TikToker Kayla Malec receives outpouring of support after announcing result of domestic assault case

NBC News09-05-2025

A popular influencer who has been open about her abusive relationship with her ex-boyfriend received an outpouring of support online this week after he pleaded guilty in court.
Kayla Malec, who has 16.6 million followers on TikTok and almost 1.8 subscribers on YouTube, first publicly detailed abuse allegations against Evan Johnson in April, uploading a series of emotional, raw videos about their nine-month relationship.
The videos, which at times included pictures and videos of injuries she said she sustained from Johnson, generated a sympathetic reaction from many of her followers, who praised her for her vulnerability.
Malec's story became the latest saga to captivate people online, as some of her followers began to spread misinformation and condemn another creator who they said appeared to be associated with Johnson.
Johnson was charged by officials in Sumner County, Tennessee, with domestic assault on April 7, according to Sumner County Courthouse records obtained by NBC News. On Wednesday, Malec shared 'justice was served,' as she posted videos of herself outside of a courthouse.
'I'm like really happy right now, I'm going to probably start sobbing,' she said in her video, ' ... but I won. I won!'
Johnson pleaded guilty to a domestic assault charge on Wednesday, and was also ordered to have no contact with Malec, according to court documents. Johnson was also ordered to not operate TikTok, YouTube or Facebook accounts in his name. He also pleaded guilty to a probation violation for a DUI, according to court documents.
A court representative said that Johnson is in custody. Representatives for Malec and Johnson did not respond to requests for comment on Friday.
In the lead-up to the court hearing this week, Malec documented her emotions in videos on TikTok, saying she's experienced anxiety and PTSD after coming forward.
'This is the most depressed I've ever been in my life,' she said in a video last month. '... I know it will get better and I know the healing process takes a long time. And there are days when I feel really good and there are days when I wake up ... and I don't want to get out of bed for the rest of the day.'
She said she's continued to post to help others who have faced similar situations.
'The one thing that's keeping my head up and getting me out of bed is knowing that I'm doing this for a reason and that I'm doing this to help ya'll,' she said.
Malec's celebratory videos collectively received about 20 million likes, as fellow popular influencers — including Haylee Kalil, Jacob Sartorius and Jess DiTirro — commented congratulating her on the verdict.
Singer Kesha, who previously brought abuse allegations against her former producer Dr. Luke, also commented. (Dr. Luke, who has not been charged with a crime, has denied all of Kesha's allegations. In 2023, the two reached a settlement in his defamation suit over her allegation that he raped her.
'I'm so proud of you,' Kesha wrote on Malec's video. 'A win for one is a win for all of us.'

Khaby Lame: World's biggest TikTok star leaves US after being detained by ICE

Khaby Lame, the world's most popular TikTok personality, has left the US after being detained by federal agents. An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokesperson said the Senegalese-Italian influencer - who has 162.2m followers on TikTok - was detained on Friday at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas after he "overstayed the terms of his visa". The 25-year-old had arrived in the US on 30 April, the ICE spokesperson added, and was allowed to leave the country without a deportation order by a voluntary departure. Those with a deportation order on their records can be prevented from being allowed back into the US for up to a decade. While in the US, Lame - whose legal name is Seringe Khabane Lame - attended the Met Gala and the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute benefit gala in New York City. He became famous online during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he would react to complicated life hack videos without saying a word. With millions of followers, he signed a multi-year partnership with designer brand Hugo Boss in 2022, and was appointed as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador in January this year.

Therapy dog missing in Highlands for two weeks as owners continue 'relentless search'

Golden Retriever Louie is trained to alert the family when teen Ellie Lynn is about to have an epileptic seizure. The family of a support dog missing for two weeks has opened up on the 'relentless search' they've carried out for their beloved pet. Louie the two-year-old Golden Retriever is trained to let the family of teenager Elie Lynn know when she is about to have an epileptic seizure. Desperate, the family have left dirty clothing and food around the area to try to lure their pup to safety. ‌ The pooch is now much more than a help for the 17-year-old, becoming "a huge part" of the youngster's family, leaving them heartbroken at his absence. ‌ He has been missing since Monday, May 26, when he slipped free from his choker while walking up Glen Nevis, in Fort William. The family say they are absolutely desperate to bring him home. Despite regularly searching for him in the 16 days since he vanished, Louie is still missing. The family were given hope after hearing barking up the Glen on Sunday, June 8. Owner Louise Manson told the Record today: "It's been an absolute struggle. My 12-year-old daughter, Lara, has been out searching relentlessly with me. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! " Ellie has found the two weeks so hard, it would give her security and her companion back. Home isn't home without him, it would mean the absolute world for him to come home for all of us." ‌ A Facebook group, called Official search page for finding Louie, was set up to try and help track him down, with members of the public helping in the searches. Louise wrote on Monday: "Update, more barking has been heard yesterday, but it could be coming from anywhere. Which is a positive. We have been given other positive information which indicates he's 100% alive yesterday. ‌ "We were out again last night at steall falls until late. Clothes out, food has been left and a wildlife camera. In the hope we can narrow down his location and get him home. "We think with the falls being so busy, he's scared and in hiding during the day. We have been told, shouting his name may make him want to hide further away. So its a case of just seeing where he is and trying to tempt him. "We are confident we will get him home…it's just taking longer than hoped. Again thank you for help, messaging, searching and all your kind words. Its all helping so much at this time." ‌ Posting on the group previously, she wrote: "Just putting it out there. On Monday the 26th of May, if anyone was up Glen Nevis and steall falls. "Has anyone has taken Louie, out of good will thinking he was abandoned, a stray or injured or he followed you on a walk and has become your companion. Please return him. We will travel to collect. This has broken our hearts. "Our home isn't home without him. If you pm us no one will need to know. We just need him home. He was originally my daughters therapy dog for her epilepsy but has become a huge part of our wee family."
