EDMONTON – 'We knew we could get some good things out of him.'
The Edmonton Oilers were always betting on John Klingberg. But, it wasn't a smooth ride from when they signed the defender midseason to the second round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch was singing Klingberg's praises in his post game scrum with the media present after their Game 1 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night.
'Probably the turning point or the pick-me-up is probably after we score that goal,' Knoblauch stated. 'I think John makes a great play (to) break that puck out, leads to a good rush.'

Connor McDavid would eventually pass the puck to Corey Perry, who then scored the Oilers' first goal of the night.
With veteran blueliner Mattias Ekholm missing from the backend, several players must fill the gaps. Klingberg has been one of those guys.
John Klingberg Stepping Up In The Absence Of Mattias Ekholm
'We knew John could handle it,' Knoblauch revealed. 'He's been a number one defenseman for many years in this league…just not this year (or) last year.'

'But, we knew that when we needed him he could give us some quality minutes and some quality play.'
Klingberg has settled into a groove during the playoffs after a shaky (and sporadic) stint in the regular season. He only has two points in six games while averaging 19:34 a night, but his breakout passes have led to scoring opportunities on the other end of the ice. They have also led to goals, even if he isn't rewarded with a point.
Knoblauch revealed that the Oilers knew they would get good things out of Klingberg. It's also fair to say that he's been exceeding expectations.
'We knew we could get some good things out of him, not necessarily at the level he's playing right now. Because he's been helping our team quite a bit since he came into our lineup for Game 2 against LA.'

NHL Awards Show To Air On June 12 Starring Old Spice, 'Cross' Actor Isaiah Mustafa

(Christopher Hanewinckel-Imagn Images) This year's NHL Awards show will be a one-hour special before Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final. The NHL said the show will highlight all award winners this season. Most of them are expected to be announced before the program airs on June 12 at 6 p.m. ET on TNT in the United States and Sportsnet in Canada. Advertisement Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov was already announced as this year's winner of the Selke Trophy and King Clancy Trophy. He received both awards in a team meeting when patients of Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital made a surprise visit. Those surprise video announcements will continue leading up to the show. The program itself is expected to announce the winners of the Hart Trophy and Vezina Trophy. Isaiah Mustafa will host the NHL Awards show. The actor and former professional football player starred in Old Spice commercials such as "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like," which included surprise twists, including him going from a washroom setting to a beach riding a horse in one shot. Mustafa, a Los Angeles Kings fan, currently stars in Prime Video's crime thriller series Cross. Advertisement After Mustafa wraps up the awards show, there will be an hour until the 8 p.m. ET start time for Game 4 of the Cup final between the Edmonton Oilers and Panthers. Oilers center Leon Draisaitl is one of the three finalists for the Hart Trophy, which goes to the NHL's most valuable player. Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and Tampa Bay Lightning right winger Nikita Kucherov are the other finalists. No goalies on the Oilers or Panthers are finalists for the Vezina Trophy, which goes to the goaltender of the year. Hellebuyck is up for that award as well as Kings netminder Darcy Kuemper and the Lightning's Andrei Vasilevskiy. Morocco reveals ambitious £887m plan to host African F1 race

The coastal city of Tangiers in Morocco could host an F1 race (AFP via Getty Images) Morocco looks set to enter the competitive race to host an F1 race in Africa with a spectacular $1.2m (£887m) plan revealed near the coastal city of Tangier. Both South Africa – at either the Kyalami track near Johannesburg or a Cape Town street circuit, and Rwanda have expressed strong interest in hosting a grand prix, perhaps as early as 2027. Advertisement Africa is the only habitable continent that F1 does not host a race in, amidst the congested 24-event calendar. The last grand prix in Africa was the 1993 South African GP. But now, Morocco is aiming to build a mega-project 20km south of Tangier, which will include a Grade 1 circuit fit to host F1 and MotoGP, a theme park, a shopping mall and a marina. The architect behind the plan, ex-McLaren and Lotus team principal Eric Boullier, has his sights set on the project being something close to a 'mini-Abu Dhabi.' 'We went there [Tangier] to do a feasibility study to assess the potential of one day Formula 1 racing in Morocco,' Boullier told RacingNews365. Advertisement "We found the spot they selected met all the criteria, and from that point, we built the project. This is quite a big project. It is a mini-Abu Dhabi, if I may compare, creating a completely independent ecosystem, obviously based on tourism. "It will have a huge impact on the region, based south of Tangier, so additional hotels and the airport are all within 15 kilometres. It's a strategic project for the country, a very serious project, which needs to have the approval at the highest level. It would make sense to hold F1 there, making it the pinnacle of the year, but with an ecosystem created to survive all year." Advertisement The project has already generated $800m of private investment, with the hope that more will be obtained if the spectacular plans are approved at the highest level in Morocco. Boullier was previously managing director of the French Grand Prix, last on the calendar in 2022 at Circuit Paul Ricard. F1 boss Stefano Domenicali has spoken numerous times of his focus on finding Africa a spot on the calendar, while Lewis Hamilton has also insisted that the sport must try and host a race on the continent.

Former Yankees Home Run Leader Makes Big Career Move

Former Yankees Home Run Leader Makes Big Career Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Unsurprisingly, Aaron Judge has led the New York Yankees in home runs each of the last five years. What about 2020, though? Judge missed part of the shortened 2020 season with a calf injury, but it wasn't Giancarlo Stanton or Gleyber Torres who topped the Yankees' homer chart that summer. Advertisement Instead, it was first baseman Luke Voit, whose 22 homers led the entire sport. Five years later, the only way Yankees fans will enjoy Voit's homers is if they plan on streaming Japanese baseball. Voit, who last played in the majors in 2023, signed with Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles this week. Voit spent the last two seasons in Mexico after a failed Milwaukee Brewers stint. The 6-foot-2, 258-pound slugger mashed .324 with 11 homers and a 1.050 OPS for Tigres de Quintana Roo this year. New York Yankees first baseman Luke VoitDale Zanine-Imagn Images Contract details were not available at the time of publication. Voit joins a Rakuten club featuring ex-Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Maikel Franco and journeyman pitcher Spencer Howard among its ex-MLBers. Additionally, ex-Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka is one of the team's assistant coaches. Advertisement Although Voit played for five MLB teams, he's best known for his four-plus seasons with the Yankees. Voit hit .271 with 68 homers and a .883 OPS over 281 games in pinstripes, helping the Yankees to four consecutive playoff berths. If we've seen the last of Voit in the majors, he'll eventually retire with a .253 average, 95 homers, and a 5.5 bWAR. That's not bad for a 22nd-round pick who didn't make his MLB debut until his age-26 season.
