Iowa football special teams star given lofty predictions from CBS Sports
Strong special teams are synonymous with the Iowa Hawkeyes. LeVar Woods, Iowa's special teams coordinator and arguably the best in the country, has transformed the unit into one that has won games for Iowa and often dictates field position in Big Ten battles.
One way Iowa helps its offense and defense is with the punting unit. While it isn't flashy or always the most fun, Iowa does it more effectively than just about anyone in the country. They back their opponents up to help the defense, which in turn creates short fields for the offense to work on.
Leading the charge for Iowa in the punting game is the Australian, Rhys Dakin. Entering his second year with Iowa, Dakin knows he is a vital part of Iowa's success and is hoping to take the next step forward after a strong freshman campaign.
If he can continue his punting prowess, CBS Sports believes he could take home the Ray Guy Award as college football's top punter.

The Hawkeyes have another really good one in Dakin, who averaged 44.1 yards per boot as a true freshman last season while totaling 2,822 yards with his leg, ranking eighth nationally. Rhys Dakin punted 64 times for Iowa in the 2024-25 college football season with a booming average of 44.1 yards with a season-long of 61 yards. More impressively, Dakin dropped 29 of his punts (45.3%) inside the opponents' 20-yard line, which puts them against the odds on pure yardage, let alone going against Phil Parker's Iowa defense.
Iowa will continue to punt and play the field position game as a more conservative team in the country. When done right, as Iowa so often does, it can win games.

"He called me on Thursday, he was like, 'What do we have to do to get you to become a Gator?'" he said. Of course, everything in the program ultimately comes down to the head coach, which is why one particular experience following a staff dinner inside the O'Connell Center stood out. Billy Napier took it upon himself to drive the young prospect back to his hotel afterward in a gesture that really caught his attention. "If the head coach is driving you everywhere and talking to you, that must mean they want you bad," Campbell noted. "I wanted to come here from the start, but I just had to get some confirmation." And the rest, as they say, is history. At least, until it comes time to sign on the dotted line. Recruiting Summary Campbell is ranked No. 594 overall and No. 50 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 industry ranking has him at Nos. 435 and 33, respectively. Tennessee football hiring former Vol as defensive analyst in 2025 Tennessee will kick off its 2025 football season Aug. 30 against Syracuse at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The season opener between the Vols and Orange is slated for noon EDT and will be televised by ABC. Ahead of the upcoming campaign, Tennessee hired former Vol Marion Hobby as a defensive analyst, according to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports. "Tennessee is adding Marion Hobby to its defensive staff, a source tells CBS Sports," Zenitz said. "Hobby, a former All-SEC player at Tennessee, has coached in four NFL conference championship games (Saints, Jaguars, Bengals 2x) and a Super Bowl. Hobby was also part of Clemson's 2016 national championship team." Hobby played on Tennessee's defensive line under head coach Johnny Majors. He was selected in the third round of the 1990 NFL draft by Minnesota. The Vikings traded him to New England. The former Vol played for the Patriots from 1990-92 before launching his coaching career. Hobby served as the Vols' assistant strength and conditioning coach during Tennessee's 1998 national championship season. After scoring just seven points during her 14 minutes of action in the Golden State Valkyries' (3-5) loss to the Phoenix Mercury (6-4) on Thursday, former Iowa women's basketball star guard Kate Martin once again put on an impressive performance in the team's Sunday night 95-68 blowout win against the Las Vegas Aces (4-3) from Chase Center in San Francisco, Calif. The former Hawkeye played a season-high 26 minutes of action off the bench for Golden State, where she recorded 12 points on 5-of-11 from the field and 2-of-7 from 3-point territory, while picking up seven rebounds and one assist.
