The seaside resort residents say is plagued by prostitution and noise

It's a popular seaside resort which boasts a promenade, beach and rides, but residents have told how their lives are being made hell.
People living in Blackpool say their lives are being blighted by anti-social behaviour, noise disturbances and even prostitution. They raised their concerns as tens of thousands of holiday-makers are set to flood Britain's resorts and tourist hot spots for the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.
In England, the short-term let sector is unregulated, except in London where there's a 90-day per year cap on letting out properties, SWNS reports.

Blackpool City Council says it's received just one complaint about short-term lets since 2019 – but the council doesn't know how many are in the area.
A total of 16 planning enforcement notices have been issued in the same period.
Residents of the seaside resort town, known for its traditional B&Bs, tell a different story.
Saima Arif, 41, has operated three hotels in Blackpool's town centre for eight years.
She says the proliferation of AirBNBs and other short-term lets, where owners are not present, have brought the character of the street down – with rooms being used for parties until the early hours of the morning and even prostitution.
She said: 'The ones now, there's nobody there. If somebody's booked a double room, they know the code. If they meet friends with a girl, they use that code, go in, use the room, and go out.
'It's like one person's booked the room, a couple who's out for the night and give the code to another couple. They use the room and just go out after an hour.'
She added: 'The people who ran these places for 20-odd years did it right. As soon as they left, it's like everybody started making their own rules. I'm just thinking 'am I the daft one?''
B&B owners Sandra Spriggs, 52, and husband John, 69, have owned the Bianca Guesthouse on Blackpool's Palatine Road for 20 years.
The couple says they have heard loud stag and hen parties inside unattended AirBNBs.
Sandra said: 'My friend lives next door to an AirBNB. It's bloody noisy, especially in the summer – she actually goes to her daughter's for the weekend so she hasn't got to put up with the noise.'
It's not just B&B owners who are concerned.
Marie Fisher, 62, has lived in her flat overlooking Blackpool's south promenade for 20 years. The block, made up mostly of elderly people, was quiet for years. Now, she lives above an AirBNB.
Marie, who works at Blackpool tourist attraction Madame Tussauds, wants to see short-term lets like AirBNBs banned from residential building blocks.
She said: 'You can't go down and knock on the door, you don't know what you're going to be faced with, to be honest with you. It's just frustrating. You try and sleep through it and hope they're only here for one night and going to go.
'Over the space of a week, you could have no-one, or you could have three lots of people. I think the worst thing was when we had rap music blaring out until the early hours, two or three, Eminem blasting out at that time. It was so loud.
'It's stressful, no two ways about it, especially when it starts in the beginning of the night and you think 'oh, here we go again'.'
Tourist organisation StayBlackpool's Ian White, 64, says short-term lets from companies like Booking.com have been on his radar since 2014.
He's heard from families who have been forced to leave their own homes and sleep overnight in a camper van just to escape the disruption of short-term lets.
Despite this, Ian says the town is currently experiencing an oversupply of beds as it struggles to compete with foreign package holiday deals.
Because of this, many guesthouses are now turning to house people from out of the area and prisoners on early release, which can give more consistent income.
The 64-year-old said: 'They bring in a certain amount of antisocial behaviour and other issues. Some traditional holiday accommodation have started to lose business, where regular guests won't come back.'
Ian wants short-term let accommodation to be subject to the same rules as guesthouses in an effort to tackle the oversupply and help bring the guesthouses back to normal operations.
He added: 'Blackpool is looking quite vulnerable.'
Of 15 local councils in England and Scotland, including Blackpool, Glasgow, Manchester, Westminster, and the Isle of Wight, none knew how many AirBNBs were in their area, according to a Freedom of Information Act request.
Only Manchester provided a figure, 98 in 2022, but it said this was 'informally recorded' in 2022 and that the true figure was 'likely to be significantly higher'.
Westminster Council also said it knew about properties when a complaint had been made.
Residents across the country been making hundreds of complaints about noise, rubbish, parking, and other issues with short-term let properties.
Since 2019, a total of 12,891 complaints about short-term lets were received by the 15 councils which answered a Freedom of Information Act request – the bulk of which were in the City of Westminster, which received 11,459.
This was followed by Glasgow, at 463, and Brighton at 264. Manchester was the next highest, at 225, and Liverpool was at 161.
Some councils, such as Manchester, issue informal warnings if a complaint is received, but most do not.
AirBNB, Blackpool City Council, and the Ministry of Housing have been contacted for comment.

That said, free cash flow remained robust at $1.78 billion in Q1, reflecting Airbnb's capital-light, high-margin model. The long-anticipated Summer Release failed to inspire confidence. Airbnb expanded into local services—chefs, photographers, massages—and rebranded Experiences across hundreds of cities, while also revamping its app. But these were not game-changers. The lack of a loyalty program, despite its proven success at peers like and Uber, was seen as a glaring omission. New verticals like Services appear to offer limited repeat usage, are potentially lower-margin, and introduce operational overhead. With adjusted FCF margins already high and margin expansion opportunities limited, future upside hinges on reaccelerating top-line growth. Without clear evidence that this is achievable, the author exited, concluding that while Airbnb remains a good business, it may no longer be a good stock. When Manny Reyna struggled to find a tenant for one of his investment properties, he turned to a principle he learned from " Blue Ocean Strategy." The book, co-authored by Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne, breaks down the market universe into two main categories: "red oceans" — the industries in existence today, or the known market space — and "blue oceans," the industries not in existence, or the unknown market space. While "red ocean strategy" is all about competing in an existing market space, "blue ocean strategy" is about creating an uncontested market space and capturing new demand. "One of my homes was not picking up on Airbnb," Reyna, who rents two single-family homes and two tiny homes in San Antonio, told Business Insider. "So, I shifted my strategy to something called mid-term rentals. I took the playbook right out of 'Blue Ocean Strategy': Everyone's looking at this shiny object — short-term rentals — but what about mid-term rentals?" He listed the property on Furnished Finder, which specializes in 30-day plus stays and is geared toward traveling professionals. It's less mainstream than sites like Airbnb and VRBO, and Reyna had to spend time familiarizing himself with a new platform. "Furnished Finder charges you to post your home, they bring in tenant leads, and then you have to engage them, so that's a whole other thing," he said. "I had to make templates and figure out the whole process, everything from screening tenants through a third-party app called KeyCheck to taking deposits and writing leases." The upfront work paid off, he said: "When I went to mid-term rentals, I was able to pick up a lot more bookings. For whatever reason, in the area where the home is in San Antonio, there are a lot of medical professionals that go there, a lot of construction professionals, and a lot of business professionals." Using books to get his foot in the real estate door Reyna spent years working in the US Army before purchasing his first property. "I was a medic, so we wouldn't really have too much to do unless somebody got hurt. With that downtime, I read so many books about business and real estate and finance," he said. "We didn't have a way to get internet a lot of the time, so I just read anything I could get my hands on." When he was wrapping up his service in 2021, he had about $12,000 in savings, a family to support, and a career to figure out. "I was super concerned about a lot of things," he said. But, as interest rates started to drop to historic lows in 2021, Reyna recognized an opportunity to buy property and start building equity. The knowledge he'd acquired reading "Blue Ocean Strategy" and other books, including "Rich Dad Poor Dad" and "Profit First," helped him turn the idea of buying a home into reality relatively quickly. "I won't say that I was an expert, but I had some confidence," he said. The mindset he developed in the Army also helped him act quickly. "They teach you to make a decision and act on it. I was just thinking, 'This is a now-or-never moment. The interest rates are super low. I know they're going to go back up soon.'" He found a single-family home, financed it with a 0% down VA loan, and locked in a 3% interest rate. He and his family moved in in the spring of 2021. That property is now one of four rentals that he owns. Self-education is one lever you can pull if you're cash-strapped or starting from scratch. "I really just read anything I could get my hands on because I felt like I was so behind and needed to figure out a way to make money for my family," said Reyna. "So that was the fastest thing I could do — just read, read, read, read, read, and try to get caught up on everything."

Years ago, startups called Uber and Airbnb changed the way Americans thought about taxicabs and hotels. An app named Swimply is attempting another paradigm shift. This time, the subject is swimming pools. Swimply allows users to rent backyard pools by the hour. Launched in 2019, the company now hosts 15,000 private pools in more than 150 cities, according to Bunim Laskin, its 28-year-old CEO. He says business has doubled in the past year. Renting a neighbor's swimming pool is 'a brand-new behavior that's objectively healthy for people in every conceivable way,' Laskin said. 'It's the one app that lets you put your phone away and spend time with the people you love.' Renting a backyard pool: How does that work? And if you own a backyard pool, you might be wondering how, exactly, an app like Swimply would work. How might it feel to have a carload of strangers show up and jump into your pool? What would the neighbors think? Who supplies the towels? Just like Uber and Airbnb before it, Swimply has inspired bureaucratic puzzlement in some local governments. Remember the days when Uber threatened the nation's taxicab fleet, and when cities mobilized to ban Airbnb rentals? Similar skirmishes have erupted over Swimply. In Rockland County, New York, officials are investigating whether private pool rentals violate public health codes. Regulators in Minnesota and North Carolina are treating Swimply rentals as 'public pools,' with all that the term implies about licensing and regulation. Affluent D.C. suburbs have struggled with Swimply. Laskin said the regulatory challenges have affected 'less than 0.2%' of pool hosts. 'Pools are very dangerous things' Questions swirl, too, about potential liability. Swimming pools are, after all, filled with water. People can drown in water. Many homeowners go to great lengths to keep strangers out of their backyard pools, rather than lure them in. 'Pools are very dangerous things,' said Matthew Alegi, a real estate lawyer outside Washington, D.C. 'There's no lifeguard sitting at these Swimply pools.' Of course, the idea of renting a backyard pool is nothing new. Many vacation rentals come with pools. Home-sharing and vacation rental sites Airbnb and Vrbo offer liability insurance. Some insurers offer short-term rental coverage. With Swimply, however, you're only renting the pool. In the home insurance world, that's a less familiar scenario. 'The issue is that these homeowners are not doing the research to make sure their policy is going to cover it if something goes wrong,' said Khalil Farah, a personal injury attorney in Jacksonville, Florida. Laskin, Swimply's CEO, said the app offers every pool-rental host $1 million in liability coverage, a provision patterned on Airbnb. All pool guests sign waivers. Farah worries, though, that Swimply's insurance policy has 'a ton of exclusions.' If pool renters drink alcohol or violate the rental agreement, he said, Swimply will deny coverage. Farah said pool hosts would be wise to contact their home insurer, explain the situation and ask for a policy addendum that covers the liabilities inherent in renting out a backyard pool. 'You need to make sure the insurance agent knows what you're using it for,' he said. 'You don't know the people,' he said. 'You don't know the location. You don't know how many ring cameras there are.' Pool hosts must set ground rules with neighbors Swimply has taken a cautious approach to pool rentals, Laskin said, fully aware that not everyone on the block will welcome random strangers in swimsuits. Pool hosts are required to reach out to neighbors to establish ground rules about parking cars, pool hours and other items of etiquette. 'And we give neighbors a way to report when it doesn't work out,' Laskin said. All new pool listings "go through a 24-hour verification process by our trust and safety team" to ensure they are safe and secure, Laskin said, followed by an ongoing "review and reporting system." Any pool rental with a one-star review is removed from the app. Laskin said he dreamed up Swimply in 2018. He was the oldest of 12 children in a Lakewood, New Jersey, household. A neighbor had installed a swimming pool. Eying the pool, Laskin offered to help the neighbor with her expenses if she allowed the Laskin kids to use it. The neighbor reluctantly agreed. Within two weeks, she had five families renting her pool, each paying some of the costs. Inspired, Laskin set about building a business. 'I went on Google Earth, found 80 swimming pools, knocked on everyone's doors, got four people to agree, and just plastered my phone number around town,' he said. From four pools to 15,000 Laskin started out with four Lakewood pools for rent. By summer's end, 20 more pool owners had signed on. By the summer of 2019, the list of hosts had grown to 40. Laskin dropped out of school, raised $1 million and launched Swimply. The app grew from five cities in 2019 to 35 in 2020. Business boomed in the pandemic, as families searched for uncrowded pools. Swimply is based in Venice, California, not far from its competition: the ocean. Between 2024 and 2025, Laskin said, the number of Swimply hosts doubled from 7,000 to 15,000. He thinks inflation helped. 'People are looking for additional sources of revenue more than ever, and people are looking to stay local,' he said. Swimply is inordinately popular with stay-at-home moms, a population always looking for healthy outdoor activities. Roughly 70% of Swimply guests are families, Laskin said. Others are lone adults looking to swim laps. A few are larger groups seeking pool parties. Nearly all guests rent pools in their own communities. Pool hosts are allowed to exclude large groups, children or pets. You can also invite pets. The pet-friendly pool has surged in popularity, Laskin said. Hourly fees can top $300, for palatial pools with ocean views. Nine out of 10 rentals happen in summer, but some owners turn a big business in winter with indoor pools, hot tubs and other warm options. Some hosts toss in extra services. Laskin and his wife have rented pool packages that came with chef-prepared dinners, magic shows and pickleball lessons. 'The goal was for your backyard pool to make you a couple hundred bucks, maybe a thousand bucks in summer,' Laskin said. 'And now we have folks earning $100,000 a year. The goal was to have it pay for your pool. Now it's paying for people's mortgages.'
