Meet the actor who is one of the highest-paid stars of Kollywood and has been a recipient of four National Awards. Beyond his screen presence as a hero, he is also known for his contributions to music equally, and has taken on some of the most versatile roles throughout his career of five decades.

Who is Dhanush?
Born in July 1983, Dhanush hails from a family deeply rooted in the film industry. His father, Kasthuri Raja, has been a renowned film director and producer in Tamil cinema. On the other hand, his elder brother, Selvaraghavan, is also a notable filmmaker. The actor's mother, Vijayalakshmi, is a homemaker.
Dhanush hails from Madras, Tamil Nadu, and has two sisters, Vimalageetha and Karthiga Karthik, who are younger than him. The actor and his family prefer to keep their lives low-key and are not often spotted out and about.
Dhanush wanted to become a chef but was pressured to do films
Despite coming from a film background, movies were never the first calling for Dhanush. In fact, he wished to take up a course in hotel management and become a chef. However, his plans never materialized, and it was his brother Selvaraghavan who pressured him to take up acting as a profession.
Foray into films, successes and beyond
Right before stepping into films, the actor changed his name from Venkatesh Prabhu to Dhanush, inspired by the fictional covert operation mentioned in the movie Kuruthipunal.
Dhanush's debut came in 2002 with the teen film Thulluvadho Ilamai, directed by his father, Kasthuri Raja himself. Although this was not a success, he then rose to prominence with his brother's film, Kaadhal Kondein, directed by Selvaraghavan in 2003, for which he received critical acclaim and won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor that year.
With this, he continued to appear in several films, led by either his father, Kasthuri Raja, or his brother, Selvaraghavan, as director.
Dhanush's sprinting acclaim with the song Kolaveri Di
The year 2012 brought a complete turnover for Dhanush with the release of his film 3. Starring Shruti Haasan as the female lead, it was the track Kolaveri Di sung by the former that made his popularity reach far and wide.
For the untold, the viral track was composed within a remarkably short time of 6 minutes, and it was sung and wrapped up entirely in just 20 minutes of brainstorming between him and the composer, Anirudh Ravichander.
Subsequently, Dhanush forayed into Hindi cinema with Aanand L. Rai's Raanjhanaa, co-starring Sonam Kapoor. The film was a raging success and became the highest-grossing film of that year.
Thereafter, in 2022, Dhanush grabbed global notice after he was roped in for the American action thriller film The Gray Man, marking his Hollywood debut.
Dhanush's personal life, marriage to Rajinikanth's daughter Aishwaryaa
Regarding his personal life, Dhanush married Tamil superstar Rajinikanth 's elder daughter, Aishwaryaa, in 2004. The duo are parents to their sons Yatra and Linga.
After 18 years of marital bliss, the couple announced their separation in 2022. They were formally divorced in November 2024. However, Dhanush and Aishwaryaa continue to co-parent their sons together.
Dhanush's work front ahead
Dhanush can be summed up as one of the most versatile artists who has paved his way not just as an actor but also as a filmmaker, producer, and composer. He has four directorial ventures to his name to date, one of which is Idly Kadai, an upcoming project of his releasing this year.
Additionally, he is set to portray the biopic of the Missile Man of India, APJ Abdul Kalam, in a movie directed by Om Raut. In fact, Dhanush was also announced to be reprising the role of legendary music composer Ilaiyarajaa on-screen in a biopic.
He was last seen in Sekhar Kammula's Kuberaa which released on June 20. Dhanush also recently completed shooting for his next Hindi film, Tere Ishk Mein.

Filmmaker Sekhar Kammula Talks About Dhanush's Kuberaa: 'I Don't Make Films With Anger'

In his latest film, Kuberaa director Sekhar Kammula brings together stars Dhanush, Nagarjuna, and Rashmika Mandanna in a narrative that straddles two starkly different worlds – the ultra-rich and the invisible poor. News18 Showsha spoke exclusively to the filmmaker shortly after the film's release. The director clarified that Kuberaa is not a dubbed film, as widely assumed. Sekhar Kammula insisted that Kuberaa is bilingual and crafted with equal care in both Tamil and Telugu. During our conversation, the filmmaker also reflected on the emotional grammar of his cinema, the philosophical roots of Kuberaa, and working with Dhanush. Excerpts from the interview: How are you feeling about Kuberaa's reception so far? Shekar Kammula: Reception has been exceptional, especially in Telugu and overseas. In Tamil Nadu, it's starting slowly, but picking up. Tamil reviews are excellent, but the theatrical collections there have been a little slow. Still, overall, I'm very happy with the outcome. Can you share where exactly the idea of the film came about? That's a difficult question. I don't even know exactly where it started. I think the initial spark came from the class divide, something that's becoming more and more visible in our country. We talk about development, comfort, GDP, but only a very small percentage of people benefit from that. A huge part of India remains invisible. Their lives don't count in the numbers. The idea that two worlds, slums and skyscrapers, can co-exist, sometimes side by side, probably sparked the story. And I thought, this story has to be told. One striking aspect of the film is how it handles drama. Today, a lot of films just rush through scenes, and there's no emotional breathing room. Were you consciously trying to bring back drama? I can't talk about other films. With my films, I wouldn't say I was trying to bring it back deliberately, but I do feel that we're quickly falling into a stereotype — where everything has to be fast. There's a perception that people don't have time, that they won't sit through 'emotion-heavy' films. But I believe that emotional connection is fundamental to being human. Crying, laughing, sharing… these things still matter. So, yes, I try to write stories that connect at that core emotional level. The plot of Kuberaa, a tussle between a beggar and a multi-billionaire, has strong commercial potential. It's a thrilling premise. But I wanted to go beyond that. Who are these people? How did they become beggars? Society often looks at them with apathy: 'Why don't you work?' But it's not that simple. These aren't people who chose to be lazy. I wanted to show their lives with empathy. What happens when you offer them work? How do they respond? That's where the emotional core of the film lies. Where do you think that empathy comes from for you as a filmmaker? Are you using your art to express a kind of anger? No, this isn't anger. I don't make films with anger. I'm like the character Deepak [Nagarjuna] in the film. We come out of the house and we see pain everywhere and we can't do anything about it. I've done candlelight marches after the Nirbhaya incident, but I've also asked students: Are you doing something every day to stop that from happening again? Are you respecting the women around you? Have you stopped gossiping about women? It has to start there. I'm not Gandhi. I'm not trying to be an activist. I'm just using my craft, filmmaking, to tell stories that stay close to my conscience. Maybe it'll make someone think twice the next time they see a beggar at a signal. That moment when you're in a car and a beggar knocks, give or not give, it's such a real split-second moral dilemma. That's all of us. We're not bad people. But sometimes we're late to something, or unsure if someone's cheating us. Other days, we're moved and we give. That humanity, that confusion, is what I wanted to reflect. The three beggars in the film seemed, for lack of a better word, a bit mentally unsound. Was that intentional? I wouldn't say mentally unsound. They are naïve, yes. But each has a reason for ending up where they are. One misses home. One's protective of her child. One steals to survive. They're not the same. But when you place them in a completely new world, they appear clueless, out of place. That's what I was going for. Why Dhanush for Deva? The answer is simple: Why not Dhanush? Who else could play Deva? The character has a God-like presence, and Dhanush just nailed it. His performance has been praised across regions. I know people say I praise him too much, but I can't help it. He was phenomenal. Balancing two different worlds, casting stars like Dhanush, Rashmika, Nagarjuna, and still staying true to the script… that was tough. And then there was the execution. We shot in real locations: slums, railway stations, Gateway of India. We could've built sets, but we didn't. It was a conscious choice. It took a toll, but it also gave the film its raw, immersive energy. So much of it could have been green-screened or staged. But you chose not to… Yes, that was intentional. It's easy to do it on a set now, but it wouldn't have the same soul. We knew it would be hard. There were low days, but we kept reassuring ourselves: this has to be shot this way. Now that the film is out, is there anything you wish you'd done differently? Not really. As a writer, if 60 to 70 percent of your vision makes it to screen, that's a success. I think we came close. Some people feel it's a bit long, but I felt that length was necessary to tell each story properly. So no, I don't regret it. Do you see any light at the end of this rich-poor disparity we're living through? Yes, I do. I live in hope. Things go to extremes, intolerance, injustice, but then we correct ourselves. Sitaare Zameen Par Box Office Collection Day 11: Aamir Khan's film, Sitaare Zameen Par, made a strong comeback in the second week of release and has maintained its momentum at the box office. Though its earning declined on Monday, it inched towards ₹ 200 crore mark. Directed by RS Prasanna, it is the spiritual sequel of Taare Zameen Par. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Sitaare Zameen Par made an estimated business of ₹ 1.37 crore on Monday, June 30, compared to Sunday when it minted ₹ 14.5 crore. The film saw an overall 12.39% occupancy in Hindi language on Sunday. It also released in Tamil and Telugu. Evening Shows: yet to be accessed Night Shows: yet to be accessed The maximum occupancy for Sitaare Zameen Par was observed in Jaipur (23%), followed by Bengaluru (17.5%), NCR (16.5%), Chennai (15.5%), Lucknow (14.5%) and Chandigarh/Mumbai (13.5%). As per Sacnilk, Sitaare Zameen Par collected an overall ₹ 198 crore worldwide till Sunday, which includes ₹ 122.65 crore (India net) and ₹ 36 crore from overseas. The film earned ₹ 67 lakh in Tamil and ₹ 40 lakh in Telegu. The Aamir Khan movie was reported to release in theatres with over ₹ 6 crore business on day 1 if advance booking is considered. As per the website, the film had sold 1,15,344 tickets for 9,542 shows in all languages nationwide in advance booking. The filmmakers will not be releasing 'Sitaare Zameen Par' on any streaming platform. Hence, the movie is theatre-only release. Aamir Khan Productions reacted after Multiplex Association of India praised this decision. Alongside lead actor Amir Khan, Sitaare Zameen Par star cast includes Genelia Deshmukh, Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishnan Varma, Vedant Sharmaa, Naman Misra, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Ashish Pendse, Samvit Desai, Simran Mangeshkar, Aayush Bhansali, Dolly Ahluwalia, Gurpal Singh, Brijendra Kala and Ankita Sehgal in key roles.

Kuberaa Box Office Collection Day 11: Kuberaa, starring Dhanush, Rashmika Mandanna, and Nagarjuna Akkineni, crossed the ₹ 80 crore mark at the Indian box office on Sunday, Day 10, thanks to the weekend rush. However, Monday blues hit the movie, causing a significant fall in its earnings. Kuberaa hit the big screens on Friday, June 20, in Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, and Tamil. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the movie earned ₹ 48.6 crore during the first weekend and ₹ 11.45 crore from the second weekend. In the Hindi-speaking belt, the movie faces key competition from Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par, which was also released on the same day and has earned ₹ 122.88 crore in 11 days. According to Sacnilk, Kuberaa was catapulted to ₹ 80 crore by its weekend. However, early estimates for Monday show a concerning downward trend for Kuberaa. The movie has earned only ₹ 34,00,000 so far on June 30. With this, the movie's total earnings now stand at ₹ 80.79 crore. However, these are just early estimates from Kuberaa's Monday earnings. The numbers will be revised later to include evening and night show collections. Kuberaa saw an overall 14.10 % occupancy on June 30. For the Tamil version, the occupancy was as follows: The numbers for the evening and night show are yet to be released. Mahbubnagar, Warangal, Vizag, and Kakinada recorded the highest footfall for the day. In Tamil, the movie witnessed an overall occupancy of 13.23%. Kuberaa follows the story of a beggar who undergoes a dramatic transformation. The film touches upon themes of greed, ambition, moral conflicts, and more faced by the cast, ultimately leading to redemption. The screenplay of the film is co-written by Chaithanya Pingali.
