Nearly 4m Vehicles Use Mecca Roads In 10 Days Of Ramadan
More than 3.7 million vehicles used roads leading to the Saudi city of Mecca, home to Islam's holiest mosque, in the first 10 days of the current Islamic month of Ramadan, the kingdom's road authorities have said.
The rise in traffic rates was due to a surge in pilgrims performing the Umrah or minor pilgrimage in the Grand Mosque during Ramadan, the Roads General Authority added.
The Authority said vehicle traffic was facilitated through an integrated system of services including major improvements to the road network infrastructure and implementing the highest safety and quality standards.
The roads were surveyed and maintained, utilizing the latest technologies to ascertain the safety of road users.
The month of Ramadan, noted for devout worshipping, traditionally marks the peak season for Umrah performers.
The Grand Mosque houses the Holy Kaaba, the direction of prayer for Muslims worldwide.
More than 25 million worshippers, including 5.5 million Umrah pilgrims, prayed in the mosque during the first 10 days of Ramadan that began this year on March 1, according to Saudi-owned Al Arabiya TV.
Millions of Muslims from all over the world flock to Saudi Arabia, Islam's birthplace, to undertake the Umrah and pray in the Grand Mosque in Mecca that is known as the 'Holy Capital'.
In the run-up to the sacred month, Saudi authorities have mobilized all resources to receive the influx of pilgrims and enable them to perform the rites with ease and comfort.

In an official statement, the ministry said that timely departure is not only a legal obligation but also a respect for the Kingdom's regulations and the annual pilgrimage season. 'Abiding by the designated departure period preserves the integrity of Hajj procedures and ensures ongoing facilitation for all guests of God,' the ministry said. The ministry further stressed that pilgrims must comply with all relevant laws, use their visas strictly for the purposes of Hajj, and avoid any involvement with unlicensed agents or activities beyond the permitted period. Failure to comply could result in legal penalties or future travel restrictions. Government authorities have launched an extensive departure operation, with the General Directorate of Passports deploying staff and advanced technologies across all international air, land, and sea exit points. 'We have mobilized personnel and security systems to ensure an efficient and orderly exit process for pilgrims,' the directorate said. In the Medina Region, local authorities have started farewelling pilgrims departing via Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport. Many are spending time in the city after Hajj to visit the Prophet's Mosque before returning home. To streamline the process, a dedicated program coordinates transfers from residences to the airport, overseen by the regional Hajj and Visit Committee. Saudi Arabia Announces Beginning of New Umrah Season
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah announced the launch of the Umrah season for the Hijri year 1447, starting Tuesday, June 10, with the opening of visa issuance for those coming from outside the Kingdom. The ministry confirmed that Umrah permits for the foreign pilgrims will be issued from Wednesday, June 11, through the 'Nusuk' app, the unified digital platform for providing government services. The app enables users to book and obtain permits easily, in addition to offering a range of digital services that enhance the experience of Umrah pilgrims. This marks the beginning of a new season that continues efforts to facilitate the journey of the Umrah pilgrims and realize the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030. During the last Umrah season, Saudi Arabia had stopped issuance of Umrah permits in April 2025 and it had set April 29 as the last date for the departure of Umrah pilgrims as it coincided with the beginning of the Hajj Season 2025. The ministry noted that technical and operational preparations for the new season had begun early, in coordination with relevant authorities, to ensure smooth procedures and continuous improvement.
