Amber Heard moves into theatre
Amber Heard has been announced as part of the cast for Spirit of the People.
The project is a departure for the actress into theatre as it's a new play by Jeremy O. Harris set to premiere at the 2025 Williamstown Theatre Festival.
He said about the work: 'I wanted to challenge myself.'
The 79th edition of the Massachusetts-based festival, which begins its summer run next year, will include Spirit of the People as a centrepiece.
The production is directed by Katina Medina Mora and will feature 38-year-old Amber alongside Brandon Flynn, 30, and Lío Mehiel, 33. Harris, 35, known for Slave Play and the film Zola, and is leading the festival's new Creative Collective, a shared leadership model also comprised of model and actor Kaia Gerber, 23, producer Alyssa Reeder, entrepreneur Alex Stoclet and choreographer Christopher Rudd.
The play's cast also includes Tony Award nominees Ato Blankson-Wood, 39, and James Cusati-Moyer, 35, as well as Amandla Jahava, Emma Ramos, Julian Sanchez, Zachary Booth and Tonatiuh.
Amber is best known for her work in Aquaman, Zombieland, Pineapple Express and the miniseries The Stand.
Brandon Flynn rose to prominence in 13 Reasons Why and recently appeared in the Off-Broadway production Kowalski.
Speaking to Variety in February, Jeremy Harris said he was inspired to reshape the festival model, adding: 'The American festivals that work the best and that people are most thrilled by are our music festivals.
'They do a really good job of creating a sense of community. And that's something that summer stock theatre has let slip over the last few decades.'
Spirit of the People, according to the official description, 'confronts uncomfortable truths about land and what it means to destroy it'.
Jeremy also said the production marks a significant shift in his creative direction, adding: 'The play is half in Spanish, and I don't speak Spanish. The play has a significant level of prose within it. I'm not a prose writer. I'm trying a lot of different things.'
The rebranded festival, known as W71, will feature original and reimagined works spanning genres and disciplines.
Alongside Spirit of the People, audiences will see a revival of Tennessee Williams' Camino Real and Not About Nightingales.
New works include The Things Around Us, a solo musical created and performed by Ahamefule J. Oluo, produced by Roya Amirsoleymani, and Many Happy Returns, a dance piece choreographed by Monica Bill Barnes and written with Robbie Saenz de Viteri.

'No space for Bezos': Locals protest as Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez descend on Venice for extravagant three-day wedding
Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez are preparing to tie the knot in what's being touted as the "wedding of the century", but not everyone is celebrating. The billionaire tech mogul, 61, and his fiancée, 55, are set to host a glitzy three-day ceremony in Venice from Tuesday to Thursday, with the festivities expected to bring parts of the historic city to a standstill. Plans for the opulent event have largely been kept under wraps, but reports suggest no expense has been spared since the world's second richest man popped the question in May 2023 with a jaw-dropping 30-carat diamond ring. The pair will reportedly host their guests at the ultra-exclusive Aman Hotel, the same venue George and Amal Clooney used for their 2014 nuptials, and have also booked out rooms at the Gritti Palace, St. Regis, Belmond Cipriani and Hotel Danieli. But while celebrity guests like Oprah Winfrey, Ivanka Trump, Katy Perry, Eva Longoria, Gayle King and members of the Kardashian clan are expected to attend, many Venetians are pushing back. A local protest group calling itself "No Space for Bezos", a nod to the tech billionaire's Blue Origin space venture, has launched a vocal campaign against the wedding, plastering the city with banners and posters taking aim at the Amazon founder's presence. "Venice is being treated like a showcase, a stage," protest organiser Federica Toninelli told the BBC. "And this wedding is the symbol of the exploitation of the city by outsiders… Venice is now just an asset." Toninelli, 33, said the group brings together a range of activist collectives, from housing campaigners to anti-cruise ship advocates. "These topics are all linked," she said. "They all have to do with Venice turning into a place that puts tourists, rather than residents, at the centre of its politics." On Thursday, protesters scaled the bell tower of the San Giorgio Maggiore basilica and unfurled a banner, while another was draped over the Rialto Bridge. This week, the group plans to block Venice's calli (its narrow alleyways) and disrupt water taxis by jumping into the canals to obstruct guests from reaching the event. Joining the local activists are Greenpeace and UK-based collective 'Everyone Hates Elon', a group that takes aim at the world's richest man, Elon Musk. On Monday, the two organisations unveiled a massive banner in St. Mark's Square that read: "If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax." "Jeff Bezos is the second-richest man in the world yet is reported to pay a 1.1% true tax rate," the groups said in a joint statement, as per Variety. "The multi-million-dollar wedding is reportedly happening over three days, with the wedding ring alone worth as much as $5 million." Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro has condemned the demonstrations, saying he hopes the Amazon founder and his former TV journalist fiancée go ahead with the wedding regardless of the backlash. "We will have to apologise to Bezos," Brugnaro told reporters on Friday. "I am ashamed of those who behave like this. I hope that Bezos comes anyway," he said, adding that "not all Venetians think like these protesters." If the Bezos' nuptials go ahead as planned, they'll mark Venice's most high-profile celebrity wedding in over a decade. Nine's golden man Karl Stefanovic is reportedly in line for a pay rise with his proposed new multi-year deal. Despite months of tension as the network endeavours to cut costs – with some broadcast stars said to see their salaries slashed going into the new financial year – The Australian reports the 50-year-old Today host will be earning a staggering $3 million annually under the proposed contract. Stefanovic, whose co-host Sarah Abo reportedly earns $800,000 per year, had previously signed a reported $2.8 million deal in 2022. It's a different story over at Channel 7, where Sunrise has long beaten Today in the breakfast timeslot. Despite their stronghold with viewers, hosts Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington are said to earn much less than Stefanovic, and are on around $1 million each per year. Stefanovic's rumoured pay rise comes after Nine Entertainment signalled its intention to slash $100 million in costs by 2027 back in February. According to its half-year results, the company was planning more restructuring as part of its 'strategic and cultural transformation.' Nat Barr and Matt Shirvington dominate ratings with Sunrise. Nine let go up to 200 staff members, mostly from its print divisions, in July last year after Meta sensationally ceased commercial agreements with news outlets in Australia, which previously saw the tech giant pay news companies for their reporting. Just two months later, it was reported Nine had a microscope on their big ticket stars, or rather, their jumbo pay packets, with stalwart Liz Hayes among those rumoured to be copping a pay cut at the time (Hayes quit the network earlier this year after 44 years). More change came in January when the Nine Darwin bulletin was axed. Residents in the NT are now served the Queensland bulletin, while the Gold Coast-based bulletin scaled back from two newsreaders to one, with presenters Eva Milic and Paul Taylor splitting their duties across the week. Elsewhere in entertainment, the network famously didn't renew the long-running game show Millionaire Hot Seat in 2023 (though that gamble has also paid off with Tipping Point dominating ratings), while Australian Ninja Warrior and My Mum, Your Dad were also put on ice. It's been a turbulent period for broadcasters in Australia amid an unstable economy and a mass shift to streaming. Most recently, Ten canned prime time current affairs program The Project. The final episode will be this Friday. The network also revealed its reshuffled evening line-up, with game show Deal or No Deal moving to 7pm and 'the launch of a new national one-hour 6pm news, current affairs and insights program six days a week to complement 10's one-hour 5pm local news bulletins.' 'As a result of the changes, The Project will air for the last time on Friday, June 27, ending an incredible run of almost 16 years and more than 4,500 episodes,' Ten said in the statement earlier this month.
