Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk has announced former Turkey midfielder Arda Turan as its new head coach, replacing Marino Pusic.
Turan, 38, has signed a contract until 2027 after taking unfancied Eyupspor to a sixth-place finish in the Turkish top flight.
Next season, 15-time Ukrainian champion Shakhtar will feature in the Europa League first qualifying round having won the domestic cup earlier this month.
'I'm proud to have joined Shakhtar - a great club with a rich history and great traditions,' Turan said in a Shakhtar statement.
'We are deeply motivated to win trophies - both in Ukraine and in European competitions.'
Shakhtar was forced to leave its home ground, the Donbass Arena in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, after Russian-backed separatists seized control of the region in 2014.
Its home league games take place in the western city of Lviv.
It held its Champions League games this term in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
Turan retired from playing in 2022 after spells with Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Galatasaray. He also won 100 caps for his country.

Gian Piero Gasperini Joins AS Roma After Nine Successful Years At Atalanta

Last Updated: After an illustrious stint as Atalanta's head coach, Gian Piero Gasperini turns his eyes on an AS Roma side that narrowly missed out on a Champions League berth. Italian side AS Roma appointed Gian Piero Gasperini as their new head coach after the experienced manager ended his successful nine-year stint with Atlanta. Turning the Atalanta side into one of Italy's finest outfits during his term with a Europa League title to boast of last year, Gasperini now sets his eyes on AS Roma after they finished fifth in the Serie A. The 67-year-old joins the club on a three-year deal that ends in the 2028 season. 'Gasperini's career is defined by its creative tactics, dedication to hard work, and exceptional player development. Both ownership and Claudio Ranieri believe Gasperini is the right man for the mission," AS Roma said on their website, announcing the Italian giant's arrival to the club. AS Roma needed a replacement for their former head coach Claudio Ranieri after he stepped down from the prominent role following a fifth-place finish this season. AS Roma managed to pull 20 wins out of their 38 games to end with 69 points for the season, five behind Gasperini's Atalanta side that finished third and 13 short of table-toppers Napoli. Relinquishing his Atalanta duties, Gasperini went ahead with the AS Roma offer. Notably, the veteran head coach has chosen AS Roma over Juventus despite the club's efforts to bring him to Turin. Gasperini's familiarity with the Juventus setup was expected to pave his return. He started his playing and coaching careers in Juventus' youth system, guiding multiple clubs before making a move to Crotone in 2003. An intense character infamous for his outbursts against journalists, Gasperini is gearing up for a highly demanding job to revive AS Roma's fortunes. The club last reached the Champions League back in 2021-22, having missed out on a spot in Europe's top club competition by just one point to Juventus this summer. Gukesh reminds me of myself from 2008-2009, says Magnus Carlsen

Magnus Carlsen believes the next generation of chess superstars, including reigning world champion D Gukesh, is on the right track. But, the five-time world champion opined that the youngsters have a lot more ground to make up in many aspects of the game in order to catch up with the experienced set, including himself, Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura. Carlsen also likened Gukesh's current playing style to his from over 15 years ago, in terms of the lack of control over games. 'I think the kids are on track, but they're not way ahead of schedule. Looking at Gukesh play, I feel it's quite similar to what I was doing in 2008-2009, when I was breaking through. It wasn't always so pretty. There was this tournament for instance, Linares 2008, where Vishy [Viswanathan Anand] was cruising in first place and I was just like playing crazy games and honestly getting more out of the positions than what my pure chess skill suggested,' said Carlsen after winning Norway Chess 2025. But the Indian Grand Master succumbed to a defeat to Caruana and eventually settled for third in the standings. MORE DETAILS | Norway Chess 2025: Gukesh, Humpy finish third after late slip-ups; Carlsen, Muzychuk win title Carlsen lauded Gukesh's ability to stay in title contention in elite tournaments, despite his error-prone ways. 'You can see in certain parts of the game, Gukesh and Arjun are far behind myself, Fabiano, and Hikaru. But we're also the very best players in the world. They're not supposed to be our equals in every part of the game. The fact that Gukesh can actually fight for tournament victory despite having so many bad positions which he will probably not be happy with it himself; but it is encouraging and I think it's typical, that's what kids do as part of the process,' added Carlsen.
