Witkoff slams Hamas over ‘unacceptable' ceasefire proposal response
President Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff said he received a response to the hostage proposal from the Palestinian militant group Hamas, slamming it as 'totally unacceptable' and arguing that it will 'only' take all sides involved 'backward.'
'Hamas should accept the framework proposal we put forward as the basis for proximity talks, which we can begin immediately this coming week,' Witkoff, who has been Trump's point person in high-level diplomatic discussions in Russia and the Gulf, said in a Saturday statement on X.
Witkoff sent over the proposal, which was approved by Israel, on Thursday. The framework included having Hamas, designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government, release 10 living Israeli hostages along with 18 bodies from the Gaza Strip in exchange for a 60-day truce.
Hamas received the proposal and was reviewing it on Friday and Saturday. The militant group then later on Saturday responded to the proposal, saying it is looking for a permanent ceasefire, guaranteed procurement of humanitarian aid to the Palestinians in the war-torn enclave and 'a comprehensive withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.'
Hamas also added that 10 living Israeli hostages and 19 bodies will be exchanged for a number of Palestinian prisoners that would have to be agreed upon by all sides.
Witkoff said on Saturday that his proposal is the 'only way we can close a 60-day ceasefire deal in the coming days in which half of the living hostages and half of those who are deceased will come home to their families and in which we can have at the proximity talks substantive negotiations in good-faith to try to reach a permanent ceasefire.'
Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa'ar said on Saturday that Hamas launched the terrorist attack on southern Israel, killing around 1,200 Israelis and taking some 250 hostages and that the militant group is 'responsible for its continuation by refusing to release our hostages and disarm.'
'If France and the UK want to reach a ceasefire – pressure should be put on Hamas that continues to say No, instead of attacking Israel, which says Yes,' Sa'ar wrote on Saturday.
Trump stated on Friday that Hamas and Israel were 'very close' to reaching a ceasefire agreement that would at least temporarily halt the nearly 20-month war in the enclave.
Hamas also said that it was looking to amend the Israeli-backed proposal, specifically predicated on 'U.S. guarantees, the timing of hostage release, the delivery of aid and the withdrawal of Israeli forces,' according to the militant's senior official who spoke to The Associated Press.

Dawn French ‘dismisses' Oct 7 Hamas attacks

The British comedian and actress, 67, posted a video of herself to X in which she appears to mimic Israel's supporters amid the military campaign in Gaza. In the video, published by French on the social media platform on Thursday, she says about the conflict in the Middle East: 'Complicated, no, but nuanced. But [the] bottom line is no.' She then goes on to mimic apparent defences of Israel's military campaign in neighbouring Gaza since the Hamas-led massacre in 2023, saying: ''Yeah but you know they did a bad thing to us'... Yeah, but no. ''But we want that land and there's a lot of history…'. No. 'These people are not even people, are they really?' No.' In response to the viral tweet, which has been viewed more than half a million times in the 24 hours since it was published, Tracy-Ann Oberman, the West End star and playwright, branded French's tone as 'mocking'. The Jewish actress, 58, reposted French's video and said: 'I am so saddened by this post. 'This mocking voice 'bad thing' of October 7 that Dawn (who I revere by the way) appears to be mocking involved the most horrific terrorist attack involving rape, sexual violence, burning alive child, mutilation and the taking of civilian hostages.' In a subsequent post following the criticism by Oberman, French clarified that she did not mean to 'support the atrocities of Oct 7th'. Writing on X, she said: 'I do not say 'a little thing'. Alert issued for disguised Chinese vaping products targeting West Virginia kids
CHARLESTON, (WBOY) — West Virginia Attorney General J.B. McCuskey is warning of Chinese vape products that are disguised as smart devices and may attract children. According to a release from the Attorney General's Office, reports show that approximately 90% of Chinese vape products entering the United States go undetected. McCuskey and 27 other Attorney Generals have urged the Trump Administration to continue cracking down on China and its 'co-conspirators' distributing the products. 'China is sending billions of dollars of vape products to the United States, but they intentionally mislabel these products to avoid FDA regulation,' McCuskey said in the release. 'We don't know what's in these products, so adults should be aware of that risk.' Advocates help raise awareness in Harrison County for Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month McCuskey went on to say that his main concern is that some vape products seem to be targeting children. Photos provided with the release depict vapes with games and apps on the front, similar to a smart device. The release also said that some vapes have been found containing urine, methamphetamine and heroin. 'I'm a dad to two girls, so I understand parents' constant worry,' McCuskey said. 'We all want to protect our kids, and that job is harder when foreign actors directly target them. I hope to inform the public of this danger while we work with the Trump Administration to stop the problem at its source.'
