Fact Check: No, Vance didn't try to 'challenge' Jasmine Crockett during congressional hearing
Claim:
U.S. Vice President JD Vance questioned Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Tex., during a congressional hearing in early May 2025.
Rating:
A rumor that circulated online in May 2025 claimed U.S. Vice President JD Vance tried to "challenge" U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Tex., during a recent congressional hearing.
For example, on May 11, 2025, the DP Insights YouTube channel posted a video (archived) with the title, "JD Vance Tried to Challenge Jasmine Crockett, He Wasn't Ready for the Clapback!" The clip received well over 200,000 views.
The video's description read:
During a high-stakes congressional hearing on federal housing reform, Senator JD Vance took aim at Representative Jasmine Crockett—questioning her leadership, her city, and the people she represents. But what happened next wasn't loud or theatrical. It was personal, calculated, and devastatingly effective.
Crockett didn't just respond—she redirected the entire conversation, shedding light on rural poverty, double standards, and the cost of being unheard. Backed by facts and her own lived experience, she turned a pointed question into a defining moment that left the room stunned and the internet buzzing.
This is more than politics. It's about who gets blamed, who gets ignored, and who finally decides to speak up.
Watch until the end—you'll understand why people are still talking about it.
Numerous other users on Bluesky, Facebook (archived), TikTok and X (archived) also shared the rumor, as did additional YouTube users. Users who left comments under the DP Insights video and other posts indicated they believed the story genuinely occurred.
However, searches of Bing, DuckDuckGo and Google found no news media outlets reporting on (or authentic videos showing) Vance and Crockett engaging in a discussion during a recent congressional hearing, indicating the rumor was false. The video also featured disclaimers about its fictional content.
Representatives for Vance and Crockett did not immediately respond to emails asking if they wished to share any official statements about this made-up matter.
The DP Insights YouTube video's text description featured a disclaimer about its fictional content, reading:
Disclaimer: The stories presented on this channel are entirely fictional and crafted solely for entertainment. Any resemblance to real events, individuals, or situations is purely coincidental and unintentional. These narratives are not intended to depict, reference, or represent any actual occurrences, persons, or entities.
A similar disclaimer very briefly appeared during the first second of the clip.
The video's text description also displayed a label reading: "How this content was made: Altered or synthetic content. Sound or visuals were significantly edited or digitally generated." YouTube users sometimes enable this label during the video-upload process to alert viewers that creators used artificial-intelligence (AI) tools to make various components of their content, for example to write a script or to generate a voice narration track.
One of the more glaring red flags indicating the Vance-Crockett story's inauthentic roots concerned the fact that the DP Insights YouTube video made no mention of Vance's new vice-presidential role, instead only referencing him by his old title of U.S. senator.
The false rumor about Vance and Crockett was simply the latest in a long line of made-up claims about political figures purportedly engaging in heated debates that never occurred in reality. Such rumors often rumors often spread main Facebook posts and YouTube videos, either with or without disclaimers. For example, on May 10, the DP Insights channel posted another video (archived) telling a fictional story. That clip, which ultimately received more than 375,000 views, displayed the title, "Kash Patel Goes NUTS After Jasmine Crockett EXPOSED THIS Live On AIR."
For further reading, a previous fact check examined a false rumor claiming Crockett experienced a "tense exchange" with stand-up comedian Bill Maher on his HBO show, "Real Time With Bill Maher."

JD Vance talks Trump-Musk clash, Hendrickson's Bengals contract with Theo Von
Vice President JD Vance weighed in on the clash between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk during an interview on Theo Von's podcast, calling it a "huge mistake" for Musk to go "at war with the world's most powerful man." Speaking on a June 7 episode of Von's podcast, "This Past Weekend," filmed two days earlier at Kid Rock's newest restaurant in Nashville, Von covered a lot of political ground with the Middletown, Ohio, native. The duo caught up from their last conversation seven months ago in October, when Vance was still a U.S. Senator from Ohio running on the Republican ticket alongside Trump. Vance was in Nashville as the featured guest of a Republican National Committee fundraiser, according to USA TODAY Network paper The Tennessean. Von, a stand-up comedian, actor and podcaster from Covington, Louisiana, has regularly featured guests of all kinds on his podcast, including Trump, Morgan Wallen, Mark Zuckerberg, Ben Affleck and others. Here's the highlights from Vance's latest conversation with Von. Joining the ranks of Trump allies out on Sunday shows and in media interviews to advocate for the administration's tax and policy bill, Vance and Von's conversation centered around the more than 1,000-page "big beautiful bill" going through Congress. It didn't take long for Von to address the elephant in the room: the break-up between Trump and Musk. Vance spoke with Von just hours after relations between Trump and Musk, once a close confidant in the White House, crumbled amid a social media firestorm June 5. Musk has been a vocal opponent of the bill, describing it as a "disgusting abomination." Vance, who told Von he had watched the brawl unfold as he was on the plane to Nashville, took time to defend the bill, while also praising Musk for the work he's done in the White House with cutting government spending. "I'm always going to be loyal to the president and I hope that eventually Elon kind of comes back into the fold," Vance said. "Maybe that's not possible now because he's gone so nuclear, but I hope it is." After saying he had not yet seen Musk's accusation claiming Trump is a part of unreleased Jeffrey Epstein files, Vance reacted live to Musk's post with a strong denial. "First of all, absolutely not. Donald Trump didn't do anything wrong with Jeffrey Epstein," Vance said of Epstein, a financier and sex offender whose exploitation of teenage girls and death in a federal prison has given political ammunition to both parties. Vance said the president is frustrated with the criticisms coming from Musk about the spending bill, but Trump doesn't think he needs to be in a "blood feud" with Musk. Von pulled up a viral tweet from U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-KY, criticizing how members of Congress had to vote on the "big beautiful bill" without having enough time to read through its hundreds of pages. Massie's concern with lawmakers voting on the bill without full knowledge of its contents has been echoed by other Republicans nationwide, including U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene in Georgia. Vance, prefacing his rebuttal by saying Massie and him "get along," said the House of Representatives has another opportunity to review the bill after it goes through the Senate. And, Vance said, Massie and other Republicans have had weeks to review the bill while it was being written. "The idea that people haven't had an opportunity to actually read it is ridiculous," Vance said. "They're in fact going to have to vote on it again before it even becomes law." Closing out the interview with Von, Vance shared his thoughts about the ongoing contract negotiations with Cincinnati Bengals' defensive end Trey Hendrickson. Hendrickson, who led the NFL in sacks last season with 17.5, wants more money from the Bengals and a contract extension. Vance said the Bengals paying Hendrickson what he wants is worth the money and a factor in leading the team to a championship this season. "Trey, if you're watching this show: If you're a Republican, I will show up to a Bengals game and take a photo with you if you sign on with the Bengals," Vance joked. "And if you're a Democrat, I'll stay the hell away. Just sign with the Bengals, because we've got a chance, man." It was later deleted, but screenshots circulated on social media and drew a quick rebuke from Mr. Trump's allies, including Vice President JD Vance, who called Mr. Moran's post an 'absolutely vile smear.' 'Yes, he is one of the people who conceptualizes the impulses of the Trumpist movement and translates them into policy. But that's not what's interesting about Miller. It's not brains. It's bile. Miller is a man who is richly endowed with the capacity for hatred. He's a world-class hater. You can see this just by looking at him because you can see that his hatreds are his spiritual nourishment. He eats his hate. Trump is a world-class hater. But his hatred only a means to an end, and that end his his own glorification. That's his spiritual nourishment.' White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and Vice President JD Vance both posted about Moran Sunday, calling for ABC News to 'hold Terry accountable.' In a statement to TVLine, an ABC News spokesperson said: 'ABC News stands for objectivity and impartiality in its news coverage and does not condone subjective personal attacks on others. The post does not reflect the views of ABC News and violated our standards — as a result, Terry Moran has been suspended pending further evaluation.' Moran, who joined ABC in 1997, is the network's senior national correspondent and an anchor for the ABC News Live streaming service. He also leads ABC's coverage of the Supreme Court.
