ITV News26-04-2025

Coronation Street star Philip Lowrie, one of Corrie's original cast members, has died aged 88, his publicist has confirmed.
The Lancashire-born actor passed away on Friday, according to his publicist Mario Renzullo.
"My client and very dear friend, Philip Lowrie, the beloved actor renowned for his role as Dennis Tanner on Coronation Street, passed away yesterday at 88," Mr Renzullo wrote in a statement.
"His death marks the end of an era for the world's longest-running soap, where he became a cornerstone of its storytelling."
At 24, Mr Lowrie made television history when he appeared in the very first episode of Coronation Street in 1960, playing Dennis Tanner, the son of Elsie Tanner, portrayed by Pat Phoenix.
Dennis's rebellious charm and stormy relationships quickly made him a fan favourite.
Mr Lowrie stayed with the show until 1968, before making a dramatic return to the cobbles in 2011.
In September 2011, Mr Lowrie was awarded a Guinness World Record for the longest gap between television appearances as the same character in the same show.
Born in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London after his mother saved enough to cover his fees.
After graduating, he made his West End debut in Farewell, Farewell Eugene alongside Margaret Rutherford and Peggy Mount.
Mr Lowrie was also a regular on Victoria Wood's television shows, appearing in All Day Breakfast, As Seen on TV, Wood and Walters, and others.
A versatile performer, he held many leading stage roles, including Major Metcalf in The Mousetrap (2004), Klever in The Case of the Frightened Lady (2018), and Eric in The Lady Vanishes (2019).

‘He's not coming back': Casualty confirms death tragedies as BBC drops new trail

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Iain Dean (Michael Stevenson) is in danger in Casualty soon, as this new trailer shows the drama he will be involved in throughout the medical drama's next boxset. The new mini-series is called Supply and Demand and primarily focuses on the paramedics working at Holby City Hospital. In the first episode – which airs this Saturday – it's been three months since the ambulance crash, and Jan Jennings (Di Botcher) is still struggling to trust young paramedic Indie Jankowski (Naomi Wakszlak). For Iain, who has a great deal of experience when it comes to crashing ambulances and landing into trouble, he takes Indie under his wing and grows frustrated at Jan, believing she should move past the incident. The twelve-parter will delve into the realities of a drug crisis as an interruption to the drug supply chain causes the ED to fall under even more pressure. In this trailer, we see the moment Iain chases danger again, climbing up onto a crane for a daring rescue. As the paramedic team begins to fall apart as a result of many factors, Iain will spend time with Hart – the Hazardous Area Response Team. Star Michael Stevenson recently told me more about Iain's decision to leave Holby…albeit temporarily. 'The offer that comes in for Hart, it sort of side-lines him a little bit and you know as much as he is happy that he's settled now and married and all that kind of stuff, you'll never take that element away from him that he is drawn to the excitement and the thrill of danger. 'And you know he's been with Hems before, Hems is always a good shout for him to do because of the next level up of rescue that he gets to do and stuff like that, but Hart is a whole new level. More Trending 'That is his first temptation away from it, but then what reinforces that is the team around him that he's spent so long building and nurturing is slowly starting to fall apart and that only gets worse as things transpire after this episode.' Supply and Demand will also see Flynn (Olly Rix) struggle to connect with his daughters, while Ngozi (Adesuwa Oni) continues to receive support from Dylan (William Beck), following the reveal that she has an addiction to alcohol. This beloved Soho pub is closing for good

Another London boozer bites the dust. Soho pub The Shaston Arms will be shutting its doors on June 15. In a statement, brewers Hall & Woodhouse said, 'We are disappointed that after 25 wonderful years, we are sadly saying goodbye to The Shaston Arms in Carnaby. Our wish was to renew the lease on the building, but we understand that the landlord wishes to pursue a restaurant offer on Ganton Street.' Though it looked like a Victorian-era pub, The Shaston Arms actually opened in 1999, and was previously a pair of shops. Run by Dorset-based brewers Hall & Woodhouse, the name 'Shaston' was taken from the Shaftesbury-inspired town present in a number of novels by Dorset-born writer Thomas Hardy. A number of other Hall & Woodhouse pubs in London remain, including the famous Ship and Shovell by Embankment, which is split across two buildings facing each other that are joined by an underground cellar. Earlier this year another much-loved London pub closed, north-west London's Ye Olde Swiss Cottage. Want to drown your sorrows? These are the best pubs in Soho, according to us.

Emmerdale and Coronation Street face major changes

Peter Fincham was the former Director of Television at ITV before Kevin Lygo took over. Fincham has suggested that, due to budget concerns at ITV, Emmerdale could move filming away from Yorkshire and merge production with Coronation Street in Manchester. The ex-ITV boss has predicted that following the recent announcement of daytime changes at the broadcaster, it's likely executives are looking at similar measures for the two soaps. It's the question on everyone's minds... Is Robert back for good? Read more here: Discussing the soaps on The TV Podcast, Fincham said: "You've got Coronation Street being made in Manchester, Emmerdale in Leeds. 'Could you imagine, rather like the daytime consolidation, that ITV will decide to have them both made in the same place under one umbrella? Big savings. 'You still keep Emmerdale set in Yorkshire, but it could be made in Manchester and Salford, which is a bigger hub for ITV. 'I don't think that's inconceivable — it might be being planned as we speak." Emmerdale is currently made in north Leeds, while Coronation Street is mostly filmed in MediaCity in Salford. As the ex-ITV boss adds: "The new hub for Coronation Street in Salford, it cost many, many millions of pounds and it was better facilities for all the people who worked on it in the old place in the middle of Manchester." "Both are uniquely set in Manchester and Leeds and that production model will continue for the long term. "It's pure speculation to say otherwise." The change follows news that ITV is making major changes to its daytime scheduling in 2026. The overhaul will see Good Morning Britain (GMB) extended by half an hour from January 2026, while Lorraine Kelly's morning talk show will be reduced to 30 minutes for 30 weeks of the year.
