he is also versatile across the forward line, another key criteria for Howe.
