Owners urged to neuter pets amid influx of abandoned kittens
An animal rescue centre is warning cat owners not to "get caught out this summer", as unneutered strays have caused an influx of kittens.
Bosses at Bath Cats and Dogs Home say they are currently caring for almost 30 kittens and their mums, many of which are believed to be abandoned.
The high cost of living has left many pet owners struggling to care for an unplanned litter of kittens, and a decline in adoption leaves them without a permanent home.
As the weather warms up, cats are more likely to roam, interact, and find food – prompting the shelter to urge owners to neuter their pets to prevent unwanted litters.
Cats can become pregnant as early as four months old and, if not neutered, may produce up to three litters a year – potentially resulting in hundreds of kittens over their lifetime.
This contributes to the overpopulation of surrendered or abandoned cats in shelters and rescue organisations, which are already struggling to stay afloat.
Bosses at the animal shelter said it costed about £1,700 to house a mum and a litter of kittens for a three-month stay.
On one day in May, a total of 15 cats arrived at the rescue shelter.
Chrissie Anderton rescued an abandoned cat and her six two-day-old kittens from a field in Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, and cared for them for two weeks.
"Having four pets already, sadly, the high cost of keeping seven more cats just wasn't possible in the long term," she said.
"It was hard to say goodbye when I took them to the brilliant Bath Cats and Dogs Home, but I know they are in the safest place and will have a happy future."
In 2024, the rescue centre performed 185 cat neutering operations in their vet suite, which potentially prevented 1,700 unwanted kittens out in the community.
"It is really tough when abandoned pregnant cats or mums and their kittens are left to fend for themselves in the wild, with no food and at risk from predators," a spokesperson said.
"Luckily, some of our current rescue cats were rescued by RSPCA inspectors or members of the public who brought them to us or via a local vet."
The charity expects to see a record number of kittens being born on its site over the next few months and has launched an appeal, called Feline Summer, calling for donations to help care for them.
The 2024 RSPCA Kindness Report revealed that 78% of pet owners say the cost of caring for their pets has increased over the past year.
"Don't get caught out this summer," a rescue centre spokesperson warned.
"Please ask your vet about getting your cat neutered as early as possible to avoid unwanted kittens.
"If you do have a pregnant cat and can't cope with kittens please reach out to your local vet or animal rescue centres for help."

Broward Animal Control officer recovering after Fort Lauderdale dog attack
Four days after a violent dog attack left a Broward County animal control officer hospitalized, friends say she is deeply traumatized and facing a long road to recovery. Tina Bernard, a longtime animal control officer, was mauled last Thursday while responding to a call about a dog in the Riverside neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale, near Davie Boulevard. Police said the American Staffordshire Terrier turned aggressive and attacked Bernard as she approached the home. "I'm happy she's alive" Neighbor Gregory Campbell rushed to help Bernard and was bitten during the struggle. "I'm happy she's alive, but it was all instinct," Campbell said. A friend of Bernard's credited Campbell with saving her life. "I would hope someone would do the same for me. It's our job to look out for each other," Campbell added. According to neighbors, Bernard had been to the same house just a week earlier when the dog had gotten stuck in a fence. She helped free the animal, which at the time did not show signs of aggression. "I'm in shock. I've seen the dog and it was never vicious," said neighbor Ginette Andrew. Review underway Bernard is known among friends and colleagues for dedicating her life to rescuing animals and helping them find safe homes. Now, Broward Animal Control is reviewing the incident to determine whether any protocols need to be updated or changed as a result of the attack.

007 First Light: Here's What James Bond Might Be Up to in His Next Game, Based Mostly on My Hopes and Dreams
More than 70 years after the character first appeared in the novel Casino Royale, James Bond is being reinvented yet again. The latest news comes from IO Interactive, makers of the Hitman games, who announced the title of its upcoming Bond game: 007 First Light, which will be shown off later this week. It has been an interesting year for Bond, with longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson handing creative control over to Amazon MGM Studios in February, and the studio hiring Amy Pascal and David Heyman as their effective replacements. And almost 30 years after the iconic GoldenEye 007 blended espionage elements into first-person shooter gameplay on the N64, we're getting a glimpse of the next incarnation of Bond video games, from a studio that has lots of experience with stealth and subterfuge. The website for First Light describes it as "a wholly original Bond origin story" that will be about Bond earning his 00 status. In Bond lore, agents are only granted 00 status after killing one (sometimes multiple) people as part of an assignment. But guessing that James Bond will have to shoot someone in an upcoming 007 game isn't exactly the boldest prediction. So, what should we expect Bond to be up to in this game? I own all of the Ian Fleming 007 novels and most of the movies and have seen every official Eon-produced Bond film. Based on that extensive experience and (moreso) the willingness to blindly gaze into a crystal ball, here's what I think we might see in First Light. Searching for a missing 007 After decades of books and movies following myriad incarnations of James Bond, a lot has already been explored, but one thing the movies haven't really touched is what happened to the previous 007. That point comes up in the plot of an Anthony Horowitz Bond novel, but is otherwise fresh territory for a game portraying Bond's origins. James inheriting the 007 designation after investigating the disappearance of his predecessor could add new layers of meaning and weight to the title. Discovering Spectre Spectre, the Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion organization, became a recurring antagonist in Fleming's later novels and a frequent presence in Connery films. It's basically a melting pot of criminal organizations from around the world, allowing for conveniently apolitical villainous agendas. Bond unraveling the threads that lead to MI6's first encounter with SPECTRE would be a fun way to nod to the character's history while still treading new ground. Uncovering MI6 corruption Bond himself is prone to going rogue, usually because he of course knows better than the official orders handed to him, so another possible angle is sending him to investigate possible traitorous activity inside his own organization. This could play nicely with the "earning 00 status" element, presenting Bond with situations where he's tasked with taking out former agents gone bad. IO Interactive has said that this will be an original incarnation of Bond -- no Connery, Craig, etc. look-alike. The title teaser shows us a silhouette of the character, but we should get our first proper look at the character in a few days.
