PWR's regular season finale: What's on the line?
The 2024-25 regular Premiership Women's season comes to a conclusion on Friday night with the placement of the top four clubs yet to be fully decided.Back-to-back Premiership champions Gloucester-Hartpury will enter the post-season play-offs as regular season winners and will complete their campaign with a home match against third-placed Harlequins.Quins are still in the hunt for a second-placed finish but will need help from elsewhere if they are to guarantee a home draw in their play-off semi-final, which is guaranteed to be a London derby against Saracens. If Quins beat Gloucester-Hartpury and Saracens lose to bottom placed Sale Sharks, the west Londoners will claim themselves a home draw - a win for Saracens on Friday, however, and they will play as hosts on Saturday 1 March."I think it's just been a build-up of excitement throughout the season, and the strides we've made have been unbelievable," Harlequins back Beth Wilcock told BBC Radio London."I've never felt more connected within a team environment in my life, so, its quite easy to bring the excitement when you know how each other work - it's all building for Friday."England international scrum-half Ella Wyrwas, who is currently in her second spell at Saracens, is looking forward to the post-season run-in."We've got an amazing fan base at StoneX, so a home semi-final would be great," Wyrwas told BBC Radio London."Home is where we come alive and where we play our best, so we're super excited for that opportunity."Meanwhile, Bristol Bears have already wrapped up fourth place for this season, and they will take the trip to Gloucester-Hartpury on 2 March before the final two weeks later at Saracens' StoneX Stadium.

St Mirren's top-six bid for next season just got harder, says Tony Fitzpatrick
The Buddies legend has pointed to teams such as Hearts, Hibernian and Aberdeen continuing to strengthen while Rangers and Celtic continue to pull away at the top of the Premiership. St Mirren are a top-six club now but achieving that status for the fourth year in a row will be the toughest task yet. That's the message from Buddies legend Tony Fitzpatrick who is eyeing up next season's Premiership campaign. The top flight will kick-off in just under seven weeks and clubs will be returning to pre-season training over the next fortnight. Saints fans will be hoping that the success under manager Stephen Robinson will continue but Fitzpatrick feels Scottish football's big guns have strengthened more than ever and the Paisley men will be in a top-six scrap. He told the Paisley Daily Express: 'No disrespect to the Premiership the last three or four years, I think it's not been the strongest. 'If I'm looking at it, you had a weak Hibs and Hearts and Aberdeen, really. But I think it's going to be the hardest year to get in the top six. Aberdeen are improving, Hibs are improving and Hearts are improving, with Rangers and Celtic continuing to steam ahead.' Fitzpatrick is confident Saints will retain their Premiership status and make the top six — but reckons it's in other competitions where they will thrive. He explained: 'We've got the core of the players plus the boys that will come in. I know that the first thing people say is, 'stay in the Premiership' and I'm sure we'll do that but it's going to be harder. 'I still think we'll get in the top six. But I've just got a real feeling in my gut that we're going to make Hampden in some capacity next season. 'I'm not trying to put pressure on people. I believe that — I've always believed that. The club we've got, the supporters we've got and especially the manager we've got now. 'I think that is Stephen's next aim as he's got us in the top six, he's got us into Europe. I think that's his next step. He got Motherwell into two cup finals but I just feel this time it is in the stars.' Two former Championship sides, Livingston and Falkirk, will join those in the Premiership for the new season. The Bairns will make their first appearance in the top flight since the SPFL formed in 2013. Fitzpatrick is delighted to see John McGlynn's Falkirk return to the top table and expects them to bring a big travelling support to the SMiSA Stadium. He added: 'I remember when we were in the Championship, Falkirk were always the one where every club looked up to to try and emulate. Having Falkirk in is really exciting as they will fill our away end and we will fill theirs. 'John is a fantastic manager and I see Stephen [McGinn] went there as their first-team coach so they'll be exciting. They'll add a lot to the Premiership but they'll see how tough it really is.'

Rangers captain James Tavernier spotted training with ex-team-mate and old Premiership rival who branded him ‘bad loser'
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RUSSELL MARTIN will begin working with his Rangers players when they return for pre-season on June 23. But his captain James Tavernier is already putting himself through his paces so he's in the best shape possible for when he returns to Glasgow to meet his new boss at the end of his summer break. Tavernier has instead travelled across the globe in recent years to put himself through some gruelling training sessions with elite coaches. The veteran right-back's favourite summer hotspot is in fact Dubai - but not for the glitz and glamourous nightlife. He's over in the UAE this week to link up Elite Sports Performance to improve his fitness ahead of the high-octane start to the football season, with crucial Champions League qualifiers on the horizon. The Dubai-based performance team shared videos of Tavernier undertaking various running drills in the searing heat. But the Englishman wasn't there alone. Among the other professional footballers joining him for the workout was former Light Blues team-mate Antonio Colak. Clips were shared showing him taking part in a passing drill with the ball, while Tavernier did his sprints. The Croatian striker spent a year playing alongside Tavernier at Ibrox and scored 18 goals during the 2022/23 season before he left to head to Italy with Parma at the end of that campaign. But while one of Tavernier's old team-mates was there, so was one of his old Premiership rivals. Scotland star Ryan Porteous joined the right-back for the summer camp and was filmed taking part in the running-based drills with the Rangers skipper. The pair probably haven't come face-to-face since Porteous left Hibs to join Watford in 2023. They know each other well, though, as both players were never far away whenever there was a heated altercation during Rangers vs Hibs clashes. The two players even famously had a fallout on the pitch which led to both Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos snubbing a handshake from the defender at full-time. In September 2020, both clubs battled out a 2-2 draw at Easter Road and Steven Gerrard - who was Gers manager at the time - revealed that Porteous had accused Tavernier of being a 'bad loser' at the end of the contest. Tavernier then refused to acknowledge the defender and was backed up by his Colombian team-mate. Gerrard was seen speaking to Porteous at the end of the game too and the defender appeared to laugh off at comments made by the Liverpool legend. Gerrard said at full-time: "I think he was saying that Tav's a bad loser which I think is a bit cheap coming from him. 'He got sent off for a really bad tackle when he was losing 3-0 against us here last season. "I don't agree with that or the argument." But Lenglet's time against PSG ended in disaster when he was given his marching orders during the second half. With the score at 2-0 and 13 minutes left on the clock, Lenglet began to argue with Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs after a minor decision went against Atleti. The official was having none of it though and quickly brandished a yellow card. He was quickly made aware of the incorrect decision though. And after a minute, Kovacs returned to Lenglet before producing a red card. Fans were quick to react though, with many criticising Kovacs. But he will be able to play in the final group match against Brazilian champions Botafogo, with the winner likely to claim second spot behind an unstoppable-looking PSG side. Lenglet is best known to Premier League fans for underwhelming loans at Tottenham and Villa. He made 35 appearances for Spurs during the 2022/23 season, with the Londoners opting against making his move permanent. Lenglet then spent the following campaign at Aston Villa, but failed to impress in 25 outings.
